Other Announcements

June is National Safety MonthCourtesy of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Injuries can occur in many different situations and are a leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 45. Whether you're at work, home, commuting, on vacation, or partaking in other wellness activities, knowing risks associated with each activity and measures to guard against them is crucial. Take preventive measures to reduce injuries by educating yourself and communities that you're part of. Measures taken can help prevent falls, promote safe transportation habits, and increase knowledge of issues such as poisoning.

What are topics you can gain knowledge of to make a difference? Whether you are learning for the first time or refreshing your knowledge, the following topics are a great place to start: first aid, using medicines safely, bike safety, work safety, and sleep health. In just a short amount of time, you and your communities can be equipped to engage in proactive measures against injury.

To learn more about National Safety Month and find resources to share, utilize healthfinder.

Looking to Travel Often This Summer? Don't Forget Our Planet.

The environmental impact of tourism and travel is immense, with aircraft alone generating nearly 12% of the United States' greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. Plus, excessive tourism during a few months can leave immense damage for local communities that are left with no means to repair what has been lost. This summer, consider your trips carefully. The following tips can help make your travels better for the environment, while still allowing you to experience other parts of the globe or explore your local community:

First, consider local options to explore Madison and Wisconsin, such as the Wisconsin Hoofers Outing Club and paddle rentals for Lake Mendota. Set on a trip out-of-state to immerse yourself in nature? Consider renting equipment from the Wisconsin Union instead of buying, ultimately conserving resources and reducing the chance for dust to build up on unused equipment throughout the year.

Calculate your carbon footprint  and consider offsetting the emissions from your travel.

o Key: "offsetting" is paying for something with positive environmental impact, like planting a tree or investing in renewable energy, to balance out the harmful impacts of other choices (e.g. travel).

Consider flights that are direct instead of flights with connections. Nearly 25 percent of airplane emissions result from the take off and landing of airplanes, according to a 2010 NASA report.

When visiting locations in your destination, be sure to take care of the community and follow the popular rule to "leave it as you found it," when exploring. Being mindful of the natural environment and the community that supports it is crucial to reducing your environmental impact while traveling.

Consider finding ways to explore in a way that supports local communities, such as local tour guides and business offerings. This promotes the long-term health of a population in the area.

How to Avoid Common ScamsCourtesy of UW Credit Union

You’ve probably heard about scams targeting the university community. These tips can give you the knowledge and confidence you need to avoid common scams. Fake Check Scams The most common check scams begin with one of these situations:

You sold an item online and the buyer overpays. Surprise! You “won” a prize for a contest you didn’t enter. You’re overpaid as a “secret shopper.” You’re hired to do small jobs like dog walking and are paid too much.

In cases like these, the person who sent you a check will ask you to send back money or buy gift cards to cover the amount you were overpaid, or to cover extra “fees.” After that, you find out the check you received is not real. As a result, you lose money.

Government-Themed Scams In most cases, you’re contacted by someone claiming to be from a tax or a law enforcement agency. They warn that you’ll be punished for not paying fees or fines and tell you to transfer money elsewhere. In these scenarios, you’re tricked into giving away money. Sublet Scams If you’re subletting your apartment, you might be contacted by an “interested renter” who sends you a check for more than the amount of the security deposit and the first rent payment. Then they’ll ask you to send the extra “overpayment” money back to them. This is a scam, because the check they sent you is not real. Common “Warning Signs” You can outsmart scammers by watching out for the following:

Someone overpaying when they send you a check People asking you to provide access to your account

Phone calls, text messages or emails requesting personal information, or to click a link

What to Do Take these steps to defend yourself against these and other scams:

Stop and ask questions Don’t send funds Never provide your online banking user ID or password, or your debit card PIN Seek financial advice/support

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be in a much better position to protect your finances and personal information.
