UPRT EASA and FAA have introduced new requirements for upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT). All European airlines and aeroplane charter operators (AOC holders), as well as ATO’s will need to comply with these new requirements.

One of the new requirements is that “personnel providing FSTD UPRT are competent and current to deliver the training and understand the capabilities and limitations of the device used” [AMC1 ORO.FC.220 & 230 (c)]. The objective of this one-day classroom training session is to:

• Explain the new requirements for upset prevention and recovery training;

• Give you the tools you need to update your training programmes.

• Prepare your instructors to deliver training in accordance with the new requirements.

Purpose of the seminar

The purpose of this one-day seminar is to explain the new regulations concerning the training

of UPRT in airlines and ATOs. This one-day seminar does NOT in any way, qualify you to be a

UPRT instructor, but it allows you to have an in-depth knowledge of the regulations and assist

you with the knowledge required in preparing your future UPRT training program. It will also

provide you knowledge on the requirements of training Instructors and Pilots within your

organisation. At the end of the seminar, you will be issued with a “Certificate of Attendance”.

Who should attend?

• The session is aimed at Regulators, Training Managers and simulator instructors (TRIs or SFIs) working in commercial air transport who will be required to conduct UPRT during Operator’s Conversion Courses and Recurrent Training. The course will also be useful for ground instructors who will deliver theoretical elements of UPRT.

• The session is also aimed at ATO’s who will provide initial UPRT training for type ratings.

Why should I attend?

AOC holders and ATOs are required to provide training for instructors before commencing UPRT. In order for instructors to deliver effective UPRT training they will not only need to understand the requirements but also to understand and accept the need for this training.

The course will not only explain what instructors need to do but will also put the requirements into context and show why effective UPRT is key to reducing the accident rate.

The seminar will also give you the tools you need to review and update your training programs.

Days Event

The full day course will cover all of the theoretical elements stipulated in GM5 ORO.FC.220 & 230 together with the necessary background information to make the material relevant and interesting. The syllabus is shown in the following table:

Practical Training of Instructors

In order to fulfill the requirements of AMC 1/2 ORO.FC.220 & 230 we recommend that instructors demonstrate their ability to deliver UPRT training in a simulator following completion of the ground training. We would be happy to work with your team to develop practical training for your instructors.

GreenDot Aviation Ltd. is providing UPRT training (specializing in FBW aeroplanes) for all pilots and instructors and can assist you with the set up and preparation of your own UPRT training program at AATC.

Presenters

The training will be presented by Captain Mladen Zunic and Captain Veronica Zunic. Both are highly experienced Airline Captains and EASA Instructors/Examiners, and AATC (EASA) FSTD Flight Inspectors.

They have undertaken intensive On-Aircraft FAA UPRT training as well as EASA Simulator “Train the Trainer” programme, and have spent months developing their own ATO UPRT training program for ground theory and simulator training, to comply with all EASA and FAA regulations.

The seminar will also be fully supported throughout by AATC FSTD SMEs.

The GreenDot Aviation Ltd. ™ UPRT training program is the best on the market. It is intensive training focusing on prevention and then recovery strategies that are in compliance with OEM Recommendations and EASA/FAA/ICAO Regulatory Requirements.

Simulators

All UPRT training courses performed by qualified instructors utilise AATC’s EASA and CAAT Level D qualified simulators, which have been specifically adapted and qualified to cater for UPRT training.

AATC UPRT Qualified Airbus FSTDs FSTD ID A320#1 EU-FR190 A320#2 EU-A0086 A320#3 EU-A0125 A330 EU-A0036

In accordance with ICAO Doc 10011, FSTDs: Unless the UPRT FSTD’s simulation model satisfactorily represents the aeroplane’s behaviour and performance during an aerodynamic stall, the training demonstrating conditions beyond the critical angle of attack can create harmful misperceptions about such an event and the recovery experience.

Fidelity Requirements for UPRT and Stall Training

Most FSTDs can be used satisfactorily for AOA related training and for a significant portion of the upset training not involving full stalls. As long as the simulated aeroplane remains within its Validated Training Envelope (VTE – of the aeroplane flight envelope data provided by the OEM and used for the FSTD qualification) for angle of attack and sideslip, upsets that subsequently have large (angle of attack or sideslip) attitudes can be represented faithfully.

However, most current FSTD datapacks are currently deficient in adequately representing the aeroplane in the post stall regime. The development and utilisation of a “type representative post-stall aerodynamic model” to support demonstration of a stall past the critical angel of attack (full aerodynamic stall or post-stall regime) is under development by Airbus, if such demonstration is to be conducted in the future. AATC UPRT Airbus qualified FSTDs all comply with present regulations and more than adequately suffice for UPRT training to be correctly conducted. AATC FSTDs therefore are more than suitably qualified for this level of UPRT training. However, to ensure that there is no negative transfer of training and the simulator is not used for training outside of the VTE, AATC and GDA have taken the following measures to ensure the highest level of training and compliancy, as well as training to be valid and effective:

1. IOS UPRT page (specialized instructor tools) installed in all Airbus FSTDs. Training programme proposed ensures that all training is conducted up to the critical angle of attack and not beyond.

2. Instructors are intensively trained in UPRT and FSTD alpha and beta limitations. They also ensure that the VTE is never exceeded and that full stall recovery is not trained or used in the programme.

Applicability

Whilst this seminar is based round Airbus FBW aircraft, the regulations, principles and objectives are identical for any aircraft type and the seminar is of equal benefit to non Airbus personnel.

Also, all AATC ATR FFSs are UPRT capable and qualified. In addition, they are EASA qualified for Deep Tail stall and Bounced Landing training.

UPRT Courses

We will be pleased to provide full details on all UPRT courses conducted at AATC by GDA trainers throughout the event.
