Objective The objective of the UGT certification process is to introduce and train workers to use the various UGT products. This training will aide in building or rehabilitating a manhole structure that would last the test of time.
Scope The scope of the manual is to follow a step by step process as indicated below. Site Planning Site preparation Cone Prep. Use of Crack n Seal Use of Grout n Patch Height Adjustment Calculation Securing the first Grade Ring to Structure Stacking of Rings Application of Secure n Seal to finish course. Applying Veil to Chimney Section. Apply H2S Safe to interior of Structure.
Products:
Grade Ring The Grade Ring is an elevation product that has matching interlocking features on the top and bottom of the ring. This ring is used for the first course or any intermediate courses. If required, multiple grade rings can be stacked on each other for increasing the height. For elevations below or equal to 2.00 inches a grade ring is not required.
Finish Ring This Finish Ring has matching interlocking feature on the bottom surface to mate up with the grade ring below. The top surface of the Finish Ring is flat for mating to frame. UGT also has a Restoration rings that are 2.00” and 3.00” that can also be used as a finish ring. The 2” Restoration rings have mating grooves on both sides, while the 3” Restoration ring has grooves only on one side.
Secure n Seal This is a caulking type application aides in sealing the rings to the cone section and the frame. This also provides water sealing between these surfaces. Secure n Seal’s bonding allows the installer to back fill without slippage of layers.
Veil Safe This two part system provides an exterior water barrier. The installer mixes part A into B and pours on the exterior rim of the frame. The mixture will flow down the sides of the chimney and the installer can finish painting for completing the coverage.
Crack n Seal This product is a two part system that comes in a plural component caulk gun. The product is a fast set
polyurea that is used to fill in cracks, fix chips that cause water in-flow on a cone structure.

Grout n Patch The product is a synthetic mortar that is stronger than organic mortar that is currently being used today.
This mortar needs no water and is comprised of epoxy and special silica sand. This product is used where
the top surface of the cone or chimney structure is damage and unsuitable as an even load bearing surface.
H2S Safe This product is a hand applied; low sag epoxy coating that is used as an interior lining of a chimney
structure. This product protects the pre-cast and cast iron from chemical attack and improves longevity.
Certification Process Certification requires the attendance of installers for live demonstration and hands on installation. This will be coordinated by UGT and or its distributors. Certificates will be issued to the installation company. The installation company will be responsible retraining new personal in utilizing the UGT system. UGT and its distributors are certified to train outside entities.

Site Planning
Determine the Grade Elevation The first step in planning the site is to determine the elevation units that would be required. UGT has many
options in elevating a manhole or catch basin efficiently and accurate so understanding the product options is
very helpful. The first step is to determine the grade elevation height.
Step 1: Measure the height of the frame and cover. Frame Height
Step 2: Measure the depth of the desired surface to the top surface of the cone. Total Height.
Step 3: To determine how much grade elevations subtract the frame height from the total height.
Total Height - Frame Height= Grade Elevation
Determining the Elevation Units Required UGT has elevation units for Storm, Sanitary and Catch Basin. The following product descriptions are helpful in
understanding the type of elevation unit, height and part numbering scheme. This will allow the installer to
easily select UGT product and have it available when the work is being executed.
Storm and Sanitary
Product Type UGT elevation units come in two types of rings; a grade ring which takes up the majority of the elevation
height and a finish ring which allows the installer to micro-finish the elevation.
Grade Ring The grade ring has male and female interlocks which aid in stacking and location.
Finish Ring The finish ring has female interlocks which aid in stacking and location with the grade rings. The top surface
is flat to provide a surface to adhere the frame casting.

Catch Basin
Product Type Catch basins are used in water drainage situations. The catch basins can be square or rectangles in shape.
Unlike the sanitary and storm elevation units, UGT’s catch basins are flat or angled with no interlocking
feature. This allows the installers to offset layers when the curb and the inlet do not align.
Product Available UGT with its interlocking and water jet technology can make any size for the customer. The height scheme for
the parts is different than the sanitary and storm configuration and is shown in the following table.
Flat Heights Angled Heights
Product Nomenclature The product nomenclature is similar to the round sanitary and storm. The ID dimensions of catch basin
elevation unit are called instead of the diameter.

Determining Elevation Height There are two types of height adjustment calculations; one, straight with no fall, two, angled to match
the grade. This section will show how these calculations can be made and how to use the selection
chart in the appendix.
Determining Flat Elevation Height The following instructions are the step by step method for determining the grade elevation height for a flat
manhole site.
Determine Angled Elevation Height The following instructions are the step by step method for determining the grade elevation height for a angled
manhole site.
Step 1: Measure the height of the frame and cover. Frame Height
Step 2: Select the Finish Angle Ring based on the Fall calculation.
Fall =(A -B)
Total Height - Frame Height= Grade Elevation
Step 3: Take the total height ( A ), subtract the Frame height and the l argest height dimension from the finish Angle.
Measured “!” Height – Frame Height – “!” Height Finish Ring = Grade Ring Height
Step 1: Measure the height of the frame and cover. Frame Height
Step 2: Measure the depth of the desired surface to the top surface of the cone. Total Height.
Step 3: To determine how much grade elevations subtract the frame height from the total height.
Total Height - Frame Height= Grade Elevation
Grade Elevation - Finish Ring Height = Grade Ring Height
Step 4: Start from the top down. Select F150
Finish Ring which is 1.5" in height. Subtract the Finish Ring Height 1.5" from the Grade Elevation Height to determine how much Grade Ring Height
is needed. Select Grade Rings that can take up this space. If no combination works then reduce the finish ring height and recalculate

Elevation Unit Selection Examples: Example 2 (Finish height of 1.5” doesn’t work)
This example shows the calculation where starting out using a 1 ½ inch finish ring and reselecting a finish ring to use a grade ring that UGT provides.
This example shows the 1 ½ inch finish didn’t work but changing to a 1 inch finish ring that the grade
ring should be 3 ½ inches in height.
For this example the installers will use:
1. 100Finish Ring
2. 350 Grade RingAngled Height Adjustment
The following shows the method for calculating and selecting UGT Rings for angled surface.
Step 1: Measure the height of the frame and cover. Frame Height

Site Preparation
Cutout To have full access to the chimney structure, there are many opinions on the size and shape of the cutout. UGT’s position is that in a road condition, the most successful configuration is a diamond shape that is cut in the direction of traffic. Without getting too technical, the tangential load of the wheel forces push on the manhole in the direction of the yellow arrow. The compaction surrounding has more sq. footage to distribute the resulting stresses. A round cutout just creates a wedge effect and a square cutout just reduces the amount of are to distribute stress. Holes should be dug square and not wedged. The configuration or shape of the hole does not affect the performance of the UGT system but does aide in overall surrounding longevity.
Once the cutout is completed the structure exposure has a few basic guidelines; Make sure the site has at least 24” clearance around the hole for worker access and dig 2 inches below the surface that will be home for the first elevation unit.
The clearance around the hole is for the worker so if Veil Safe is applied, there is enough room so the legs of the worker don’t drag across the surface. The 2” guideline is so there is surface area for Veil Safe to overlap and adhere to the structure. The next step is to wire brush the structure for adhesion purposes and to remove all loose dirt. The structure does not have to be pristine clean for adhesion of Secure n Seal and Veil Safe.

Cone Preparation Cone or top course preparation is crucial in the success of a bleed-free chimney structure. UGT provides 3 products that aid in fixing the top course or cone top. The first one is Crack n Seal. This product can fix cracks and cure in 7 minutes if applied properly. The second one is Grout n Patch which is a synthetic mortar that does not require water to mix. Before using these products, UGT would like to describe a simple technique of creating simple forms to best utilize the products.
Creating Forms
STEP 1 - APPLY SECURE N SEAL AS AN ADHESIVE
STEP 2 - TAKE STRIPS OF CARDBOARD AND STICK AND HOLD IN PLACE.
Be generous with the bead of Secure n Seal and press cardboard to insure seal This technique aides in reducing run off of Grout n Patch and Crack n Seal.

Once the cartridge is loaded, the product can then be squeezed through the mix head to fill the cracks.
In about 7 minutes, Crack n Seal will be tack free to the touch.
The cardboard can remain in place or can be removed after the Crack n Seal is cured. If there are multiple areas to fix, make sure they are prepared prior to applying Crack n Seal. The static mix nozzle will harden and be very difficult to use. If the installer does not use all of the Crack n Seal, remove nozzle and dispose and re assemble little plugs and penny and screw back on the plastic nut. Just do the reverse of the instructions above and go from C to A.

Elevation
Sanitary and Storm Installation
Methodology: UGT elevation methodology for sanitary and storm is very simple. Grade Rings are used to fill the majority of the vertical space, capped off by a finish ring to micro finish the elevation. Unless the top course or cone is badly damaged, Secure n Seal is used to adhere the bottom grade ring to the structure, and the finish ring to the frame.
Terminology: 1. Grade Ring: This ring has matching interlocking features on the top and bottom. This ring is used for the first course and any intermediate courses. If required, multiple grade rings can be stacked on each other for increasing the height. For elevations below or equal to 2.00 inches a grade ring is not required. 2. Finish Ring: This ring has matching interlocking feature to the grade ring with a flat surface on top for mating to frame. UGT also has a Restoration rings that are 2.00” and 3.00” that can also be used as a finish ring. The 2” Restoration rings have mating grooves on both sides, while the 3” Restoration ring has grooves only on one side. 3. Secure n Seal: This is a caulking type application where this non hardening adhesive secures and seals the rings to the cone section and the frame. This also provides water sealing between these surfaces. Secure n Seal’s bonding allows the installer to back fill without slippage of layers.

If the top course or the top of the cone is extremely damaged, Step 3 can be eliminated by laying a bed of mortar and sinking grade ring into bed of mortar. UGT’s Grout n Patch is the preferred method, for it will outlast existing mortar from chemical attack, erosion and provide superior adhesion.

Achieving Larger Angles than one Standard Finish Rings If the site has a larger angle than what can be achieved with a single Finish Angle Ring, the following technique is simple and very useful.
The first step is to select the two rings that will yield the fall required. Using Secure n Seal, bond finish angles together. If you need to work around the site and the rings are moving because the Secure n Seal has not taken hold yet; use the nailing technique shown above after you have bonded the two rings together. Repeat this process until the angle is achieved.
Achieving Compound Angles using Finish Angle Rings When the site slopes in two directions, using two UGT’s finish angle rings will help the installer to achieve a compound angle. The following is the methodology: Measure angle in the first direction, and select the finish angle accordingly. Try a Finish Angle ring in place to see if your measurement is correct. Measure angle in the second direction and select the finish angle. Try a Finish Angle ring in place to see if your measurement is correct. There will be some trial and error at this point to find the right second ring and position. Place both ring in position to achieve both slopes. Place Frame on top of both of the rings and check the grade matchup. Adjust frame and rings by rotating to grade. Once grade is achieved, then mark a line on the top course or grade ring to the frame. Mark this line on opposite sides for secondary placements. Remove Frame and Finish Angles for assembly prep. Bond the Finish Angle Rings as shown above aligning the marking. If no Grade Ring exist then bond either by using Secure n Seal or Grout n Patch to the structure prior to installing the Finish Angle assembly. Place the Finish Angle assembly on top of the structure or Grade Ring. Align the marking lines. Install Secure n Seal to top surface of Finish Angle assembly. Place Frame on top of the Finish Angle assembly again aligning to the marking.

Catch Basin & Custom Elevation Unit Installation
Methodology: UGT elevation methodology for the installation of catch basin or custom product is very simple. All square, rectangle or custom elevation units are flat with no interlock. Due to the bonding power of UGT’s Secure n Seal, all elevation units are constructed using this product.
Installation: The below graphics indicates how easy it is to install the UGT system. There are two sets of instruction; one is for the straight up installation and the second is for a site that requires an offset.
STRAIGHT INSTALLATION
OFFSET INSTALLATION
The nails, although not required, are only used for holding the elevation units in place until the Secure n Seal has a chance to achieve firm adhesion.

INI Proofing:
Overview: To stop inflow and infiltration into a chimney section, UGT’s Veil Safe is simple and ideal in accomplishing this task. Veil Safe is a two part polyurea coating that is simply applied by pouring on the flange of the frame and letting the liquid flow down the side of the chimney. As Veil Safe flows down the vertical wall, the polymer will fill all seams and create a coating that bridges the bottom elevation course and the structure. Once Veil Safe has been applied, it will take about 7-15 minutes to become tack free resulting in a hard shell on the exterior of the cone. The installers can then backfill the site within the hour.

Installation: Prior to step 1, all gaps where the first elevation unit meets the cone or top layer should be patched or filled described in cone preparation section of the manual. The liquid polymer will need bridge to adhere to. For best results, chimney should be exposed 1.5 to 2.0 inches below stacking surface for additional adhesion. Wire brush exposed chimney. TIP: make sure there is a clean path around the chimney. The person performing step 4 and 5 will have room to navigate and work. Mixing time will vary based on humidity and temperature. The mixture will take about 2 to 4 minutes to become the viscosity of a heavy latex paint. The can will become warm on the bottom. That is the indicator that the mixture is ready for pouring. TIP: When pouring, evenly distribute the mixture around the perimeter prior to rolling. A good practice is to distribute a little at a time and repeat around the frame a couple of times adjusting the amount in each area the 2nd time around. Pull down material with a roller or a brush from the frame ledge and cover chimney section until orange is not visible. Veil Safe will run down the exposed structure and onto the earth. Veil Safe is not toxic to the environment. TIP: if areas were not covered in the initial application, UGT’s crack n seal and/or secure n seal can be used for touch up. If the frame has bolt down holes, (not being used) be sure they don’t line up with the 40 series ring holes or plug using Secure n Seal. This will stop the inflow down the middle of the elevation units.

Pour can A into can B. Hand stir A and B mixture for about 2-4 minutes depending on applicator’s requirement for viscosity.
Pour mixture around the top edge of frame. Let mixture drip down the sides. of chimney structure.
Check and fix non-covered areas. Back fill when the coating has hardened.
Roll and spread mixture around the chimney structure overlapping the cone.

Structure Protection:
Overview To protect a structure from the concrete decay caused from the exposure of H2S and H2SO4 (hydro sulfuric acid). Most structures are now being spray with onsite with high pressure polyurea based material or the precast concrete is impregnated with a counter agent. For pre-existing structures, contractors have to wait for applicators to bring equipment to the site and apply prior to them finishing the rehabilitation. UGT’s H2S Safe is an epoxy based product that is impervious to hydro sulfuric acid and other chemicals for which a structure is exposed to. H2S Safe can be hand applied with a trowel, brush or roller, its low sag characteristics allow application to coat vertical services without the coating falling to the bottom of the chimney. H2S Safe and the use of VF30 primer will provide extreme adhesion.
Installation For installation it is suggested to have a drill, jiffy mixer attachment and disposable roller. The below instruction include the priming step of VF30, sold separately. All of the contents for H2S Safe come inside the 5 gallon pail.
Tip: The first press coat is applied by taking roller and pressing H2S Safe into all natural precast pitting.

Using protective gloves and safety goggles, open Vf30 and pour each component so there will be a 1:1 mixture. Combine and stir until there is even consistency
STEP 3Using a small disposable roller, dip into mixture of step two. Apply to surface evenly. This step is the priming coat for enhanced adhesion.
Clean structure thoroughly from all agents, grease or film that would inhibit adhesion of H2S Safe.
With a drill and jiffy mixer extension, mix product for about 4 to 6 minutes
STEP 6Using a small disposable roller, trowel or paint brush, apply a thin coat first and press into surface to eliminate air from the porous surface. Then apply a finishing coat to smooth. Leave to dry at 6 to 8 hours.
Squeeze out contents from both supplied bags into the 5 gallon pail. Tip: slit the top of the bag and roll bag from bottom to squeeze and empty contents.

Backfilling: Backfill methodology is important for the life of the chimney structure no matter what material is used in the elevation. After backfilling, hand tamping a traffic exposed structure will usually end in failure because all components of the structure become moving parts. The components will then be exposed to dynamic forces for which they are not meant to withstand. Each municipality has their own specifications so it is not UGT’s intent to override the requirements, but to bring to focus to the importance of this phase of the work.
