The My African Dream initiative recent-ly celebrated its graduation, which hasopened doors to many hopefuls.
The graduates took part in the hairdress-ing programme, which was facilitated at theMulti-Purpose Centre in Eerste River.
It took place over a period of threemonths,and equipped eager individuals with the ba-sic, but useful hairdressing skills.
This will enable them to venture into theirown business.
The programme partnered with directorof transformation for Pick n Pay, SuzanneAckerman-Berman, who was present at thegraduation.
Small business“Passionate about encouraging small
businesses, Pick n Pay has always believedin being part of the community, by being loy-al and giving back through doing good,” saidSuzanne.
“I wish them success and with elementssuch as passion, integrity and humility theycan go far,” Suzanne added.
Eugenie Marcus, mentor to the 38 appli-cants who graduated praised her involve-ment in the programme as a constant learn-ing process.
“What I learned was how to equip otherswith skills and how to work with differentpersonalities. It taught me how vital teamwork is and that it is important to make thenext person feel good about themselves,”Eugenie said.
She describes learning how to work withone another as a highlight, which is whathairdressing is about.
The vibrant group of now qualified hair-stylists, enthusiastically gushed about thelife-altering journey which they eagerly em-braced.
“You don’t only learn how to blowdry hairbut how to look after it as well,” EdwinaMentoor (31) said.
Facilitator Colvin Snell praised the groupfrom Eerste River as the largest out of allwhich they have had since the programmewas launchestarted two years ago.
“There is still so much we can do, if wereflect on how far we have come and grownto the level of professionals,” said Colvin.
The Eerste River leg of the programmewas the first of its kind, in which the My Af-rican Dream went off-site.
Although98applicantswere registered forthe programme, 44 were successful of which38 received certificates and mini starter kitsat the graduation. This will enable them tostart generating an income for themselves.
Success“Groups usually start big and even the
drop-out rate is high but the Eerste rivergroup surprised us. The drop-out rate wasnot even 10 %,” Colvin said.
Carlo Kordom (20), from Blackheathshared his success since his involvement inthe programme.
“I sat at home for a year, with no incomein an unstable financial state. Since the pro-gramme I feel so glad that I am a step aheadin hoping to further my studies.
“I learned that hairdressing is not justabout picking up a blowdryer, I developeda passion for it,” said Carlo.
He hopes to obtain two years’ experiencewhich will eventually allow him to work onhis own.

Getting the feel of a business environmentand equipping you with the right set ofskills is the exact vision Jody van Heerdenhas for the unskilled youth.The CAD4all Academy, is a community-
based learning programme aimed at under-privileged youth.CAD stands for Computer Aided Design
programme.Jody is set on achieving and giving quali-
ty training to communities like Kuils Riverand Eerste River where the underprivi-leged are relegated to menial jobs such asplumbing and gardening.“I saw a need in the northern suburbs for
parents to send their children for tertiarytraining,” said Jody.He started the academy years ago after at-
tending an event, together with his wife Li-sa, at the Kuils River municipal chambers.Present were community leaders who
spoke about unresolved crime issues andthis in turn sparked his idea to give back.The academy is an NPO and is geared to-
wards helping the less fortunate be pre-pared for entering a professionalwork envi-ronment.This is meant to enable communities and
restore hope, prevent gangsterism, drugabuse and youth at risk slipping into a lifeof crime.Jody is a qualified architect and owns his
own company.
Youth at risk are taught life skills suchas money management, time managementand how to set-up a CV. Health and safetytraining is also included.“The children should be able to go into an
office knowing that they can generate an in-comeandnot comehome inanoverall everynight,” he said.Many parents who cannot afford tertiary
training for their children have no alterna-tive as the entry requirements arenot basedon level of education.Through devoting his life and time to a
passion for architecture, Jody has createda rather professional environment whichstudents will not experience elsewhere.“I don’t just want this to be a handout
quality,” he said.Partnerships with various other commu-
nity organisations are built.These organisations provide the candi-
dates who cannot afford tertiary trainingand are included for the programme.Grant Burgess, who is a product of the
programme, has “developed a passion andlove for computers” sincehe started thepro-gramme in 2010.“My knowledge has expanded and every-
onehas the opportunity to be part of the pro-gramme.“It has taught me something from start to
finish,” said Grant.“We hope to provide the youth with em-

The Kuils River Cluster consisting of theMfuleni police, Kleinvlei police and KuilsRiver police, executed several tracing andcrime-prevention operations from Monday,8 April at 00:00 until Sunday 14 April at15:00.
The operations successfully led to the ar-rest of over 400 suspects for charges relatingto murder, assault common, assault (GBH)grievous bodily harm, drunk driving, andpossession of dangerous weapons.
This included malicious damage to prop-erty, house break-ins and theft, possessionof prohibited firearms and ammunition,
dealing in liquor without a licence, dis-charging a firearm, crimen injuria, fraud,assaulting police and drugs.
Over 200 of 477 suspects were kept over-night and released on fines as they had com-mitted various crimes.
On Thursday, 11 April four suspects werearrested after a search was done at theirhouse in Kuils River. A police radio, batteryand a traffic radio and battery were found.They were charged with the possession ofsuspected stolen goods.
An ongoing investigation will be carriedout to establish how the suspects managed
to obtain the items and from where,amongst other things.
On the same day, another search was con-ducted in Kleinvlei where a firearm con-taining seven live rounds of ammunitionwas confiscated.
A 20-year-old female was arrested andcharged with possession of a prohibited fire-arm and illegal ammunition.
The execution of search warrants, stopand search and liquor operations also led tosuccessful confiscation of dagga, 64 sachetsof tik, 16 tablets of mandrax and 148 500 mlof liquor.
Police operations net 400 arrests
The Kuils River Cluster, which includes theMfuleni police, Kleinvlei police and KuilsRiver police, engaged in special operationsthat were conducted on Thursday 4 Apriland Sunday 7 April.
During these operations, vehicles werepulled over and searched for the possessionof dangerous weapons, drugs or any illegalsubstances. More than 30 people were arrest-ed for various offences.
Search warrants were also obtained andnumerous houses were searched, of which
more than 10 were in possession of drugs.Over 480 kg of dagga, four tik sachets and
14 mandrax tablets were found.Illegal ammunition was also found in one
of the houses, and a 26-year-old female wasarrested in Wesbank and a 20-year-old malearrested for possession of a prohibited fire-arm, also in Wesbank.V To report crime contact the Kleinvlei SAPS on021 902 8300, Mfuleni SAPS on 021 909 9500 andthe Kuils River SAPS on 021 900 2800.
More than 30 arrests in cluster ops
Apprenticeship programmes including fullbursaries are offered at the Wingfield Cam-pus of Northlink College in Goodwood. Thequalifications obtained in these apprentice-ships are globally sought after in the manu-facturing sector.

The TDM Powered Programme providesstudents with the core and specialist skills
in the tool, die and mould making disci-plines to enable them to qualify as toolmakerartisans.
Once qualified, the students can pursuecareers in cross-cutting sectors such as theaerospace, automotive, chemical, electron-ics, leisure, marine, medical, mining andpackaging industries.
The programme includes on-the-job train-ing which provides the students with exten-sive industry exposure and experience.

Die Stad Kaapstad is besig om sekere aspekte van die Verordening op Drankhandelsdae en-ure te hersien, spesifiek wat betref die implementering van handelsure asook ‘n Sondag-verbod op drankverkope vir buiteverbruik vanaf gelisensieerde persele (bv. winkels endrankwinkels) in liggingskategorie 3 tot 7 alleenlik.
Alle belanghebbendes wat voorleggings in hierdie verband wil doen, word aangemoedig omdit aan die Stad te stuur. Dit is belangrik om daarop te let daar GEENSINS beoog word omdie handelsure en handelsdae vir buiteverbruik in liggingskategorie 1 en 2 te hersien of uit tebrei nie.

Burnley Ladies’ Football club is becomingthe team to beat in the Women’s RegionalLeague of SAFA.
So far this season the senior team is stillunbeaten winning all six games, but they’vestill got their eyes set on growing the sportamong girls in the community.
So far this year their development teamhas had 18 new members join up and theynow have a team playing in the developmentdivision.
Their season started on Saturday 13 Apriland they play their matches on the Metropol-itan pitch in Bonteheuwel in the under-13boys’ division.
While interest in the sport is growingamong girls the club is at present still relianton sponsors and fundraisers to run the clubas well as pay travelling, gate and referees’fees each week.

Die Hoërskool Durbanville se eersterugbyspan het die nuwe skoleseisoendie afgelope Saterdag op ’n hoë noot in-
gelui met ’n indrukwekkende oorwinningoor die Hoërskool Strand.
Die Durbies het met verreweg die meestebalbesit die besoekers vir die grootste deelvan die wedstryd op hul agtervoete gehad enwelverdiend met 18-7 gewen.
Die eindtelling inStellenberg senederlaagvan 12-29 teen HTS Drostdy vertel gewis niedie volle waarheid nie. Die Stellies het aan-vanklik die botoon gevoer – dit was net ge-brekkige afronding wat verhoed het dat hul-le met die draaislag (12-12) nie ’n stewigevoorsprong gehad het nie.
