What is that? The bachelor’s degree is an interdisciplinary major that prepares students for a professional career by engaging them in the analysis and exploration of the problems and issues that communities face in the 21st century. Students gain exposure to society’s critical political, social, and economic issues in areas such as planning, health care, and the environment. Over the summer, Ogoms remained on campus to take part in the degree’s undergraduate studio (PPD431), which teaches the application of methods in the exploration of a specific project, policy, or organization. As a part of the coursework, Ogoms and her research partner embarked on a weeklong stay in Detroit where they toured real estate developments, sat in on meetings, and developed a proposal for the improvement of Detroit’s urban communities. Within her proposal, Ogoms suggested implementing sustainable energy systems such as wind turbines and solar panels, and the further development of Detroit’s plentiful urban farms. Proposal accepted? She got an A in the course. TOP PERFORMERS Sophomore outside hitter SARAH LIVINGSTON holds one of the team’s highest gradepoint averages at 3.44. Livingston is majoring in communication at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Despite having English as a second language, junior setter ALICE PIZZASEGOLA is thriving in a particularly difficult major: international relations. The native Italian holds a 3.41 gradepoint average. USC Women of Troy at Oklahoma Invitational McCasland Field House | Norman, Okla. COMMUNITY CORNER The Women of Troy participated as ambassadors of USC during the summer’s “Trojan Games” which were held in conjunction with Los Angeles’ host of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. Trojans interacted with special needs athletes to teach them about sports. Junior libero TAYLOR WHITTINGHAM has a particularly special place in her heart for special needs athletes. Her younger brother has autism, and she has maintained a consistent volunteer regiment with organizations that promote awareness and generate financial support for autism research. This summer, Whittingham spent time volunteering at her brother’s school as an organizational aid and would spend time with students throughout the day. LOS ANGELES – The third-ranked USC women’s volleyball team (10-0) carries a 29-set winning streak into its final tune up before the start of Pac-12 play. The Women of Troy will head to Norman, Okla., to face host Oklahoma (5-4) on Thursday, Sept. 17 (8 p.m. CT), and Maryland (10-1) on Friday, Sept. 18 (4:30 p.m. CT), in the Oklahoma Invitational at the McCasland Field House.

The Trojans’ 29-set winning streak is the program’s longest since the team had a 30-set streak in 2002 (Nov. 8-Dec. 13) en route to claiming the first of two back-to-back NCAA championships. USC’s school record set streak is 38 set in 2000 (Sept. 1-Oct. 6). The Women of Troy are 10-0 to start a season for the seventh time under head coach Mick Haley. In fact, the Trojans have gone unbeaten in pre-league tournaments six times in Haley’s previous 14 seasons. USC needs two more wins to match that milestone for a seventh time.

Senior outside hitter Samantha Bricio earned her third consecutive Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honor this week and became just the second player in league history to win three straight weekly honors in the same season (Logan Tom, 2001) and the first to do so in nearly 15 years. She leads the conference in kills (5.13 kps) and ranks second in the nation. She leads the country in service aces (0.81 saps) and points (6.32 pps).

Bricio isn’t alone in her endeavors however. Fellow senior Alicia Ogoms has been a solid middle blocker for the Trojans and leads the Pac-12 with 1.68 bps and is fifth in hitting percentage (.419). Junior libero Taylor Whittingham is the league’s leader for digs (4.90 dps). The Trojans also boast scoring threats in freshman Alyse Ford (2.45 kps) and sophomore opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie (2.50 kps).

2015 uSc QuIck factS LAST TIME OUT: The Women of Troy extended their 17-set winning streak to 29 as they captured the USC Classic title with four 3-0 sweeps on wins over Utah State, Pepperdine, Idaho State, and New Mexico. Seniors Alicia Ogoms, Samantha Bricio, and freshman Alyse Ford were each chosen to the all-tournament team. Bricio earned tournament MVP honors for the eighth time in her career and appeared on a pre-conference all-tournament team for the 13th time in four years. On the weekend, Bricio rose from ninth to sixth place on USC’s all-time career kills list and displaced Trojan legends April Ross (7th), Nancy Hillman (8th), and Katie Haller (9th). She also served eight aces against the Aggies to match the program’s single-match record; a mark she has once set before. The same day, she also served five aces against the Waves: the 15th time in her career that she has had five or more aces in one match. Bricio maintained a .404 hitting percentage in the four matches and collected a total of 14 aces (1.17 saps). Ogoms had 16 kills and hit .316 as she led the team with 18 blocks including a career-high matching eight against Idaho State. Junior libero Taylor Whittingham led the team with 58 digs (4.83 dps).

LET ME TAKE A #SELFIE: Get social with the Women of Troy this season. Fans can follow and interact with the USC women’s volleyball team on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Periscope by searching for @USCWomensVolley.

HI, MOM! I’M ON TV: The Trojans will appear on live television broadcasts 20 times in 2015. Two matches each from USC’s home tournaments (Women of Troy Baden Invitational and USC Classic) were carried on the Pac-12 Networks in addition to 14 live broadcasts of league matches. The Trojans were shown on ESPN3 in the debut of The Valley—a substation of ESPN’s streaming channels—when it played Northern Iowa in the UNI Tournament (Sept. 5). USC’s match at Oklahoma (Sept. 17) will be broadcast live on Fox College Sports (FCS) Central. Any home USC match that is not on television is streamed live on the USC Pac-12 Networks Portal.

ONCE. TWICE. THREE TIMES A PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior OH Samantha Bricio was chosen for the Pac-12’s Offensive Player of the Week honor for the third consecutive week on Sept. 14. She had previously received the award once each year in 2012, 2013, and 2014. This season already, she has been chosen three consecutive weeks, which marks the first time since 2001 that any Pac-12 player has received the weekly award three straight times in the same season. In fact, Bricio and Logan Tom (Stanford) are the only two players ever to receive Player of the Week recognition three straight times in the same season. Bricio was also selected as the league’s Freshman of the Week five times in 2012. USC has had players chosen for weekly honors (not including freshman awards) 62 times since 1986. Since the league split its weekly awards into offensive, defensive, and freshman categories in 2011, Trojans have won Player of the Week honors 16 times.

PAC-12 PRESEASON COACHES POLL: The Women of Troy were picked to finish fifth in the Pac-12 by the league’s coaches. In a unanimous decision, Stanford was chosen to repeat as the conference champion. The only other first-place vote (cast by Stanford head coach John Dunning) went to Washington, which finished third in the polling. Arizona State was chosen to finish in second place, with Oregon at fourth. Behind USC, Colorado was picked to finish sixth and was followed by Arizona, UCLA, Oregon State, and Utah. California and Washington State were each tabbed 11th and 12th. The Women of Troy have the distinction of winning the first-ever Pac-12 title in 2011 and are the holders of seven league crowns (1976, ‘77, ‘80, 2000, ‘02, ‘03, ‘11), the last three with head coach Mick Haley. The coaches’ pick to win the conference title has gone on to win at least a share of the Pac-12 crown 18 times of the 29 years since the poll’s inception in 1986.

AVCA POLL POSITION: The Trojans opened 2015 ranked No. 22 in the AVCA’s Preseason Coaches Top 25 Poll. It was the 457th time that USC appeared in the poll. USC has been ranked in the poll 460 times and has also held a spot among the poll’s top 10 teams 299 times, which ranks seventh all-time. The Trojans have also held the No. 1 ranking 41 times previously, which is sixth all-time. Last year, on Nov. 24, the Women of Troy dropped out of the AVCA’s coaches poll for the first time since the final poll of 1990, which snapped a 23-year run.

ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS: Three Benjamins to be exact. Head coach Mick Haley earned his 300th win at USC in 2012. His 311th victory made him the winningest coach in program history. He is 369-92 in 15 seasons with USC for a .800 winning percentage. Haley surpassed legendary coach Chuck Erbe who logged a 310-

The roots of the Pac-12 Conference date back nearly 100 years to December 2, 1915, when the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) was founded at a meeting at the Imperial Hotel in Portland, Ore. The original membership consisted of four schools - the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, and Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University). All still are charter members of the Conference.

Pacific Coast Conference play began in 1916 and, one year later, Washington State College (now Washington State University) was accepted into the league, with Stanford University following in 1918.

In 1922, the PCC expanded to eight teams with the admission of USC and the University of Idaho. In 1924, the University of Montana joined the league roster and in 1928, the PCC grew to 10 members with the addition of UCLA.

The Pacific Coast Conference competed as a 10-member league until 1950, with the exception of 1943-45 when World War II curtailed intercollegiate athletic competition to a minimum. During that time, the league’s first commissioner was named. Edwin N. Atherton was Commissioner in 1940 and was succeeded by Victor O. Schmidt in 1944. In 1950, Montana resigned from the Conference and the PCC continued as a nine-team Conference through 1958.

In 1959, the PCC was dissolved and the Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU) was formed with Thomas J. Hamilton was appointed Commissioner of the new league. The original AAWU membership included California, Stanford, USC, UCLA and Washington. Washington State joined the membership in 1962, while Oregon and Oregon State joined in 1964. Under Hamilton’s watch, the name Pacific-8 Conference was adopted in 1968. In 1971, Wiles Hallock took over as Commissioner of the Pac-8.

10 years later, on July 1, 1978, the Arizona and Arizona State were admitted to the league and the Pacific-10 Conference became a reality. In 1986-87, the league took on a new look, expanding to include 10 women’s sports. Since then, the Conference has been considered the premiere league in women’s athletics, securing the most NCAA titles in women’s sports of any conference nearly every year.

Thomas C. Hansen was named the Commissioner of the Pac-10 in 1983, a role he would hold for 26 years until 2009, and was succeeded by current Commissioner Larry Scott, who took on the new role in July 2009.

During the 2010-11 academic year, the University of Colorado accepted its invitation to join the Pac-12 on June 11, 2010, and on June 17, 2010, the University of Utah agreed to join the Conference. The Buffaloes and Utes officially became the 11th and 12th members of the Conference on July 1, 2011, the first additions to the league since 1978.

During the 2010-11 academic year, Scott spurred monumental changes that transformed the Conference into a modern 12-team league. In addition to expanding to 12 teams, member institutions agreed to equal revenue sharing for the first time in the Conference’s history, created two divisions - the North and the South, for football only and established a Football Championship Game for the first time ever. He also secured a landmark media rights deal that dramatically increased national exposure and revenue for each school, establishing the Pac-12 Networks and Pac-12 Digital Network that guaranteed enhanced exposure across all sports.

Currently, the Pac-12 sponsors 11 men’s sports and 12 women’s sports, with beach volleyball added in 2015-16. Additionally, the Conference is a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) in four other men’s sports and three women’s sports.

The Pac-12 Conference offices are located in the heart of San Francisco in the SOMA district.

2015 uSc SuPeRlatIVeS121-3 record in 12 seasons as USC’s head coach from 1976-77 and 1979-88. Haley’s 300th win with Troy gave him at least 300 wins at three different schools: Kellogg Community College, Texas, and USC.

LIKE A BROKEN RECORD: Senior OH Samantha Bricio is a force to be reckoned with from the end line. She is the all-time career leader in service aces both at USC and in the Pac-12. Bricio is also the only player in league history ever to record 200 aces in a career. She is one of six Trojans ever to have served the school’s single-match record of eight aces in a match. Bricio has posted six aces or more eight times in her career. She has also hit five aces in a match 15 times and has had three aces in the same match 31 times in her career. In 2013, she led the NCAA in service aces with a remarkable 0.70 saps average. She had 43 as a freshman, finished with 85 as a sophomore, and had 84 as a junior. The 85 aces in 2013 set a new school record and put her in third place in Pac-12 single-season history.

ON THE DOUBLES: Through six matches, senior OH Samantha Bricio has already notched 3 double-doubles this season. She has had 44 in her career. Freshman setter Baylee Johnson recorded her first double-double in her first match as a Trojan with 30 assists and 11 digs against North Carolina and now has 3 to match Bricio. Junior setter Alice Pizzasegola has had six-career double-doubles and junior MB Elise Ruddins has one.

HOME, SWEET HOME: The Trojans have enjoyed the comforts of home to the tune of a 119-20 (.856) all-time record at the Galen Center. When it comes to the volleyball court, the Women of Troy are less than hospitable to their visitors. The Trojans went 12-1 in home matches in 2011 and completed the 2012 home schedule with a 17-1 mark. In 2007, USC was 19-0 at home on the way to an appearance in the NCAA national semifinal match.

#1 THE AIR UP THERE: The air is a little thinner where Alyse Ford likes to hang out during matches. The leaper has been measured with a standing vertical jump of 31 inches and can touch 10’6” on an approach.

#2 BROTHERLY INFLUENCE: One of Samantha Bricio’s biggest life influences has been her older brother Irving Bricio. The elder Bricio was a professional men’s volleyball player in Switzerland.

#2 ARE YOU CRAZY?: Because if you are, Samantha Bricio would love to talk to you. Of all the dream jobs one could have, Bricio aspires to work in a mental hospital with dangerous criminals. Currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in psychology, Bricio is considering completing a master’s degree in criminal psychology when she is done with her playing career.

#3 SIBLING RIVALRY: Outside hitter Niki Withers may be a transfer from Cal State Fullerton, but her choice to play at USC puts her on the other side of a crosstown rivalry with her brother Marcedes Lewis. Lewis is in his 10th year as a Pro Bowl tight end for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. He won the Mackey Award as the best collegiate tight end while attending UCLA (2002-05), but never beat the Trojans while he wore the Bruin jersey.

#4 NUTTY VICE: Defensive specialist Victoria Garrick’s guilty pleasure is Nutella, a delicious hazelnut spread made of skim milk with a hint of cocoa.

#5 NET VIOLATION: Middle blocker Jordan Dunn is all about preventing net violations. She used to be a goalie for her soccer team at Corona HS as a freshman and sophomore. At 6-4, her reach helped her stop many oppositional net violations during her futbol career.

#5 GREAT DANE: Jordan Dunn is the descendant of a former Queen of Denmark. The great-great-great-great grandmother of Dunn served as the Danish queen consort in the early to mid-1800s.

#6 LA COSTA CONNECTION: Opposite Brittany Abercrombie is the third player to play for USC from La Costa Canyon HS in Carlsbad, Calif. She follows in the footsteps of three-time All-American libero Natalie Hagglund, and All-American opposite hitter Katie Fuller who each produced successful careers with the Women of Troy.

#8 OH, CANADA: Senior MB Alicia Ogoms is the first-ever scholarship volleyball player at USC to hail from Canada. The 6-4 Ogoms is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she attended St. Mary’s.

Pac-12 and ncaa RankInGS#8 ON THE RIGHT TRACK: As a child, middle blocker Alicia Ogoms received a picture book form her mother depicting the accomplishments of American track athlete Wilma Rudolph. It became her favorite book because Rudolph’s story was so inspiring. Known as The Fastest Woman in the World in the 1960’s, Rudolph won three gold medals in the Rome Olympics. Ogoms admires the relentless spirit and perseverance that Rudolph represents.

#10 SPEAKING OUT FOR AUTISM: Libero Taylor Whittingham has been actively involved in autism awareness programs since her younger brother was diagnosed with the neural-developmental disorder. She has organized fundraising efforts among her high school and club teams and has inspired others to join the effort to spread awareness and generate funds for autism research.

#11 BLOOD LINES: Middle blocker Elise Ruddins has volleyball in her blood. The accomplished hitter is the daughter of Jerome Ruddins, a former men’s volleyball player at Long Beach State, and is the niece of one of the most heralded setters in Troy’s history: Kim Ruddins (1981-85). Elise’s aunt won the program’s first NCAA title in 1980 and was a two-time first-team All-American (1984-85). She was also won the silver medal with the US women’s national team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

#12 FISH OUT OF WATER: Setter Alice Pizzasegola wasn’t always destined for the volleyball court. As a youth, she spent much of her time as a competitive swimmer and later swam with the Nuotatori Piacentini Club in Piacenza, Italy.

#15 EARLY BLOOMER: Setter Baylee Johnson couldn’t wait to begin her collegiate career, so she enrolled at USC in the spring o 2015 as an early-admit. She left Dayton, Ohio, and departed high school a semester early to practice and play with the Trojans in preparation for her freshman season.

#15 BLUE-BELT BAYLEE: Don’t mess with Baylee Johnson. One of her hobbies is jiu jitsu. The feisty setter achieved blue belt status in the Brazilian martial art as a youth and still has the skills to prove it.

#16 BEACH BUNNY: Outside hitter Eve Ettinger began her collegiate career with the Trojans in 2011 and though she redshirted due to injury, was part of the squad that claimed the first-ever Pac-12 title. She spent the next four years on the sand as a member of the Trojans’ inaugural sand volleyball team. As a senior in 2015, she helped lead the Women of Troy to the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship; the school’s 123rd overall team crown. She then returned to the indoor game in the fall, but suffered a season-ending injury at the end of fall camp.

#23 ROUNDBALL ROCK: Outside hitter Sarah Livingston isn’t new to volleyball, but it is a drastic change from her basketball-playing days at Illinois just a year ago. The transfer was a guard on the Illini squad in 2013-14 and was dribbling not too long ago. She is the younger sister of 10-year NBA veteran guard and recently crowned World Champion Shaun Livingston who was the fourth overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers. He is currently a guard with the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors.
