Game Time! Objective: Students will learn to evaluate an expression by substituting a variable with a known value
Why is it important to come to a certain agreement on procedural rules (in sports/games, language, mathematics)?
Turn and Talk!
Objective: Students will learn to evaluate an expression by substituting a variable with a known value
Expression-Let’s take a look
Expression
• Expression- A number or combination of numbers and symbols that stand for a value
Examples of expressions
• 5x – 3• 2 + 2• B• 5• 7-x• 18a• 25÷5
Objective: Students will learn to evaluate an expression by substituting a variable with a known value
Now that we know what expressions are, let’s learn how to evaluate them… but what does it mean to evaluate something? Objective: Students will learn to evaluate an expression by substituting a variable with a known value
Evaluating is easy!
Evaluate
• Evaluate- To look at information or facts and make a decision based on the information given
Example of evaluation
• b= 5
• b – 3
• When I evaluate this expression I see that the expression is 2, because b=5 and 5-3 is 2
Objective: Students will learn to evaluate an expression by substituting a variable with a known value
Now you try!
Evaluate Answer:
17b= 7
b + 107

In-Class assignment…
• Work independently to complete the in-class work on Evaluating Expressions
• Your teacher will monitor your progress while you work
• When you finish, please work on Math Minutes, Complete corrected homework, or Read your choice book
• Do Not raise your hand. Look at your notes for help or skip the question and work on a different question until your teacher comes to your desk.
Objective: Students will learn to evaluate an expression by substituting a variable with a known value
Exit Ticket…
• What is something that I learned in today’s lesson that I didn’t know how to do that I now know how to do?
• I wonder…
