Both the BATH HOUSE and the HOTEL are broken up into parts so they can begin to CROSS PROGRAM. The idea is to combine them to create a unified space rather than isolated units.

  • The site is adjacent to the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn NY. The canal is heavily polluted and floods quite frequently. The program was to design a Bath House and Hotel.

  • THE VORTEX PHOENIX AZ / COMPREHENSIVESPRING 2013

A great TRANSITION is made going from city to sky then back again to the city. This terminal focuses on the emphasis of the MOTION OF FLYING. Conceptually it reminds the passenger of the motion and thus brings back the joy of flying.

    THROUGH THE VORTEX

Wingtip vortices are circular patterns of rotating air left behind a wing as it generates lift. One wingtip vortex trails from the tip of each wing.

When a wing generates aerodynamic lift the air on the top surface has lower pressure relative to the bottom surface. Air flows from below the wing and out around the tip to the top of the wing in a circular fashion. An emergent circulatory flow pattern named vortex is observed, fea-turing a low-pressure core

    AIRPORT TERMINAL

What should an airport look like? The Victorian railroad terminal celebrated the excitement associated with fast long-distance travel. Trains had dining cars and sleepers, and a corre-sponding sense of elegance permeated the station. Excitement and elegance have long since worn off air travel. People just want to get where theyre going as quickly and pain-lessly as possible. The best you hope for is that you get through the security line quickly, your flights on time, theres space for your bag in the overhead bin, and if youre really lucky, the adjacent seat is empty.

The argument is how to bring excitment back into flying. The idea of being in the air flying through and in the midst of clouds. There is a great transition made going from the city to the sky then back again to the city. This terminal design will focus mainly on the emphasis of the motion of flying. The concept is to bring back the joy of flying thus the terminal will inform the passanger of the transition he/she is making as they walk through the building.

When a plane flies through the clouds there is a vortex that it creates due to the wings of the plane. This vortex is taken literal and introduced to the form of the building.

A hole is dug to the ground for a natural cooling effect. A labyrinth is created and water resides at the bottom for further cooling. The building is then placed in the hole acting as a radiator to supply cool air throughout the building.

  • SITE | SITUATION of BANGKOKTHAILAND / THESIS PROJECTSPRING 2014

SITE It is often believed that a site is to be fixed or given, and understood to define the place of architecture. In fact site is an extensive fluctuating factor for the basis of design. Site can be expanded to include the legal limits of a property, atmospheric conditions, and physical conditions such as topography and the existing structure.

This thesis investigated the site of Bangkok in direct contact with its only river. Chao Phraya River passes through the densely populated capital city. Here the edge is made up of industrial ports, slum housing, multistory hotels, and temples. These large industries carelessly pollute the river. Investigating the site only explains half the story. The situation in a city can often affect attitudes towards the site.

SITUATION site refers to the physical footing of the city and is assumed to define the place of architecture. In contrast situation may define the city momentarily. Situation refers to the historical and cultural context of the city. A site may have special significance based on its value, its civic or symbolic importance.

Bangkok historically developed along and followed the waters edge. Now modernization and rapid urbanization erase the former connection with water and building. Attitudes towards the river have changed as the city now grows quickly along the road and bridge system, the water network, still present, becomes unused or destroyed.

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE + PUBLICThe space of water in the city generated a physical psychological and social split between site and situation of the city.

This thesis focuses on incorporating Bangkok built environment (site) and ideals (situation) with an informal -PEOPLE, INFRASTRUCTURE, and WATER FLOW- to develop a water filtration and wellness center that overlaps and blends with the edge. Understanding the site and situation will help to develop an architectural project that will bring back the physical and social connection with the edge, so that water and building can once again coexist.

The water quality gets worse as it goes down-stream as more density of factories, limiting the use of the river to only dump-ing ground and transpor-tation.

The river passes through the densely populated capital city, mixed with low and high rise urban devel-opment.

Chao Phraya is an impor-tant gateway to Thailand, being the only transporta-tion route for vessel ship-ment into Bangkok.

Rapid growth of water hyacinth all along the Choa Phraya river water system has become a pollution problem both reducing oxygen and blocking of water thor-oughfare.

Temples play a big role in Thain culture. Often times they are blocked by indus-trial buildings that hide the waters edge.

SITUATIONCULTURE & HISTORYHistorically Bangkok was a water-based city, the urban life and space was created within this context. The Chao Phraya is well known for its role as the initial point of development. Bangkok started as a small fishing village the evolved into an important trading settlement. With a relatively extensive waterways network in this water transportation era, Bangkok gained a reputation as Venice of the East. The Chao Phraya was Thailands highway to the world, defined by the crisscrossing of canals rather than roads. Even today it is evident that despite rapid urbanization the city and water have grown together. The canal network specifically works with the geography of the low-lying Chao Phraya.
