“When I started getting better, I realisedwhat she had done for me, and I thank herevery day for her love.”This love led Sharon to look at some way

of repaying her daughter, or getting somerecognition for her discipline in education.“I came across thewebsite of SAILI, an or-

ganisation that links academically talentedstudents with quality schools, and knewthat this was the way forward for her.“They concentrate on learners who show

an aptitude for maths and science whereSalithea always does well, and thankfullyshe has got the bursary after all the screen-ing processes.”

ModestThe young hero is modest about her

achievements, saying that her mother hadalways cared for her, so it was only rightthat she could do the samewhenhermotherneeded it.“We must always appreciate what our

mothers do for us, and when they need ourhelp we must be there for them,” she says.

Salithea is also very excited about goingto a high school that will focus on her abili-ties in maths and science.“At themomentwe have two choices near

us – Parow and The Settlers – and we havebeen invited to open days.“So I have yet to make up my mind,” she

thankful of the support that Greenlandsstaff have given her.

Support“The teachers have always supported us

and learners must appreciate how muchthey do to educate us.“I love maths and science, but I also love

reading a lot,” she says.“Books take me to so many places of my

dreams.”Here’s a warning to the world, watch out

for this young lady who won’t be beaten byany obstacle in her way.She wants to study business science, but

Abraham Fortuin, toedertien jaar oud, moes toe as sekretarisdien.

graafplaas in ’n gesamentlike graf herbe-grawe.”Die genootskap is ’n Christelike organisa-

With sexual assault on children in thespotlight in recent weeks, police in BishopLavis have been making sure perpetratorsin this community are ending up behindbars.

In two incidents that happened duringlast year, two members of their FCS Unitsecured life sentences for the guilty par-ties, and are assuring the public that nostone will be left unturned when it comesto protecting children.

In the first incident the accused,Michael Juta (54), was found guilty of rapein December and faces a life sentence forthe crime.

This case relates to a 7-year-old from Ka-lksteenfontein who reported that she wasraped on two occasions in her aunt’shouse.

On one occasion the aunt caught theperpetrator in the act.

Intensive investigation by Warrant Of-ficer Shaun Taylor led to the successfulconviction.

After another trial that ended in Decem-

ber, Nyameko Phakamile (33), from theJoe Slovo informal settlement, is also fac-ing a life behind bars for his actions.

Two 12-year-olds were asleep in a dwell-ing in the area when he entered the roomand forced them to perform sexual actswith him. They ran away.

He was arrested shortly afterwards.

Family membersAnother family member of victims will

also be behind bars for life in an incidentthat occurred in March last year.

Two girls, aged 9 and 10, went to visitone of their uncles, where he raped bothof them twice.

Derrick Johannes (56) was found guiltyin the Parow Regional Court and will beserving four life sentences for thesecrimes.

A further case from 2012 involved a 10-year-old girl who was taking a bath in herhome in Langa.

Her mother’s boyfriend came into thebathroom and ordered her to get out andforced her into a bedroom where he rapedher.

The child reported the incident to her

mother, who opened the case against theboyfriend.

During August last year ThandikhayaSajini (34) was found guilty of rape in theParow Regional Court and sentenced to 17years in prison.

In addition he was found unfit to possessa firearm, unfit to work with children andhis name was entered into the NationalRegister for sexual offenders.

Another success for police in this arearelates to a stabbing incident that hap-pened in 2009.

Johan Fortuin the 30-year-old accusedfrom Linda Street, Valhalla Park, was in-volved in an argument with Marco Hen-dricks (24) of Joan Street.

During the altercation Hendricks ranaway from Fortuin, who gave chase. Hen-dricks was eventually caught in JuliaStreet and stabbed several times.

The victim eventually died from hiswounds and Fortuin was arrested shortlythereafter.

During January this year he was sen-tenced to 15 years in prison after success-ful investigation and evidence was led byDetective Sergeant Jerome Kleinbooi.

City Health is looking at new and in-novative ways to reduce the spread ofTB.

Authorities are serious about fight-ing this disease as they start imple-menting strategies that will includeshortening the waiting period for re-sults and access to treatment.

In 2013, 72 % of patients at city clin-ics were started on treatment withinfive days and City Health is lookingto increase this figure to 85 %, thusreducing the spread of this airbornedisease.

Existing strategies have alreadyseen a steady reduction in the inci-dence of tuberculosis (TB) with re-ported figures having decreased from877/100 000 in 2009 to 705/100 000 in2012. This drop is particularly im-pressive in the light of the concomi-tant HIV epidemic.

“The high prevalence of HIV,which weakens the immune systemof people infected, has been fuellingthe TB epidemic,”said the city’s may-oral committee member for health,Lungiswa James.

“To make matters worse, TB ismore difficult to diagnose in HIV in-fected people.”

The World Health Organisation(WHO) promoted the GeneXpert testin 2010, the first new TB diagnostictest in the last 125 years.

South Africa was the first countryin the world to immediately roll outthe new test for all people who pre-sented with TB symptoms.

QuickerRecently this new diagnostic test

was added at all state laboratories. This test is not onlymore sensitive indiagnosing TB, but it also indicateswhether the TB is resistant to Ri-fampicin,whichwill immediately seethe patient being started on an alter-nate TB regimen.

The laboratory processes the Gen-eXpert test within two to six hours sopatients can receive their TB test re-sults the next day.

Previously, the smear test used forTB diagnosis failed to detect the dis-ease in about one out of three peopleand a follow-up sputum culture hadto be requested, taking up to sixweeks for the laboratory to produceresults.

Once TB treatment is started, pa-tients arequickly renderednon-infec-tious. Therefore, by shortening thewaiting time for making the diagno-sis, patients are able to start treat-ment a lot sooner and this significant-ly reduces the spread of this disease.

Another grisly discovery in Delft on Satur-day night has the community horrified atthe spate of attacks on children when thelifeless body of a 12-year-old was found ina shack.Police were called out to an address in

Cheesewood Street, Delft South at about21:38. Theywere told the communitywas as-saulting a man. When they got there they found the 26-

year-old man, injured, and prevented anyfurther attacks on him.Further investigation then led them to the

structure at the back of the house where thebody of the child was found on a bed in theroom that was covered in blood amidst bro-ken glass.

The man who was attacked told policethat he had no knowledge of the incident, saying that he gave the key of the dwellingto an unknown male.Police are investigating a charge of mur-

der and most probably that of rape, as thegirl was found naked from the waist down.An initial assessment indicates that the

child might have suffocated when an objectwas forced in her mouth.Police will detain the injured suspect un-

til they receive clarity on his whereaboutsduring the crime and upon receiving validconfirmation of his non-involvement in thechild’s murder.Hewas treatedon the sceneand transport-

While the population in the province hasclimbed withmore than amillion peoplein the last sevenyears, thenumberof lawenforcers has dropped by 88 %.Despite the shortage of police officers

and paid reservists in the Western Capebeing well-documented, the situation islikely only going to improve in twoyears’ time. “We need action now,” saysDan Plato, provincial MEC of communi-ty safety. Last week he requested theminister of police, Nathi Mthethwa, totake immediate action to address short-ages in the police force in the province. He has urged Mthethwa to call up ex-

isting police reservists – of which thereare about 20 000 – in order to capacitatethe provincial police under the com-mand of General Arno Lamoer.“Our provincial police cannot do their

core duties without sufficient resourc-

es,” Plato says. He also suggests that the920 surplus police members in the FreeState be redeployed to theWestern Cape. The national police to population ratio

is one police officer for every 336 people. This number pales in comparisonwith

an area such as Kraaifontein, where theofficial number is quoted as one officerfor every 1 630 people. There are 128 out of 150 stations in the

province that are understaffed.“If one looks at the recent crime statis-

tics it is clear that under-resourcing isnegatively affecting crime in this prov-ince,” adds Plato. The correlation be-tween the number of police recruits andattempted murder is startling. In 2008 about 1 500 newmembers were

recruited and that year there were 1 776cases of attempted murder.By 2010 about 800 new members were

recruited and 2 100 cases investigated; in2012 about 250 members were recruitedand 3 280 cases investigated.

Learners at Webner Street Primary Schoolin Uitsig are becoming more than pawns inthe game of life, as they discover a passionfor chess.

This school has already produced twochampions in their field as Vernon Philan-der – who needs no introduction to cricketfans – and Justin Geduld from the Blitz-bokke spent their formative years here, butnow they’re ready to produce some chess

champions.Since the middle of last year the bug has

been biting learners when the school be-came part of a programme by the Depart-ment of Culture and Sport to focus on chess.

“Its been an exciting time,” says GrantAdams, the chess coach at the school.

“The learners taking part in the sporthave shown that there is so much potentialthat has not been tapped into.

“Most of them did not even know aboutthe game before we started, but in that shorttime they have taken part in local tourna-

ments and shown that we are a force to bereckoned with.

“In our last tournament in MitchellsPlain one of our learners was second in hisage group and one of our youngest memberscame out tops, even after joining the pro-gramme much later.”

Grant also feels that the learners are dis-covering benefits beyond the sport that areempowering them.

“For me it’s more than the game, it’s valu-able life skills that will help them through-out their lives,” he continues.

“They learn the power of concentrationand discipline which then goes on to helpthem with their studies. Most importantly,it gives them an insight that through hardwork they can achieve beyond whatever cir-cumstances they come from.

“There are so many negative influencessurrounding them here in Uitsig, butthrough chess they are learning to relate toeach other as friends who share a passionfor the sport.”

With their recent successes Grant pointsout that more learners want to learn thegame.

“We have grown to 100 learners takingpart, but I don’t mind,” he says with a broadgrin.

“If it can make a difference in their lives, for the rest of their lives, I’ll be happy.”

Principal John Aspeling is also excitedabout the programme.

“I did not know what to think when theystarted,” he confesses.

“But then I started seeing the changes inthe learners and have been behind it 100 %.It shows you what our children are capableof if given the right opportunities.”

For this year Grant has now also regis-tered the school as a club for them to get in-volved in more competitions.

“Our players have shown that they havewhat it takes in just a short time. Watch outfor them with more competition.”

nou vrugte afwerp.“Ons begin nou druk uitoefen,” sê James

gevra:TB: Ons lesers kon enige Suid-Afrikaanse

bute to the Poets, bekend te stel.

AjaxCapeTownclaimed their firstAbsaPremiership win of 2014 when theybeat a 10-man Bidvest Wits side at the

Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening. The Urban Warriors were slightly lucky

towalk awaywith all three points, after theywere pressed back for the majority of thegame despite having a one man advantage. The students put out a valiant display and

dominated a large portion of possession asthey fell to a fifth minute goal by Carl Larkwhich proved to be decisive to putAjaxCapeTown on the brink of eighth place.A chance fell immediately for the home

side when Lark was sent a ball on the rightflank. He burst into the box and got the bet-ter of hismarker, only to see his shot scuffedwide of the post. But it tookLark only until the fifthminute

for him to break the deadlock. MatthewBooth failed to clear a first time ball whichfell to Nathan Paulse, who then pulled itback to the new signing as he fired it intothe back of the net.It was nearly 1-1 when Onismor Bhasera

sawhis attempt loop towards goal. But itwasthe home team goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola

who made made a last ditch save with hisfinger tips to keep his side lead intact after34 minutes of play.Wits were having the lion’s share of the

possessionbut fell victim to someheatedmo-ments which saw Dankwae Kofi sent off onthe brink of half time. The midfielder wasfound guilty of a nasty elbow on AbbubakerMobara which saw him dismissed instantlyby referee Robert Smith.Midway through the half Booth was per-

haps guilty of wasting a good opportunitywhen a corner kick was floated into the boxand over his team mate Papy Faty. The set-piece met his head but the former

Ajax Cape Town defender could only see hiseffort bounce to the ground and turn wideof the post.Asive Langwe was brought on after the

break in place of Matthew Pattison, beforeJaakkola was again at full stretch to beataway another Wits corner at the near post.Bhasera came agonisingly close to puttinghis side on level termswith a powerful snap-shot from outside the box which saw theAjax Cape Town goalkeeper push it wide.Ajax CT did enough to sustain Wits’ pres-

sure as they claimed the three points tomove on the brink of a top eight place.
