About United Way of Amarillo & CanyonUnited Way of Amarillo & Canyon (UWAC) works together with area nonprofits and other community focused organizations in Randall and Potter Counties, home to the Cities of Amarillo and Canyon.

A part of United Way Worldwide, UWAC improves lives in its service region by fighting for the health, education and financial stability of every person in our community.

UWAC has been helping those in need in this region for the past 93 years.

Since our inception, we have been working hand-in-hand with community leaders and organizations to solve complex problems and provide a better life for our citizens. Through the collective power of community, we have been providing funds for the betterment of our service region, honoring the traditions of our forefathers, and supporting needs as they have changed, evolved and grown.

On an annual basis we typically engage over 400 volunteers to help us raise and allocate approximately $2.5 Million to fund programs focused on changing the struggles our area families face.

What It’s Like to Work Here

I have worked with United Way staff for the past two years. Even though I am a temp from the MET program, I feel like I was welcomed from day one. Everyone is nice and polite and take pride in their jobs. This office works as a team and are able to accomplish their goals. I truly feel like I have a work family that I’m proud of. --Katherine, 2yrs

It's an incredible fulfilling feeling to know that you are needed... by the community, the volunteers and staff. My longevity with UWAC provides me the opportunity to share history, knowledge and do research for so many loyal and steadfast individuals. It's about kinship in so many ways, as we all work in partnership for those in situations of hardship to make life healthier, financially stable, educationally sound, and to provide the minimum resources necessary for physical well-being. --Charla, 27yrs

Working for the United Way is very rewarding. It's an honor to be a part of something that helps people in need. Our staff is made up of some really special and talented people who love what they do!--Kimberley, 3yrs

Working at United Way is rewarding to me on two levels. I know that the work I do is important because it is part of a community effort to take care of one another; the quality of life of my neighbors, friends and family is influenced in part by my work. Secondly, we are a family at United Way; we are all here because of our compassion for people and that is evident in how we treat each other. United Way employees laugh together, cry together and are there for each other, always willing to help in any circumstance. --Jeff, 2yrs

Working at United Way has given me a true “work family” that cares about the employees, and has shown me that an employee is not just a seat filler, but a true person. Everyone in this organization would go out of their way to help another employee, and that's how a workplace should be. --Christina, 1yr

Our Focus

At UWAC we believe it is not enough to feed a hungry family or protect a child from violence; we need to change the conditions that led to hunger and violence in the first place.

Therefore, in 2015, we initiated a comprehensive community status assessment to discover the most pressing issues in our service area and determine what the true causes of those issues are. As a result, the following three themes were discovered as the most significant factors keeping Randall and Potter County families vulnerable.

POVERTYeducationThe role education plays in a person’s life cannot be overstated. While Potter County has seen an increase in graduation rates, Randall County has seen a decrease of 4% since 2008. This is particularly troubling, because without at least a high school education, the individual’s earning potential is severely capped, setting them up to need charitable and governmental help over the duration of their lives. It also disrupts the local economy and economic growth by limiting the labor pool. Studies show a child with a mentor is more likely to graduate from high school and not participate in risky behavior.

According to our research, more children are being born into poor families than those of moderate or above average means. Poverty has always played a role in keeping people in a vulnerable place with a lack of resources. This trend is especially devastating because the problem is growing. Teen pregnancy continues to be a major cause of poverty in our communities. In fact, more than 1 out of 2 births in Potter County are to unmarried mothers. According to the Brookings Institutions and The Pew Economic Mobility Project, if a person will complete high school, work full-time, and marry before having children, he or she can reduce the chances of living in poverty by 98%.

obesityChildhood obesity is another issue for our area. We have partnered with the local health authorities to bring a program called MEND to our community. “Mind, Education, Nutrition, Do it”, is a 10-week program that encompasses all aspects of youth’s lives. With parental intervention and evidence-based programming, the goal is that children understand the basic tenets of nutrition and physical exercise. Doing this has a positive impact on the future of our communities most vulnerable, the next generation.

What the results of the comprehensive community status assessment did was help us focus on the true issues of our area and now allows us to be more strategic and focused in the organizations we choose to give to. We are fixated on outcomes. It is no longer acceptable for organizations to just provide a service – UWAC demands that all partnering organizations adequately produce substantial results in the lives of the people they serve. In turn, UWAC is able to tie every dollar donated to a direct impact made in the community. This creates a great foundation for fundraisers to effectively show potential donors why their investment in our organization is valid, worthwhile and necessary.
