Joining Red Cross as a University Club Member Every semester, Red Cross university clubs runactivities and events with and for their membersto promote the work of Red Cross on campusand in their local community. As a member youcan be involved in Red Cross activities such asblood drives, awareness raising campaigns,public lectures, workshops and conferences,social activities and fundraisers.

You will have access to leadershipopportunities, such as leading club activitiesand events. There are also some great, moreformal roles such as being on the UniversityClub Executive Committee or even the RedCross Youth Advisory Committee.

As well as getting involved in your universityclub’s activities and events, you may also beinterested in taking on a volunteer role in one ofthe Red Cross seven priority areas orundertaking training through Red Cross College.

You can also take advantage of the AustralianRed Cross Young Humanitarians Facebookpage, staying up‐to‐date with Red Cross news,information, volunteer and employmentopportunities.

You will be joining the worlds largest volunteermovement as a member of the Australian RedCross. This means you’ll be signing on to ourseven fundamental principles and be receivinga Red Cross membership card, regular memberand volunteer newsletters. You can getdiscounts at Red Cross stores and you willscore an invitation to the Red Cross AGM inyour State or Territory.

As a member of an Australian Red Crossuniversity club, it isn’t a question of whetheryou will make a difference, but how. Check outhow Tim made a difference by being auniversity club member.

Emergency services in Australia. We arecommitted to strengthening and extendingour emergency services to assist allAustralians to prepare for, respond to andrecover from emergencies.

International programs. Together with ourRed Cross Red Crescent partners around theworld, we work to promote safer, healthierand more sustainable lives for people indeveloping countries, particularly in theAsia‐Pacific region.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander strategy.We are committed to building long‐term andrespectful partnerships by working withAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,communities and organisations todetermine and lead their own solutions.

Social inclusion. Red Cross is committed toan inclusive society where all people arevalued, their differences are respected andtheir basic needs are met. Red Cross buildsbridges for vulnerable and socially isolatedpeople back into the community.

Stronger communities. We work in foodsecurity, youth health and wellbeing andother programs with children, young people,and families in a range of ways, that focus onthe unique strengths of individuals andcommunities.

International humanitarian law. The idea ofinternational humanitarian law (IHL) is simple:even wars have limits. Also known as the lawsof war, IHL protects people who are not takingpart in the fighting, such as civilians, woundedsoldiers and prisoners of war.

Migration support. We provide support torefugees, asylum seekers, immigrationdetainees and other people who arevulnerable as a result of migration. We dothis through a range of services andprograms that protect and uphold thehealth, dignity and wellbeing of vulnerablemigrants.

Our work is focused around seven priority areas

Member ProfileTim came to Australian Red Cross in2011 volunteering with EmergencyServices in response to theQueensland floods. Inspired by hisexperience and wanting toencourage others to get involved Tim joined the University ofQueensland’s Red Cross uni club.

In 2012 Tim was elected as clubpresident and the uni club had a bigyear of social activities, fundraisersand awareness campaigns with over 100 new members recruited.More than $1000 was raised anddonated to the Red Cross YouthHomelessness Service.

Tim now works part‐time with RedCross in Queensland and is gratefulfor his time as a Red Cross uni clubmember ‐ “Being a part of a team ofdedicated Young Humanitarians hasopened me up to new friends,experiences and opportunities… it’s hard to beat”.
