    Introduction

This gives details of all known factories in the region using information from a variety of sources. Thebasic structure uses information from the Global Tire Report published annually by CrainCommunications (Tire Business, Rubber and Plastic News, European Rubber Journal) but this hasbeen added to by information from trade magazines, press releases and websites of the individualcompanies.

The information is arranged by the countries in the region in alphabetical order. For each country thecompanies are treated alphabetically under four separate headings:

Employees! ! ! As given by the company but subject to frequent change.

Location! ! ! Where details are given this is usually the province or state in which the! ! ! ! plant is located. This can be found on the map.! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

    Tire types manufactured! Self explanatory.

Plant capacity ! ! The capacity is shown in the same format as the response given to the! ! ! ! Global Tire Report questionnaire. However, in order to make comparison

! ! ! ! easier, this has been converted where necessary into either units or! ! ! ! tonnes per year. These editorial calculations are shown in brackets. Where! ! ! ! a daily capacity is given we have assumed 350 working days in a year for! ! ! ! the purposes of our calculation.

! In early 2010 Bridgestone announced that it was investing $36.7m to add capacity for radialtruck and bus tires. The new production should come on stream in the first half of 2011, gearing up tofull capacity of 400 units a day by the second half of 2012. The project will create about 190 jobs ontop of the 970-current employees. It will require expanding the size of the plant, which stands at 7.1million square feet.

! In addition, the company has decided to build a new plant at Chakan, near Pune, Maharashtra,at a cost of $540m. PSR (passenger car radial) production is scheduled to begin in January 2013 andTBR production (truck and bus radial) is scheduled to begin the following August. By the end of 2020,

production capacity is expected to reach approximately 10,000 units per day for PSR and 3,000 unitsper day for TBR. Bridgestone has secured a 190 acre plot in Pune, about 170 kms south east ofMumbai.

Additional notes! Michelin has been interested in manufacturing in India for several years but only formallyannounced its plans in November 2009, after it had arranged to sell its minority 10% holding in ApolloTyres. Only outline details have been released, probably because plans are still flexible. However, rumours and speculation had been published in the Indian press for two years before that.Development will be in several phases with the first phase entering production in 2012 and reachingcompletion in 2016. Investment will be about $1 billion over 10 years and a total 1127 acres has beensecured for the plant although only 290 acres will be built on initially.

The company also owns 103 acres of land at Rajangaon, near Pune, Maharashtra. There has beenspeculation in the local press that this land could be used for a second facility in India to make cartires. Michelin has refused to confirm this but, in any case, it is unlikely to commission a secondfactory before the first has opened.

! MRF! http://www.mrftyres.com/! MRF, the largest Indian tire manufacturer, also has the largest number of plants, all located inSouth India. In early 2010 the company announced an expansion ambition which would cost 30billion rupees, to be spent over an undefined period. Of this, about one third would be spent onexpanding radial tire capacity at the existing factories and the remaining two thirds would be spent onbuilding two new greenfield factories; one in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu and the other at an existing plant atMedak, Andhra Pradesh. Balkrishna Tyres has changed from being a manufacturer of scooter tires to a specialist in off-highway tires for agricultural and construction use. It moved into this area at the same time as the tiremajors were moving out because production volumes were too small and too labour-intensive.
