Understanding Cisco's Internet of Things Story: By the NumbersImage source: Cisco.

Cisco estimates that just 1% of the world's devices are connected to the Internet, and it's betting that there's huge opportunity in getting those non-connected devices talking to each other and making sense of the resulting data.Image source: NASA; Wikimedia Commons.

Cisco's expectation for $19 trillion in IoT-related profit and savings through 2024 breaks down to:

$14.4 trillion in private sector $4.6 trillion in public sectorInfographic source: LTC Commission report pg 23

Research firm Gartner expects roughly 21 billion connected devices by 2020.

Through 2024, Cisco expects IoT-related opportunities in a wide range of industries, including:

If IoT data can be harnessed to boost profitability across industries by even a small amount, it will add up to a huge difference over time.

As just one example, the American Traffic Research Institute estimates that traffic delays cost U.S. trucking companies roughly $50 billion annually, and a 1% efficiency improvement in this area alone would free up $1 billion in just two years. 1%Infographic source: LTC Commission report pg 23

Cisco anticipates that most businesses are doomed if they cannot digitally transition, and the company believes that Internet of Things data insights will revolutionize operations across industries.

There's an incredible amount of hype surrounding IoT, and more conservative IoT expectations from peers and research firms put Cisco's most touted IoT targets on the very bullish end of the spectrum. But even if rollout lags behind Cisco's targets, the company appears right to bet on the promise of connectivity.

In addition to tailoring its router and switching hardware for IoT interfacing and security needs, Cisco is making big investments in IoT assets and partnering with industry leaders Ericsson and Intel to improve networking capabilities and pave the way for the data boom. A trend toward greater connectivity is already evident, and Cisco stands to see huge payoffs as a communication facilitator.
