using vgi in design for online usability
DESCRIPTION
Amateur Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) has been used together with Professional Geographic Information (PGI) since its inception during the mid 00’s alongside neogeography. While the geographic accuracy and quality of VGI has been demonstrated to be more than good enough, no previous research has been published on the influence VGI has on the user perceptions of the mashup. This paper presents a quantitative investigation into how including VGI in mashups, and telling users their mashup contains VGI influences user perceptions of quality and authority- which ultimately decide if the user wishes to utilise the mashup or not.TRANSCRIPT

Using VGI In Design For Online UsabilityDesign Outcomes
• Don’t be scared: • No Negative Perceptions
• Data Centric• Does it do what need it to do?

Using VGI In Design For Online UsabilityDesign Outcomes
• VGI can enhance judgements of website quality
• This stems from the perception of the information as being more current
• No negative connotations related to the use of VGI
• BUT the information has to be good
• VGI and PGI should be critically analysed as equals, with only relevant information being used.
• VGI has the potential to be used effectively in enhancing user experiences of online GI
