“Fransie van Zyl road is named after afarmer from here who was originallyknown as Fransie van Tegt, so there is a his-tory from here that played a part in the gen-eral history of the Cape.”Former Elsies River High principal Gil-

bert Thomas also spoke with passion aboutthe rich heritage of the area.“Many powerful people have come from

this area and are making their mark in theworld today,” he said.“Doctors, lawyers, academics, professors,

sportstars and musicians like Robbie Jan-sen all had their roots here and never letpoverty ornegative influences get the betterof them.“Knowing thisheritage canplayabigpart

in teaching our youth that they must lookbeyond their circumstances to rise up justlike so many of them did before.”

One of the colourful characters who is al-so part of the history of the area, is DannyBrown, a top sportsman in his youth, whocan still regale people with the tales of someof the best who came from the area.“This area has a rich tradition in sport.

We had a community that produced thebest. I was one of those top athletes and asoccer player as well, with a communitythat supported the talent that was aroundthem.“I still have the blazers and badges to

prove it,” he said with a smile as he endedhis speechwith a song.Everybody joined in.Senior librarian Julian Schreuder added

that the librarywas very happy to be associ-ated with the project.“We are proud to be part of this pro-

gramme and hope it grows,” he said.“Sooftenweareaskedabouthistoryof the

area, but we don’t have the resources. Thatwill now, through the society, be availablefor the learners who want to do projectsabout the area.”Ursula Reynolds concluded by requesting

that people come forward with their histo-ries, photos or artifacts and documents forpreservation.“We are also looking for verbal historic

tales and will send somebody to visit you torecord those histories and stories.“We are appealing to all residents and

former residents to come forward withthose stories; it’s important to make a newgeneration aware of the importance of thatheritage.“Knowing your history can play a part for

the future of this area,” she said.V For more information about the society contactUrsula on 082 694 2040 or Nadene on 083 962 7573.

The Riverton Estate Residents’ Asso-ciation is mobilising ahead of theirgeneral meeting.

Chairperson Steve Ross is calling onresidents to attendbecause thereare someimportant matters coming up for discus-sion.“Itwill be held onMonday 28 September

from 19:00 at the Robin Hood Crèche inWarner Crescent,” he said.“We invite all residents to attend and

hear what is on the cards for our commu-nity as well as to raise issues that may beof concern to you.”He also pointed out that the ward coun-

cillor and police will also attend the meet-ing.

Best solutions to be found“People can forward all their concerns

relating to them tome so that I can informthem before the meeting,” he said.“This will ensure that you leave the

meeting with the best solution and an-swer to your concerns.”Ross also wanted to give clarity on the

role of the neighbourhood watch in thecommunity.“I have been privileged to give motiva-

tional talks to neighbourhood watch(NHW) teams in other communities in re-cent months.” he says.

Lack of understanding“It is sad that only a small percentage

of residents in all communities under-stand how the watch operates. NHWteams are not security companies, thathave signed contracts, service agree-ments or salaries from the residents.“They are volunteers, from among the

community in which they reside and whofreely offer their time to patrol their com-munities. They are students, workers, pensioners andothers,whoaremostlyun-appreciated for their sacrifice, as they areaccused of not being everywhere all thetime.“These accusations and negativity have

seen many teams dwindle in size or eventotally dissolve in many communities.“However, inRivertonwe encourage all

residents to watch over our neighbour-hood and alert the rest of the communityregarding any suspicious activity via ourWhatsapp alert groups,” said Ross.

Door to door visitsRoss added while their patrol teammay

only be 23 persons currently, their observ-ers are in the hundreds, “watching over22 streets with more corners than thenumber on the NHW team.”He also pointed out that along with sec-

retary Glenda Cupido and watch coordi-nator Ismail Ely theywould be doing doorto door visits in the area to update theirrecords. “We hope that you will allow usin and share your opinions and concernsregarding happenings in our neighbour-hood. Lets keep theunity thatwehave cre-ated thus far, by continuing to encourageand support each other.”V For more information contact Steve Ross on 081389 8026.

Important issues on the agenda Poor pension forceselderly to the streetsPensioners will be taking to thestreets of Cape Town on Tuesday 29September to protest on poor pay-outs.They are taking part in this march

to let the department of socialservices know that they cannot liveon a pension of R1 400 per month andneed an increase in order to survive. The march will be starting at noon

from the Company Gardens andparticipants are advised to wearcomfortable shoes.V Further information from David Le Rouxon 084 315 1674 or Noor on 078 170 7835.

Many miles to his bookGARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

The journey from a backyard shack inHanover Park to positive empower-ment starts with that first mile you

walk to your dreams. That is the story in Many Miles – a Life

Story by Bellville resident Ivan Koopmanwho launched his debut book at the Hugue-not Library in Belhar recently.Currently a life skills and youth develop-

ment facilitator for a programme at Learn-ing Cape Initiative, Koopman’s journeystarted when he had to leave school at 14 towork as a tea boy and general cleaner at thePostOffice to eventually becoming themedi-cal manager at a major construction site inDubai.“Leaving school at that age was heart-

breaking,” he said at the launch.“But, it had to be done for the survival of

our family and I somehow knew that itwould not be the end for me because I had

faith in God’s plans for me.“I walked barefoot along the main road to

Cape Town going into shops to ask for workbecause it was needed. People thought I wasjoking, but I had to do it.”Koopman added that while the book was

a celebration of his triumph, he also wantedit to be an inspiration to people who mayhave come from similar situations, or whomay still be in such situations, to never giveup on their dreams.“You must always believe that through

God’s love for you there is a positive planfor you and you must believe in that planfor you.“This book is also there to motivate our

youth who are in situations where they aresurrounded by so much negativity. The an-swer to your empowerment is there, but youmust be prepared to do the ground work –the hard work – and have the patience toknow that the end result is going to be yourultimate victory.”V Contact Ivan on 083 777 6580.

The baby boom among teenagers hasdropped, and authorities arepleased with these latest statistics.

According to statistics, released by theCity of Cape Town’s health department, there were 3 316 babies born to mothersaged 18 or younger in Cape Town in 2013,which accounted for 4,4% of all births re-corded for that year. The data for 2014 shows that 2 936, or

4,2%, of babies born fell within this cate-gory. This means that the teen pregnan-cy rate in Cape Town has slowed from5,3% in 2006 to 4,2% in 2014.“This is good news and bears testa-

ment to the availability of contraceptionand education offered by a range of gov-ernmental and non- governmental part-ners,” said the City’s Mayco member forhealth, Siyabulela Mamkeli.

“I also believe it is proof that youngpeople are takingmore responsibility fortheir sexual and reproductive health, something that we have been highlight-ing formanyyears nowandwhich is alsoa key theme for World ContraceptionDay later this week.”

Pregnancy ‘wanted’World Contraception Day is held on

Sunday 26 September. The vision of thisannual worldwide campaign is to ensurethat every pregnancy is a wanted preg-nancy.

This is achieved through awarenessdrives so that young people canmake in-formedchoices about their sexual and re-productive health.

The health department offers a rangeof contraceptives at its clinics across thecity, including oral contraception, in-

jectable contraception, intra-uterine de-vices, Implanon, sterilisation and con-doms. Petogen, which is a three-monthinjection, is the most popular contracep-tive at City clinics. The health department has noticed an

increase in the uptake of reproductivehealth services in the last financial year.

Better servicesThis can be attributed to the wide

range of options available to clients, butalso the introduction of “fast lanes” forfamily planning clients at some clinics.Their visits are managed via an ap-

pointment system which reduces wait-ing times.Where this service is not available,

waiting times have the potential to influ-encewhether clients return for follow-upvisits.Another challenge is empowering

women so that they can negotiate birthspacing with their partners and involvetheir partners in decisions around fami-ly planning. At a workshop in May, the health de-

partment devised additional interven-tions to broaden its reach in the 12 to 18age group. This includes partnering with schools

and other City departments for educa-tion and awareness programmes, fast-tracking young people attending clinicsfor reproductive health reasons usingqueue marshals, increasing the availa-bility of educational materials, estab-lishing a Prevention of Teen PregnancyForum to monitor trends and highlightconcerns or challenges, and investigat-ing the provision of more youth clinics.

When it comes to vocal harmonyTrack Five is known throughoutSouth Africa for making magical

music.Their vocal harmony is now on the verge

of taking them onto the international stageto be part of the South African team to rep-resent the country in America.

They have been performing all over CapeTown singing A Cappella, as well as withjazz quartets and bands for the last 20 years, and have recently teamed upwith Saxit andthe Ramon Alexander Trio.

Founder Gavin Fullard explained thatthis latest initiative came about at the be-ginning of September when they decided toenter a local talent competition.

“For a bit of fun we decided to enter theTalent Africa competition,” he says.

“On Saturday 5 September we took partin the open vocal category, singing Shiny

Stockings in the Western Cape Regionalround and amazingly achieved 99 percent, sharing the overall first place.”

There were approximately 120 entries infive categories that included actors, danc-ers, instrumentalists, models and vocalists.

He added that the national finals will beheld at theBellvilleCivic inApril next year.

“If we make it into Team South Africa wewill be off toNewYorkduringJuly that yearto take part in the Talent America event.

“We are very confident of our performan-ces and if we make it into the team, we willhave to finance our own way there, but it’sa hurdle that wewill overcomewhenwe getthere.

“However, if there are sponsors out therewho want to lend a hand, we welcome theirinterest.”

Bouwerkstaan noustil nádiefstalBRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

Volgens Jason Keating, algemene be-stuurder by RoadSmart, is die diefstal vandie toerusting ’n reuse-terugslag.

Siyabonga Dyakophu by 021 5971760 bel.

Só lyk die toerusting wat gesteel is.

Firsttime action for new KillarneyADRIAN PHEIFFER

What is effectively an all-new motorracing circuit in the Western Capeis going to see action for the first

time on Saturday 26 September. The eighth roundof the excitingWingfield

Motors sponsored Power Series then takesplace in an anti-clockwise (reverse) direc-tion at the new circuit.Although drivers and riderswill be travel-

ling around the same track with every cor-ner having a variable radius, the angles andspeed will have to be worked out anew andcommitted to memory. Some will be slower, while othersmay surprisingly be faster thanbefore. Of course, braking distances are go-ing to be another variable factor. This may

be to the advantage of those who have hadexperience on other South African circuits, and especially to the few who have racedoverseas. This especially applies to drivers like

Steve Humble who has featured prominent-ly in sports car events onavariety of circuitsin Britain. And to a lesser extent to Bloub-erg’s Craig Jarvis, providing his hugelypowerfulV10DodgeViperhashad its venomsac replenished. Jarvis has recently compet-ed in Europe in a Porsche GT3, while the Vi-per was in devastating form in East Londonearlier this season. As far as the top bikers are concerned, it

is going to be interesting to see how quicklythe talented Dave McFadden, who is thisweek still competing in the 2015World Super

Stock Championship, is able to come toterms with the new layout.Meanwhile a tremendous amount of work

has gone into ensuring the safety of the trackin its new format, and the organisers arewell satisfied with their effort. Majorchanges include the repositioning and re-placement of many of the steel and tyre safe-ty barriers and the relocation of two of themarshal points.A chicane or artificial corner similar to

those at the famed Monza autodrome wherethe Italian Fq Grand Prix is held and effec-tively slow the overall pace of the F1 cars, has also been added. The Killarney chicane is on the main

straight at the approach to the banked CapeTown Corner bend where competitors will

have to flick right, then left and marginallyright again before swinging hard left intothe tight hairpin bend.Early tests indicate that while the track

maybemarginally quicker than the originalthat has been in operation since the early1960s, it promises to be even more exciting. The Killarney organisers are taking full

advantage of the coming long weekend thatbegins with the national Heritage Day pub-lic holiday to stage a giant vintage, veteranand classic car show on Thursday, Septem-ber 24.Although not classified as official entries,

the show is also going to host guest displaysof new cars as well as a selection of wacky, radical Mad Max type exhibits from the re-cent Afrikaburn Festival in the Karoo.
