DISCOVERY Children’s Museum and Junior League of Las Vegas Present Kids in the Kitchen in Celebration of National Nutrition Month®

DISCOVERY Children’s Museum and the Junior League of Las Vegas (JLLV) are celebrating National Nutrition Month® again this year in March. It will be a special day full of fun and engaging activities and demonstrations on food and nutrition. In other words and back by popular demand, the Junior League of Las Vegas is taking over the museum to host Kids in the Kitchen.

Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen addresses the growing issues of childhood obesity and poor nutrition, as well as, raises awareness and provides solutions for this urgent problem. In this initiative, JLLV provides information and materials related to healthy eating and nutrition to children and their parents. This event directly involves children in demonstrations and lessons on how to select and prepare healthy, a ordable, meals and snacks.

National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign created by the American Dietetic Association. The campaign is designed to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

In celebration of the holidays, DISCOVERY Children’s Museum decked the fl oors with decorations that represented all of December’s festivities:

Hanukkah – 11/27 – 12/5/13Winter Solstice – 12/25/13Christmas – 12/25/13Kwanzaa – 12/26/13 – 1/1/14

Level 1 refl ected our collaboration with Nevada Ballet Theatre and The Nutcracker; in Eco City on Level 2, was Main Street American Christmas with strung lights, garland and wreaths; and Level 3 was a Winter Wonderland with large snowfl akes hung from the ceiling and Holiday Education Shadow Boxes with an education component on each of the December holidays.

A special thank you to our holiday decorating volunteers and Christopher Todd Design for helping create a magical environment throughout the museum!

IT'S YOUR CHOICE There is a direct relationship between what we do to our bodies and how they perform. It’s Your Choice is a health education exhibition designed to increase the awareness and understanding of the choices kids and families make every day that a ect their health. It emphasizes nutrition, physical activities and the development of important healthy lifestyle habits. Choice challenges are presented in engaging contexts that refl ect real-life situations (applying sunscreen or reading a nutrition information label) in order to help visitors connect “choice” with “outcome.” Humorous “game show” interactives are combined with high energy, as well

as critical thinking activities. It’s Your Choice engages both children and adults in the exploration and education of choices – facilitating conversation and underscoring the long-term benefi ts of healthy habits.

A truly magical evening was had by all in attendance at the beautiful Red Rock Resort & Spa on October 26, 2013. We are pleased to report net proceeds from “The Magic of Discovery” of more than $370,000 which will support the ongoing operations of the Museum. An additional $36,000 was raised during the evening from our “Fund a Magic Moment” appeal in support of our Admissions Subsidies Program which allows underserved students in our community to experience the “magic” of the Museum through fi eldtrips.

Judy and Ed Cebulko were honored at the event as the 2013 “Great Friend to Kids Award” recipients. The Cebulkos are dedicated to the prospering of the Museum and “igniting a love of lifelong learning” for children in Las Vegas and southern Nevada.

The Museum would like to thank all who were involved with this very successful evening. Whether you sponsored a table, purchased dinner or ra e tickets, donated goods and services or supported our “Fund a Magic Moment” appeal, you are a champion to the thousands of children who will have the magical experience of learning through play at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum. We especially want to recognize our 2013 event partners, for without these generous businesses the “magical” evening would not have been possible: Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa, By Dzign, Encore Production, Cashman Photo Enterprises, Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada and Best Agency.
