reasons why

There are many fantastic reasons to pursue study: broadening your mind, advancing your skills, specialising in your area of interest and increasing your earning and career potential. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy to decide when and how to study – or which university is the best fit for you. Here are ten clever reasons why it makes sense to choose La Trobe.

Ten6 |

High employability

Our graduates are highly sought after. Our strong relationships with industry leaders, such as Optus, The Australian Ballet and the Carlton Football Club, deliver exceptional results and open doors for our students. Many of our courses are accredited by industry peak bodies and designed in close consultation with industry leaders.

Our Work Integrated Learning program

Entering the workforce can be nerve-wracking. You need to learn not only practical skills and knowledge, but also how to conduct yourself professionally. Our Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program gives you hands-on industry experience while you’re studying, bolstering your chances of success in the job market.

Our Career Ready program, developed with industry leaders

What you do at university is important to us. However, it’s what you do after university that interests us the most. Studying is a significant investment, so we’re committed to making sure you graduate job ready. Our Career Ready program helps you actively prepare for life beyond La Trobe. We work closely with industry to find out what they want in graduates – now and in the years to come. For more on Career Ready, see page 8.

Our Accelerator Program for budding entrepreneurs

Almost half of Australia’s jobs are at high risk of being affected by automation. How can you prepare? One way is to take advantage of the La Trobe Accelerator Program. Successful applicants receive up to $20,000 funding (equity-free) to fast-track business ideas and pursue a lean start-up business model. Create a market strategy, connect with business leaders and community decision-makers, and be mentored by accomplished professionals.

Our 23 double degrees

Choosing a degree can sometimes be a battle between your inner idealist and your inner pragmatist. Your dream job might call for a nuanced skillset that one degree alone can’t deliver, or you might want to explore your passion while also making practical decisions. Never fear: our double degrees boost your employment potential, diversify your skillset and allow you to combine your passion with your chosen profession.

Our strong global reputation

We’re internationally renowned for academic excellence and innovation. We’re one of Australia’s research leaders, with our highly respected teaching and research staff celebrated for addressing some of the most significant issues of our time. This has been recognised in the 2018 QS World University Rankings, placing La Trobe in the top 1.4 per cent of universities globally.

Form lifelong friendships. And don’t forget: joining a society related to your course could boost yourcareer, as they often host careers nights and professional networking events. The Career Ready team definitely care about whether we get jobs, and because of that I really felt that La Trobe was invested in me.

I highly recommend Career Ready. It does make a difference and it will set you apart. If you’re feeling unprepared, or you don’t know what to do to land a job, it’s such a great program to tap into.’

Aspire Early Admissions Program

‘I was volunteering at a community radio station and coordinating a number of fundraisers. My careers teacher told me about Aspire, so I got to applying!

I loved that my offer came earlier than the VTAC offers, which meant I walked into my exams knowing there was a spot waiting for me at La Trobe.

Aspire held a number of events to make us feel welcome, and as soon as I walked onto the campus I felt at home.

The Aspire program helped me realise that academic results are really important, but helping the community gives you skills you can’t get in a classroom.’

‘I did a lot of research into which university would suit me best, and after reading about

La Trobe’s affiliations with some of Melbourne’s acute hospitals, I decided on La Trobe. Currently

I’m employed by The Alfred, where I work in the adult burns unit. It’s challenging, it’s fast-paced,

and it’s amazing.’

‘I knew I wanted to study at La Trobe, but choosing the right course was daunting. Before applying through VTAC, I received great support at La Trobe’s Open and Experience Days, and when things got really serious, I booked a one-on-one consultation to make sure all my questions were answered. I got an offer into my dream course and was guided through all the stages of becoming a student. I’m now studying applied science and occupational therapy, and I haven’t looked back!’

You can also access exclusive scholarships if you’re from a regional area, if you’re an Indigenous Australian, if you live on campus at a residential college, if you’re studying at a regional campus or if you’re enrolled in a particular course.

Advanced StandingIf you’ve done relevant formally recognised studies at another uni or TAFE, you may get credit – or Advanced Standing – for some or all your studies when you enrol at uni. This means you may finish your degree faster.

Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR)VTAC or UAC gives you an ATAR (a number between 0.00 and 99.95) to rank your Year 12 results against other students’ results.

Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)When you’re offered a CSP, the government subsidises your course fees and you only need to pay for part of your tuition – known as the ’student contribution amount’. All domestic undergraduate places at La Trobe are CSPs.

Core subjectsThe compulsory subjects in any given course.

Entry requirements These include general entry requirements such as English language and course entry. Course prerequisites and other extra requirements such as interviews and portfolios are outlined on our website: latrobe.edu.au/courses

Offers of admission into La Trobe courses are made on the basis of academic merit, likelihood of success and the number of places available.

HECS-HELPAn Australian Government loan scheme to help eligible students enrolled in a CSP pay their student contributions.

HonoursHonours studies are advanced studies attached to undergraduate degrees, giving you a higher qualification than a three-year degree. Many people do Honours so they can go on to postgraduate studies, and most La Trobe undergraduate courses offer Honours. Depending on your course, this may involve an additional year of study, although some courses have it built in.

MajorA sequence of related subjects spread over the duration of an undergraduate course. You’ll usually undertake at least one subject from your major each semester, and you have to pass each subject in order to move onto the next one in the sequence.

Non-Year 12 applicantsThere are many entry schemes for applicants who are not recent Year 12 students. These include the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), Work Recognition Program and Tertiary Enabling Program.

PathwaysThe different educational options leading to a particular qualification. For example, Year 12 is one pathway to a uni course. Year 12 to TAFE to uni is another pathway. Read more on pages 52 and 53.

PostgraduateThe second level of university study. Usually, you can only begin postgraduate studies once you’ve completed an undergraduate degree.

PrerequisitesThe subjects you must have completed at school (and/or any other qualifications you need) to be eligible for consideration in a specific uni course.

UndergraduateThe first level of university study. This usually refers to a three-year single Bachelor’s degree, although it also includes Honours studies, which can take an additional year. There are also double degrees that usually take at least four years full time.).

Work Integrated Learning (WIL)WIL and work placements integrate educational theory and workplace experience, preparing you to be work ready, world ready and future ready.

La Trobe University acknowledges that our campuses are located on the lands of many Traditional Custodians in Victoria and New South Wales. We recognise their ongoing connection to the land and value their unique contribution to the University and wider Australian society.

La Trobe University is committed to providing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, both as individuals and communities, through teaching and learning, research and community partnerships across all our campuses.

The wedge-tailed eagle (Aquila audax) is one of the world’s largest, and the Wurundjeri people – Traditional Owners of the land where our Melbourne campuses are located – know the wedge-tailed eagle as Bunjil, the creator spirit of the Kulin Nations.

There is a special synergy between Bunjil and the La Trobe University logo of an eagle. The symbolism and significance for both La Trobe and for Aboriginal people challenges us all to gamagoen yarrbat – to soar.
