O RNL Federal Credit Union is excited to announce that a new branch will be

opening in 2014 in Northshore Town Center, a mixed-use community development property. The Northshore Town Center location will be the site of the Credit Union’s 33rd branch and will provide a full suite of services and greater convenience to members in this area.

“We are very pleased to be making this

expansion announcement as it will allow us the opportunity to better serve and bring increased value to our members,” said Chris Johnson, President and CEO. “We have a very dedicated staff and Board of Directors who have worked hard to make this expansion a reality, and since we are member-owned, our focus is on delivering solutions to our members, rather than making money for stockholders.”

Northshore Town Center is a 134-acre site located at Pellissippi Parkway and Northshore Drive. The development’s master plan anticipates retailers, restaurants, entertainment, office space, plus single-family homes, multi-family homes, apartments, condos and townhomes, all complemented by a five-acre lake. In addition, Northshore Elementary will open this fall and accommodate nearly 1,000 students.

New Branch to Open at Northshore Town Center

A s a member, you know that as a

cooperative, ORNL Federal Credit Union is owned and

directed by you and governed by a member-elected volunteer Board of Directors. As a volunteer on your Board of Directors and Chair of the Credit Union’s Governmental Affairs Committee, I am writing to you regarding some concerning changes being proposed that would directly impact our Credit Union.

Unlike banks that maximize profits for a small group of investors, we exist to serve you, our members, including working families, small businesses, and the local community. Because we return benefits to our members, we are able to offer competitive products and services, and a higher level of personal service and experience. That’s why your ORNL Federal Credit Union is not-for-profit and tax exempt.

You may be aware that politicians in Washington are considering an overhaul of the federal tax code, which includes talks of taxing credit unions like ORNL Federal Credit Union, despite the fact that credit unions are not-for-profit. At this time, credit unions across the nation are asking their members to take action by sending a strong message to Congress: “Don’t Tax My Credit Union.”

A tax on credit unions would hinder their ability

to function and provide services to members just like you. Credit unions are able to offer lower fees on services, lower rates on loans and higher rates on deposits because of their tax exemption status. In fact, the Credit Union National Association states that for every $1 of their tax exemption, credit unions return $10 to consumers in better rates and lower fees. If Congress taxes credit unions, these benefits go away, and possibly so will many credit unions. Simply stated, a tax on credit unions is a tax on its members.

“Don’t Tax My Credit Union” is a national campaign dedicated to ensuring Congress doesn’t raise taxes on 96 million credit union members nationwide and preserves financial choice for American consumers. It’s easy to take action! Simply visit www.donttaxmycreditunion.org, where you will find ways you can get involved and show your support for preserving the credit union tax exemption.

Now is the time to tell Congress that credit unions like ORNL Federal Credit Union exist to promote the economic well-being of their members by investing in people who have been traditionally underserved by banks. Join us in taking action today and support your cooperative, ORNL Federal Credit Union!

Tell Congress: Don’t Tax My Credit Union!

T hanks to members, ORNL Federal Credit Union has been recognized by the National

Association of Federal Credit Unions as one of the top participating credit unions in the NAFCU/PAC Pals Program! Sales of the NAFCU/PAC Pals concluded at the end of May, with over $7,500 raised to support the NAFCU/PAC. Funds generated through the NAFCU/PAC will go to support candidates and congressional members who:

• Understand the good works credit unions do in their communities

• Are active with their local credit unions

As credit unions continue to face ongoing regulatory challenges and political pressures, ORNL Federal Credit Union is committed to taking an active role to keep the credit union movement healthy and strong at the government level. Thank you to all members for making the credit union voice heard!

E ach year, ORNL Federal Credit Union, through the University of Tennessee general scholarship

fund, awards a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving student/member with excellence in education and social merit. The B.A. Candler Scholarship was established in 1993 to honor Bob A. Candler, who retired as the Credit Union’s president after 31 years of service.

This year, the scholarship endowment was able to award two scholarships to the University of Tennessee: Congratulations to Brooke Cunningham, a 2007 graduate of Oak Ridge

High School, and Beatríz Satizábal, a 2013 graduate of Halls High School. Brooke is a rising third-year Interior Design student in the College of Architecture and Design. Beatríz plans to major in Chemistry with a Pre-Med concentration and minor in Medieval and Renaissance Studies.

The students were selected by the UT General Scholarship Committee and will be attending the University of Tennessee in the fall, where they may use their scholarship award towards books, tuition, or any other school-related expense. The next application deadline is March 1, 2014.

Team ORNL FCU: On the Move!

Y our Credit Union is more than just financially fit – it’s physically fit! Recently, ORNL Federal

Credit Union employees and family members were “On the Move” in two local events: The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon, which was held on April 7th in downtown Knoxville, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes, held on May 11th at World’s Fair Park.

There were 89 ORNL Federal Credit Union employees who participated in the Knoxville Marathon, while 51 employees and family members participated in the JDRF Walk! The very same team spirit that delivers the solutions you need with the service you trust was alive and thriving as Team ORNL FCU walkers and runners participated in each event.

With over 7,000 participants, the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon provided active opportunities for all ages to get involved during the first weekend in April. An East Tennessee premier event, the Knoxville Marathon promotes a lifetime

of well-being through walking and running. The inaugural Knoxville Marathon was held in 2005 and is produced annually by the Knoxville Track Club, a 501(c)3, non-profit organization that supports our community through various youth track programs and fundraising for local charities. ORNL Federal Credit Union was awarded second place in the medium category of the Fittest Company Challenge. Sponsored by Humana, the Fittest Company Challenge is an initiative that encourages area companies to engage employees in a more active lifestyle.

The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes is a fun-filled charity walk that raises funds for the millions of people around the world affected by type 1 diabetes. Team ORNL FCU raised over $3,400 for the Walk, which will aid in JDRF’s ability to award research funding and act as a powerful advocate in the type 1 diabetes community. More than 600,000 people participate in the Walk each year, which has raised more than $1 billion for

type 1 diabetes research since 1992!“ORNL Federal Credit Union values the

members we’ve served for over 60 years and is committed to building upon our legacy of delivering service excellence from the inside out,” shared Chris Johnson, ORNL Federal Credit Union President & CEO. “One way we do this is by supporting and encouraging employee participation in community events such as the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon and the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes.”
