WET/EXTREME WEATHER

In the event of wet or extreme weather, any cancellations of training or

matches will be communicated through the Marist College Ashgrove College

APP. Please check this regularly if poor weather looks imminent.

SATURDAY SPORT Unless there is extreme weather,

no decisions will be made until the morning of competition. The APP will be updated as regularly as possible.

TRAINING We will aim to let students know

by 2nd break if possible. This is not always realistic, so we encourage all students to have a contingency plan if poor weather arrives late in the day.

From the Head of Sport Continued... Thank you also to the many staff and non-staff involved in our swimming program. These staff are listed below in the AIC Swimming wrap up.

As usual, I would like to acknowledge the work of three staff members who have undeniably been the backbone of our swimming program for the past four years. As Head Coach at Marist Ashgrove, James Boyce continues to manage not only our school program but MCA club commitments, a pool full of swimmers every afternoon and morning, along with six other sports vying for attention at our College. James was contesting his fourth AIC championships and it is obvious that the development over the past few years is paying dividends. Every student in our team has been part of our MCA program since they decided to attend the College and under the guidance of our coaches, they have seen their performances improve dramatically. James continued to build on his experiences of the past few years and was again outstanding in his preparation of the team and his continual development of team culture.

James was supported in his role again by Damian Bromley as our assistant swimming coach and together they have formed a strong coaching partnership with the assistance of both school and club coaches that continues across the entire year. Damian’s development of our junior and intermediate swimmers, in particular, has been fantastic and the results of our 12, 13 and 14 years age groups, in particular, is a reflection of this. The work of our two coaches across the entire program is a true team effort and we thank them both.

Finally, we also thank Cathy Geraghty for her exceptional management of the team as swimming coordinator. Cathy continues to spend an amazing amount of her time organising the swimming program to ensure all swimmers and parents were well-informed and prepared for their season. The details in the “What’s on at the Pool” weekly email allows everyone to stay organised and assists in managing one of our largest MCA sporting teams.

Tomorrow night, the season will conclude with the final swimming presentation evening which is always a fantastic way to celebrate another successful season of swimming at our College.

While some swimmers will maintain their swimming training throughout the year, our official College swimming season began toward the end of 2019 with some Term 3 winter training and continued to develop in Term 4 where we welcomed our 2020 Year 5 students to train with the squad.

Our season consists of Friday night club meets, January team camps, weekend training, AIC competitions and numerous team gatherings that catered for all squad members and clearly recognised the involvement of all students in our program. We thank all swimming staff for their ability to manage the largest AIC swimming program and achieve such great success on many levels.

SOUTH AFRICAN CRICKET TOUR

Every two years the College takes a group of Year 9 & 10 cricketers away on an overseas cricketing tour. We have travelled previously to the UK and Sri Lanka with the next tour planned to visit South Africa in January 2021. This tour is available for current Year 8 & 9 (2020) cricketers to attend and while it is generally aimed at our A/B players, we encourage all interested students with good cricket ability to express their interest.

If there are students wishing to attend in the cricket program, particularly from Year 9, then they are encouraged to contact Mr David Miles [email protected] and Mr Ben Maddox [email protected] via email or to visit the sports office. A flyer is attached later in this newsletter.

AIC Swimming Results The AIC Swimming Championships were swum on Monday with the Marist team turning in outstanding performances to come second in both the Primary Aggregate and the Secondary Aggregate. Congratulations to St Peter’s Lutheran College (Secondary Champions) and Villanova College (Primary Champions). The championships were swum in a spirit of sportsmanship, friendly banter and fierce war cries. Our Year 11 and 12 spectators were a force to be reckoned with and the sheer power of the Hive lifted our swimmers over the line again and again.

The final results were:

the Marist College Ashgrove record.

Another four Marist College Ashgrove records were broken:

- Jack Goyen – 16 Years 50m Freestyle (23.85) - Matthew Magnussen, Ryley Leeper, Jack L’Enfant, Jack Goyen – 16 Years 4 x 50m Medley Relay (1:50.91) - James Leigh, Lachlan Vink, Jonah Miles, Joseph Cervetto – 13 Years 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay (1:55.93) - Orlando Leavy, Matthew Magnussen, Ryley Leeper, Jack Goyen – 16 Years 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay (1:38.60)

We could not have asked any more of our boys on Monday. While the statistics on personal bests have not yet been calculated, we had swimmer after swimmer slicing chunks off their PBs. The team was led admirably by our captains Hunter Dreghorn and Joshua Small and vice-captains Will Cruickshank and Riley Grace. These young men led by example, giving their all in the water and encouraging all members of the team to do the same while remaining at the finish line, when they could, to congratulate each swimmer after his race.

Many thanks are due to the Marist coaching staff for their tireless efforts with the swimming program. From early morning training, to afternoon training, Friday night meets, swimming camps, weekend training and lunches, these people have given very generously of their time, their expertise and their spirit over two terms and for some, the Christmas Holidays: James Boyce (Head Coach), Damian Bromley (Assistant Coach), Roxanne Rosenberg, Catie Kidd, David Meehan, Julia Wilken, Anntoinette Restell, Peta Earley, Lucy Hislop, Catherine Barnett and Matt McCahon. As always, the support and help of our Head of Sport, David Miles and Head of Primary Sport, John Lambourne, has been very much valued and appreciated.

Marist College Ashgrove AIC Swimming continues to go from strength to strength with a spirit and culture the envy of many. Congratulations to our swimmers – you have trained and raced with integrity, grit and honour. We are so very proud of you all.

Queensland Schools Sport 10 – 12 Years Swimming Championships, to be held at Chandler, 23-25 March.

From the College Sport Captain ROUND 4 WRAP UP

This week’s Round Wrap Up was written by Gilroy House Captain and Co-Captain of the AIC Swimming team; Hunter Dreghorn:

Round 4 of Term 1 sport saw a busy schedule lined up. The rain retreated and all 1st teams were in full action against St Edmunds as well as the AIC swimming championship taking place on Monday.

The 1sts VI volleyball boys had a convincing win, 3 sets to nil, with the powerful combination of Toby Bergh and Flynn Fuller continuing to grow throughout this season.

1st XVIII AFL gained a confidence booster with their first win of the season which was well deserved. A highlight was Jari who kicked the final goal of the game in front of the swarm.

A loss last week demanded the 1st XI cricket to deliver, and deliver they did with a dominating performance to get the ball rolling. Year 11 student Cooper Mackie played a class innings scoring 74 runs.

The annual AIC swimming championship at Chandler started in full swing on Monday with a passionate Year 11 and 12 crowd motivating the boys to take on the fierce competition. The months of hard work the coaches and swimmers had dedicated was clear with almost every single person achieving personal bests on the day. One-hundredth of a second was the difference between winning and losing races. Although the boys finished off the massive day with cracking team relay performances proving the strength and depth of Marist swimming, the scoreboard read 2nd, with St Peters claiming victory. The outstanding efforts of all boy’s part of the swimming program was evident on the day and all involved should be extremely proud of their achievements.

Good luck to all teams this weekend!

This week Tom Collier sat down with our 1st VI Volleyball Coordinator Adam Knight and AIC Swimming Co-Captain, Hunter Dreghorn.

From the College Sport Captain

What has been your involvement in Ashgrove swimming throughout your time at the college?

For me, I started swimming at the end of grade 4, still at primary school, in the old Pool with Derek Cameron, Mr Wooldridge and Mr Cois as coaches. I started off doing it for fitness and then the competitive swimming culture drew me in. Also, because my mates from primary school were doing it and I thought it would be great to get involved and meet new friends which has developed into close friendships I still have today. Although I have had at least 8 different coaches in my time swimming at Marist, they have all managed to make me fall asleep before the 2nd period and pushed me to achieve my personal best each year.

What has it been like to captain the swimming team this year, alongside Josh Small?

Obviously, its privilege to captain such a squad especially with the calibre of captains that had gone before me. This had been part of the reason why I continued to show up every day and push myself so I could be one of the seniors that I once looked up to. Everyone in the team shares the same desire to achieve our personal best and to push our bodies to breaking point. This has made leading the team generally quite easy; due to our shared goal. Although, my main goal as Captain was to keep the culture of swimming alive which is the reason I still swim. All open seniors helped Josh and myself achieve this goal, through war cries, continuing the brotherhood with the boys, making friendship with the younger ones, and encouraging everyone to work hard in the early part of the season as sometimes it’s hard to see the purpose of pushing yourself for one carnival 5 months away.

The AIC Championships just finished on Monday, what was your perspective on the day?

It was clear on the day that we were the champion team rather than the team of champions. The atmosphere from the seniors in the swarm and keen parents pushed almost every single boy to achieve personal bests which was a fantastic pay off for all of the swimmer’s hard work. The freestyle relays at the end of the long day are always the highlight of the event showing not only the depth of the swimming program at the school but also defying the team culture of not only swimming for yourself, but for the team. Although the boys came 2nd the difference between St Peters and Marist over the last few years continue to shorten and I’m confident the team next year will able to get the win we all deserve.

TIME OUT WITH ... HUNTER DREGHORN

TIME OUT WITH ... ADAM KNIGHT

Who have been some of your favourite players to coach over the years?

The MCA 1st VI team in 2016 holds a special place for me. The quality of the young men in my first Ashgrove Volleyball team, after I arrived at the school, really did consolidate for me that I was in the right place. Great men make great Volleyballers, and Volleyball makes great men.

Now as the coach of the 10A’s as well as the assistant coach of the First VI, how are you enjoying these new roles so far?

Coaching is a journey of learning. When you stop learning yourself, you stop being able to effectively facilitate others to learn. The jump to coaching other teams outside of the 1st VI has been refreshing. With a new philosophy of coaching for reading the game and improving our out-of-system play being employed across the program this year, these roles allow me to promote this approach throughout all our teams. It is challenging but fun!

AIC CRICKET 2020 - ROUND 4 VS SEC - SATURDAY 29 FEBRUARY

TEAM TEAM REPORT

7A The 7As went down to St Edmunds over the weekend. After winning the toss and bowling first, the Eddies batsman got off to a good start. Xavier Cheeseman bowled well taking two wickets at the top. With a lift in intensity and chat in the final session, the boys came back to restrict Eddies to 112 off their 30. The Marist boys got off to a reasonable start but after losing three quick wickets, Fletcher Cabot (19*) and Seb Gardiner (25) steered the ship, putting Ashgrove into a winning position. However, some poor selection combined with run-outs saw St Edmunds record a win for the ages.

It was good for the boys to learn that you have to show up to every game 100% and that you should never underestimate your opposition. Every game is up for grabs.

7B The boys were sent in to bat on a lovely deck at Villanova. Quick wickets fell due to wonderful bowling by the Villa boys. Cam McPhee held up his end batting at 4 with a score of 15 of 31 balls. This brought us back into the game, but eventually, we were all out for 65 runs. The boys came into bowling with a lot of faith and belief that we could defend our total. However, the villa boys scored quickly, ran between wickets very effectively. They reached our total on the 20th over with 5 wickets down.

7C Effervescent batting from Will Kennedy and Matt jones really laid the foundation for a good innings. The team seems to be getting the hang of making the most of the limited overs format. The spirit of the boys batting and bowling continues to grow as does the fielding. Theo Knight took two wickets and continues to improve. Andrew Woodward is a pleasure to watch with his left arm swing bowling. On his day – unplayable. Sam Millot continues to be a thoughtful and courageous bowler and his wicket was well deserved. Hopefully the boys can continue to believe in themselves and uphold the standards they have set both on and off the field.

7D The 7D’s had yet another strong performance on the weekend winning by 10 wickets. Yet again the boys started incredibly well in the field; dismissing Villanova for 47 runs. Additionally, the performance with bat was a standout of the morning. The team posted a season high score of 1/116 which was gained through explosive and powerful hitting. A great all-round performance from the 7D’s which they should be proud of.

7F GREEN In spite of some heavy-hitting from Iona, the boys managed to bowl economically and take a few key wickets to limit Iona to 89 (Jack Ackert 1/7, Koren 1/12).

In reply, Koren anchored the top order with a steady score of 13 n.o., whilst Max (16 n.o.) and Eamon (13) built a strong partnership. Unfortunately, the match was deemed a draw due to time constraints, but the team remains unbeaten.

7G BLUE Great game of cricket with the mighty 7G Blue team coming away victorious, the boys showed great sportsmanship and chased down Iona’s total in 18 overs. Some great batting from Alex Wheeler (16 off 18) and solid bowling from Maxwell helped guide the boys to victory. Jack Montocchio is to be commended for his encouragement throughout both innings!!

AIC AFL 2020 - ROUND 4 VS SEC - SATURDAY 29 FEBRUARY

TEAM TEAM REPORT

1st XVIII The firsts went back to basics and hunted the ball in packs with determination against St Edmunds and it paid off with a 56-point win. Hard at the football with a lot of run and carry the boys were first to the ball and used the ball efficiently when moving the ball forward. Goalkickers all over the ground and nearly every player won their position, which was pleasing. It was important for us to bounce back and the boys did it well. Jarai’s goal from the boundary in the final stages of the match in front of the Ashgrove crowd was a highlight. There were standout performances all over the ground, but what was most pleasing was the boys second effort and overall teamwork.

Intermediates Year 8/9

Well, after a tough first-up game vs Lauries the boys were looking forward to Friday night and getting some 6 pointers. From the get-go, Oliver Cottam led the way superbly in ruck, and he was well supported by the other on-ballers in Clements, McLean, Rosenbrook, J Thompson and Knapp. The wings in Cournane and McClure were also very strong and tackling well to stop the ball exiting our forward line. With this dominance, the ball spent a lot of time in our front half, Bugsy Urquhart along with George Wood had multiple shots at goal. The Williams twins were also finding plenty of the footy and while not busy the boarder’s half-back line of Munroe Wood, O’May and H Thomson was virtually impassable. As the game wore on, our year 8s thrived, with Pittman, Berwick, Caughley and Kazzi all scoring goals, plus Burnell and Scarce starting to find the footy around the ground. With such a dominant display, we were able to rest some of our more experienced players and many of the year 8s played significant minutes, which is invaluable for their future development. The lads ran out 102-point winners. The best Marist win thus far by an 8/9s team. Top goal scorers were George Wood 4, Ned Rosenbrook 3 and Jack Urquhart 2.

Juniors – Year 7 After last week’s hard loss against St Laurence’s the boys were incredibly eager to take the victory over St Edmunds. By focusing in training and developing a greater understanding of the game and how to move the ball effectively around the field, the boys were able to break down the St Edmunds defence incredibly well. From the first bounce saw an outstanding centre clearance involving Ollie Reeves and Ben Player combine to forge an excellent first forward 50 entry for the boys. This entry was then capitalised on by James Milner snapping from about 20m out. All-day the boys were excellent around the contest and with their newly gained knowledge were able to distribute the footy effectively to enable many attacking opportunities. The final result being 15.11 101 (MCA) to 0.0 0 (SEC), admirable mentions include Archie Murray, James Milner, Carter McDonald, Ollie Reeves and captain on the day Ethan Schultz.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

6A Another brilliant display of teamwork and sportsmanship from the boys. A particular mention must be made of Jonah Wilde & Will Easter’s classic catches in the field. Well done boys!

6B Winning the toss and electing to bowl, on the back of 26 wides, 20 byes and some good bowling from Toby McCormack 2/11 (3) and Matt Murdoch 2/6 (2) the MCA 6B team restricted Ambrose Treacy to 109. Despite early promise from Fletcher Wessling 16* and some middle order hitting from Benji Blaszczyk 24, Marist ultimately faced too many dot balls and were unable to reach the total set by ATC, falling short by 21 runs.

6C The 6Cs had their first home game of the season against Ambrose Tracey’s on Saturday, winning the toss and bowling first. It was another tight bowling display restricting Ambrose Tracey to 56 off the 20 overs. A few early run outs sent scares throughout the boys as well as parents on the sideline to be 3-3 after 2 overs. However, the middle order settled in and Marist finished on a respectable 3-90 after time stopped their innings short after 16 overs.

6 Gold What a game it was on Saturday morning MCA 6 Gold vs. Iona 6 White. It was an incredible matchup between two great teams on Field 8. Iona performed dominantly in the first innings posting a convincing 81 runs. Facing adversity and a huge challenge in front of them, the boys showed what Marist pride is all about. The boys conquered the challenge and passed 81 runs with still an over to spare. A great sight to see the boys perform the war cry with pride. Special mention has to go to Aurelius Ferdinands who came in at the tail and got us over the hump hitting a few fours in the process. Well done boys. A great team effort.

6 White Marist showing good spirit in helping Villa in the field, the boys also showed good energy in field and were excited with every wicket. Sam Tealby batted well hitting with some great boundaries to give Marist the win.

6 Green Congratulations to the 6 Green for their win against Iona with MCA scoring 3/85 against Iona’s 3/61. Wickets were taken by Harry Zantiotis (an impressive throw from the outfield which took out the stumps!), Llewie Carrigan & Massimo Tsiros (having caught and bowled their opponents respectively). Special mention must go to Will MacTaggart who, with accurate bowling was unlucky not to take a wicket. The highlight of the match would be the four 4s struck by Oliver McGauley as he continues to impress with the bat. Top scorers for the day were Oliver (24) and Mitchell McCormick (6). The team continue to refine their skills and to work together as a team. They are particularly impressive with their willingness to score ‘the sneaky run’ off any ball they can. Well done team!

Marist College Ashgrove - The Buzz - Page 10

5A This week saw MCA bat first and post an unbeatable 120 runs for victory. Their ability to look for quick runs at any opportunity is a credit to their teamwork and calling whilst batting and allowed them to post such a large score. They backed up their batting performance with some very tight and consistent bowling. This week’s captain Thomas Keogh stepped up when his team needed him, leading by example, taking 3 catches and having a helping hand in a run out to secure victory. Well done boys!

5B Another good win from the Marist 5Bs with an outstanding all round effort. Excellent team bowling performance led by Patrick Collins taking 3 wickets in an over before Owen Aldridge started the chase perfectly with 20* to help the boys secure their second win.

5C Batting first, the 5C openers had a positive start. Good fielding and disciplined bowling from the Ambrose Tracey team restricted Marist to a hard fought 54. Early wickets in the second innings gave Marist a glimpse of victory, yet some middle over hitting from ATC secured them a comfortable victory.

5 Gold Well the boys had the opportunity to demonstrate our school motto on Saturday – Viriliter Age. When the going got tough and the wickets were down, they didn’t give up. I’d like to commend the boys for their enthusiasm, energy and encouragement of each other.

5 White As the boys of 5 White continue their successful season with a second win, a special mention must go to Felix, Henry and Ben for their efforts with the bat against a good bowling team. In the field the boys showed good concentration and determination to bring a win for themselves and their teammates. Here’s hoping that their undefeated season can continue.

5 Green Alex came onto the pitch as the 9th batter and from 10 balls he slammed 7 of them for the boundary. Great effort from Alex here.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

6A The 6A clash went down to the wire with the boys from MCA going down in a nail biter!! With a number of regular 6A players unavailable this weekend due to AIC swimming it was always going to be a difficult task for the boys, but when faced with the challenge all the boys rose to the occasion. Jack Webster was outstanding in front of goal, kicking 3 majors, Will Slater never gave up, made some crunching tackles and was a constant voice of encouragement. It was a great team effort and a disappointing loss, but everyone is looking forward to next week.

6B A brave performance from a short staffed 6Bs side. Battling with 9 on the field instead of a usual 12, the boys did excellently to smother Iona with relentless pressure and great ball movement. Under the scorching morning sun, the boys refused to roll over and pressed right until the end of the match. Extremely proud of the boys after this one; I’d hand out far more votes if I could.

5A Coming into this game the boys wanted to focus on attacking the footy. A very well structured Iona side challenged us early on. The boys held to the challenge well in the first quater but Iona eventually came out on top. Plenty of valuable football lessons can be taken from the weekend which we can build on.

5B They say that a week is a long time in footy……well the boys certainly found that out this weekend! We found ourselves up against a bigger, stronger group of boys who were very hungry for the ball in every contest. Despite the score line, I couldn’t fault the boys’ effort and their commitment right till the very end. We look forward to getting our full squad back on the field next weekend and know that anything can happen on any given weekend. Thanks for all the support from our parent group throughout the match.
