UCDVO is a registered charity and was established in 2003 in response to an expressed desire among students to engage in voluntary work overseas. UCDVO runs a year-long Volunteering & Development Education Programme which includes 4 weeks volunteering overseas with local partners in India, Tanzania and Uganda. UCDVO’s Development Education Programme works to ensure that participants are responsible, responsive and ethical in their approach to international volunteering, while also opening up opportunities for those with an interest in development issues from a local and global perspective.

UCDVO welcomes the UCD and wider community to participate in the 8th UCDVO Development Film Series from the 27th January to the 24th February. For 5 consecutive Mondays, the Film Series will screen award-winning, international documentaries on global justice and equality issues followed by a guest speaker. The Film Series continues to be a highly valued part of UCDVO’s Development Education Programme and is funded by Trocáire and Concern Worldwide.

Gaza: Preparing for Dawn by Donald Macintyre

Garry studied film at the London College of Communication and at the Irish National Film School. After graduating in 1992, he worked as a DOP in New York and London, before finally settling in Ireland, where he has been a documentary filmmaker for the last 25 years. In that time Garry has directed over 100 hours of TV documentaries for European and American broadcasters in over 20 countries worldwide. In 2011 he set up Real Films and since then Keane’s documentaries have been nominated for 11 Irish Film & Television Academy Awards; of these, his films have won four, including two in the “Best Director TV” category in 2013 and 2018.

Mary has worked since the 1970s in the delivery, design and management of services for groups who are socially disadvantaged including children, single parent families, migrants, people who are homeless or in housing distress and survivors of institutional abuse in voluntary and statutory organisations. She has worked on campaigns for the abolition of illegitimacy, improvement of welfare rights and the rights of tenants, and the right to housing. She worked as Director of Threshold, and was founding Director of the Homeless Initiative, the Homeless Agency and Caranua. She currently works as an independent management and social policy consultant.

For Sama is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. The film is the first feature documentary by Emmy award-winning filmmakers, Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts.

Aaron Bailey is a resident in Cloughjordan Ecovillage, and has been living there since construction began 10 years ago. He works regularly with Cultivate, a sustainability co-operative based in the Ecovillage, that host trainings and events in community resilience, sustainable living and permaculture design. Aaron has been very involved with Extinction Rebellion to passionately ring the alarm bell for transformative change. Cloughjordan Ecovillage, Tipperary, aims to showcase one model of what the change can look like, living intentionally in community: including over 50 eco-homes with community woodlands, renewable energy, a community amphitheatre, wood-fired bakery, research gardens & a community farm.

The Biggest Little Farm chronicles the eight-year quest of John and Molly Chester as they trade city living for 200 acres of barren farmland and a dream to harvest in harmony with nature. Through dogged perseverance and embracing the opportunity provided by nature’s conflicts, the Chester’s unlock and uncover a biodiverse design for living that exists far beyond their farm, its seasons, and our wildest imagination.

Climate Generation: Awakening to Our Children’s Future by Lorna Gold

In 2018, Jane walked 1,000km from Italy to the UN Climate Summit (COP24) in Poland as part of The Climate Pilgrimage. Jane has a keen interest in Theology, Spirituality and Social Justice and in recent years her focus has moved to the climate crisis and how faith communities can respond. Jane has a lot of experience of overseas volunteering, mostly in India, and now works for Trócaire on a climate justice project called “Laudato Si - Care for Our Common Home. Since December 2018, Jane has been involved with the weekly Fridays For Future protests outside Dail Eireann encouraging intergenerational groups to get involved.

Slater Jewell-Kemker was 15 when she began documenting the untold stories of youth on the front lines of climate change refusing to let their futures slip away. Over the course of 12 years and set against stunning visuals of a planet in crisis, Youth Unstoppable follows the evolution of a diverse network of youth rising up to shape the world they will live in.
