Dear Parents,

Welcome to Nova Southeastern University. We are pleased to welcome you and your student to our beautiful 300+ acre campus. We are a diverse multi-dimensional institution with programs from prekindergarten to doctorate that align with our commitment to life-long learning. NSU’s undergraduate programs provide a small college community within the 6th largest independent university nationally. Your student will have access to graduate school resources while earning his/her bachelor’s degree at NSU.

Toward that end you will note from time to time specific outreach to you as the parents of our most valuable resource, our students. We hope you feel connected and part of our Shark community.

Having been the parent of three college-age children, I recognize that we, as a university, are most effective when we form “partnerships” with parents. Therefore, I want to personally provide my e-mail ([email protected]) and my direct phone number ((954) 262-7282). If I may be of any service, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

We hope that this handbook will provide you with information that you find helpful and timely. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance to you or your student while at NSU.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brad WilliamsDean of Student Affairs

Traditions & Events

NSU is a campus rich with traditional events that make campus life exciting for students. We encourage you to participate in the many events or even get involved by assisting in the planning of one of the events — Your NSU experience will be unforgettable!

Nova Southeastern University is the nation’s seventh largest, not-for-profit, independent university, with more than 29,000 students and 130,000 alumni; a sprawling, 300-acre Fort Lauderdale-Davie campus; and a presence in nine countries around the world. Through five decades of explosive growth, our reputation for academic excellence and innovation continues to flourish. In 1964, what was then called Nova University was chartered as a graduate institution in the physical and social sciences. Over time, Nova added programs in law, education, business, psychology, computer science, and oceanography, and, in 1972, introduced its first off-campus course of study, in education. Soon, Nova became nationally recognized for its innovative distance learning programs. Today, field-based programs are located throughout Florida, in 23 states, and at selected international sites. While Nova University continued to expand its educational reach, Southeastern

University of the Health Sciences also was on an expansion course. Southeastern was created by osteopathic physicians committed to establishing a College of Osteopathic Medicine in the Southeast. As a result, Southeastern College of

Osteopathic Medicine, as it was first known, opened in 1981. During the 10-year span that followed (1987–1997), Southeastern added colleges of Pharmacy, Optometry,

Allied Health, Medical Sciences, and Dental Medicine. In 1994, Nova University merged with Southeastern University of Health Sciences to form Nova Southeastern University. So what exactly is NSU? We’re a small, nurturing, private, undergraduate college. We’re an exciting, multifaceted university. We’re young and agile, fearless and forward thinking. And we’re traditional. NSU doesn’t fit easily within a standardized niche, because neither do you.

to our campus to be interviewed by a faculty member. Students and staff get a personal look at the “life lessons” these various leaders have learned throughout their career while sharing their life’s stories with our audience.

Block Painting Party February 2011Student organizations are invited to paint the sidewalk strip from the University Center to the Parker Building to show NSU spirit.

Homecoming Week November 11-13, 2010Homecoming is a reunion weekend for alumni, students, faculty members, staff members, and friends of NSU. The social activities and athletic events organized by the Office of Student Activities, Special Events and Projects, Alumni Office, and Department of Athletics provide opportunities for the NSU community to celebrate shared experiences.

Anything that Floats Raft Race November 2010This event takes place during Homecoming and has proven to be most entertaining. NSU students compete by building their own raft and then racing it around Gold Circle Lake. Some boats make it, some don’t…but that’s the fun!

Family Weekend

November 5-6, 2010 Family Weekend offers parents and family members an opportunity to visit your student on a weekend packed full of activities and information. The entire family is welcome.

Community Fest Winter 2011NSU Community Fest is an annual

festival that celebrates and connects the NSU community. Traditionally held in the spring semester, the day consists of live entertainment, free food and drinks, large-scale games, activity booths, paddle boats on the lake, and much more. It is free to all NSU students, employees, and their families.

The Student Life Achievement Awards April 2011This annual spring awards ceremony honors NSU’s best in the following core values: scholarship, leadership, involvement, commitment, integrity, and responsibility.

The goal of this program is to further a sense of campus community and to recognize achievements by students and staff members. The Stueys, as the event is commonly known, provide much deserved recognition to students, faculty, and staff members within the university community.

The Flight Deck The Flight Deck, located on the first floor of the University Center, is a popular place on campus where students go to meet, greet, and grab a snack. The name, “The Flight Deck” originates from the fact that the land, now occupied by NSU, used to be the site of a Navy air base during World War II. Aircrafts practiced taking off and landing on the short “Flight Deck” of US Naval carriers. It is also ironic that NSU falls directly under the flight path for the Fort Lauderdale International Airport.

SEA Thursday

Held every Thursday in spine of the University Center, this is a great way to meet the different organizations on campus. Come out and enjoy free food, drinks, information and fun!

READING THE SYLLABUS

There is a syllabus for every course, and all syllabi are available online. The syllabus is the primary source of course information—everything from the professor’s email address, course assignments, and deadlines to the way the final grade will be calculated. Professors expect that students consult the syllabus regularly and are familiar with its contents.

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION

The newfound freedom that entering college students may feel can backfire on them. Many professors may not take

When students enter college, the ante is upped. Depending on the kind of

academic experiences they had in high school, students may not be used to the

kind of interactions they are expected to have with university professors in and out

of the classroom. Helping your student with these expectations can not only lead to

success in college, but also to the forging of meaningful connections that can last a

lifetime. You are encouraged to review the following information with your student

to maximize his or her knowledge of faculty expectations.

attendance, and for some courses, attendance may not be part of the final course grade. So students may believe that they don’t need to attend class. Whether or not a professor uses attendance as part of the final course grade—and it is up to the student to keep track of which courses have this requirement—it is in the best interest of a student to attend class regularly. The reading material assigned for a class is often the starting point of the learning process, which is developed in each class lecture and discussion. Your student’s participation in class discussion and activities is as much a part of the learning process as reading and studying out of class.

NSU GUIDE

ACADEMIC HONESTY

The widespread and easy availability of information in the world today often makes it difficult for students to know where their own ideas end and those of someone else begin. Nevertheless, professors expect the work of students to be their own. As deadlines loom and time gets short to complete assignments, some students may resort to shortcuts that lead to cheating or plagiarizing—and these shortcuts can have serious consequences, such as failing an assignment, failing a course, or even being suspended or expelled. Emphasizing to your student the importance of academic honesty may prevent problems in courses, but more importantly, encourages good academic habits that will serve him or her well in professional life.

ACADEMIC ETIQUETTE

The university environment is one in which ideas are generated, exchanged, and respected. As such, it is important for students to realize that they are entering an adult academic community and are expected to conduct themselves accordingly. This means the university expects students to adhere to a standard of behavior in and out of the classroom that includes respect for professors and fellow students. Talking, text-messaging, or

searching the internet during class lectures obviously conflict with this standard. But students also need to be aware of more subtle behaviors that matter in a university setting, such as listening to the ideas of their professors and fellow students and responding to them in a thoughtful and respectful way—both in person and online. Your student is expected to consider the opinions of others, even when they conflict with his or her own, and develop reasoned

responses. Your student should also be encouraged to adopt important academic habits, including being on time for class/appointments with professors and sending emails to professors that are clear and professional. If your student misses a class, he or she should never ask the professor if he or she “missed anything.” It is better to ask for an appointment to talk about the material and assignments covered during the missed class.

SPEAKING TO PROFESSORS

Students may often feel intimidated by professors. Therefore, if problems arise, they may be uncomfortable asking for help. Unfortunately, this silence may compound into a greater problem that by the end of a course, may not be possible to resolve. Your student needs to maintain open communication with his or her professors. All professors have office hours during which they are in their offices on specified days and times to assist students. Encourage your student to take advantage of these office hours. Getting to know faculty members has long-reaching benefits beyond an individual course. Your student’s faculty members are valuable resources for graduate school, employment recommendations, and as contacts in the field your student may want to pursue.

Professors are the primary academic resources for students on a college campus. They are experienced teachers and accomplished researchers, often working on cutting-edge projects that have global influence. Encouraging your student to take advantage of the opportunities they have in their relationships with their professors is the best advice you can give.

Students need to accept, reduce, 6. or decline their financial aid award(s) before their financial aid funds can be disbursed.

Don’t forget to continuously apply 7. for and identify scholarships. Encourage your student to regularly

schedule time for the scholarship search. The best place to start is the scholarship web page at http://www.nova.edu/financialaid/scholarships/

NSU students should check their 8. NSU (SharkLink) email daily. NSU email and WebSTAR are the official means that the OSFA will use to communicate with students. Encourage your student to keep up-to-date by checking their NSU email daily.

Payment Information

The Office of the University Bursar is responsible for billing students, collecting payments, setting up payment and deferment plans, issuing refunds from excess financial aid funds, and verifying students’ eligibility for a student loan. Please be aware of the following policies:Electronic bills are sent the middle of each month via email to the student’s NSU email address. Your student can authorize you to receive NSU eBill notifications via email by signing you on as an Authorized User.If a student owes a balance 30 days after the start of the semester, a hold and a $100 late fee will be placed on the account. This hold prevents future registrations, the viewing of grades, and access to the gym at the University Center. If a balance exists after 90 days, the account will be placed in collections.

Method of Payment

NSU accepts Visa, MasterCard, and American Express as well as payments made by traveler’s checks, cashier’s checks, personal checks, money orders, and wire transfer. International checks must be in U.S. funds only and drawn on a U.S. bank. For details, visit http://www.nova.edu/cwis/bursar/registration.html.

Payment Plans

Payment for tuition, fees, and other NSU charges are due in full at the time of registration. However, the NSU Office of the University Bursar offers a variety of payment plan options to assist students and their families in paying the balance. For information on 3-month and 10-month payment plans, visit the bursar web pages at www.nova.edu/cwis/bursar/payment.html.

Florida Prepaid College Plan

NSU accepts and bills the Florida Prepaid College Plan for tuition, fees, and dorm costs. However, the plans are based on the tuition rates of the tax assisted Florida public colleges and universities. The difference between NSU tuition and fee costs and the allocations through the Florida Prepaid College Plan is the sole responsibility of the student. If a student is on the unrestricted plan, the student must designate a dollar amount for up to the cost of tuition and fees. Students new to NSU must contact Florida Prepaid to authorize payments to NSU. Additionally, each term, the student must submit a copy of the front and back of the ID card with a signed statement indicating the amount to be invoiced.
