Verlede week was sy klaar gepak
die lied It’smy house, and I stay heredeur Diana Ross, opgeklink onderdie nuwe intrekkers.

Police hard at work
The community of Eerste River must be alertto the recent spike in housebreakings.
W/O Annacletta Mothaolo, communica-tions officer from the Kleinvlei police sayslast week alone they had 30 housebreakingsreported. “People must ensure their housesare locked and fitted with safety gates andburglar bars.”
Mothoalo said the community must helpeach other, by watching over their neigh-bours’ homes when they are not home.
“Talk to each other, if you are leaving yourhouse, when you maybe have a neighbourwho stays at home during the day, ask thisneighbour to keep an eye on your house. Alsowhen going on holiday get someone to look af-
ter your house,” said Mothoalo. She adds thecommunity must assist the police in fightingcrime. The Kleinvlei police give the followingadvice:
. Don’t leave your windows or doors openwhen you are not home.
. Don’t leave expensive or attractive itemslying around the garden, it will tempt thieves.
. Keep safety gates locked at all times.
. Install a burglar alarm.
.Close curtains properly at night, so crimi-nals do not see your valuable items.
. Do not leave your keys under themat, potplant or in the postbox.
. If your house has been burgled don’ttouch anything until fingerprints are taken.

Skakel kapt. WilliamDreyer hieroor by 082 469 2549 of 021 4678233.

No stone was left unturned in recentcrime operations held in Eerste River.
According to information provided by W/OAnnaclettaMothoalo, communications of-ficer of the Kleinvlei police the joint opera-tion, entitled, Operation Hlasela, (meaningto attack, in this case the criminals) was per-formed by members of the Kleinvlei police, law enforcement and metro police.
“We started by searching the schools, ar-rested those with outstanding warrants fortraffic fines and then visited spaza shops,”said Mothoalo.
Vehicle check points at strategic places inEerste River formed part of this operation, during which R51 250 in fines was issued tooffending motorists.
“We held roadblocks on our busiest roads,Bobsway and Forest Drive,” she said.
Mothoalo says the majority of these fineswere for driving without a licence.
After these roadblocks the team of officerstargeted local schools for crime preventionefforts and then the spaza shops. “Here wefound spaza shops that don’t have licencesto operate; six fines were issued to differentshop owners for failing to produce the cor-rect licensing documents.”
They came across someone who has beenoperating an illegal scrapyard on an openplot in a residential area. “He was fined andcharged,” Mothoalo explained.
Another local scrapyardwas also fined foroperating on a business premises, illegallyand for being in possession of stolen cablesand stolen City of Cape Town dustbins.
“They were charged and this scrapyardwill be monitored.”
People are urged to be on the lookout forthieves in possession of stolen blackwheeliebins and to report this to Kleinvlei police.
Crackdown on crimeAn unidentified man looks on as officers inspect the illegal scrapyard.
This spaza shop, operated by Somali nationals in Eerste River, was fined for operating withouta licence.

Daar is min honde wat mense se broekeso laat bewe soos boerboele. Daar was dusheelwat beweriges Sondag by Bothasig seHoërskool Bosmansdam toe sowat 70 vandié honde hul beste poot voorgesit het in’n boerboel-kompetisie.

Aspart of the city’s commitment to improv-ing communication, the launch of a newfunction on the SAP C3 fault reporting sys-tem has been introduced.
The launch of this function comes afterprevious occasions, when residents andbusinesses contacted the city call centre toreport a fault or log a service request, anda reference number was given telephoni-cally.
The lengthy number was often difficultto record if a resident was calling from ahands-free mobile device in their car or didnot have a pen and paper on hand.
Now, when customers contact the CallCentre (086 010 3089), they are given the op-tion of receiving the reference number via
SMS or email. This option makes it more convenient to
keep the reference number so that they canfollow up on outstanding service requests.
This is the first of a two-phase initiativewhich the City of Cape Town’s customer re-lations department completed successfullylast week. In the second phase, the city willsend a second SMS or email to the com-plainant when the request has been dealtwith and has been closed on the system.
“In order to keep Cape Town a well-runcity, it is important that service requestsand logged faults are acknowledged and at-tended to timeously,” said mayoral com-mittee member for Corporate Services Al-derman Demetri Qually.

TANDY-LEE MARINUS
Graphic design student at Cape Peninsu-la University of Technology, KeenanJeppe (23), from Kuils River has been se-lected as a finalist in the Shift: InspiringSustainable Design competition.
In information provided byMANGO-OMCmore is said about this annual design compe-tition run by Shift, in partnership with theDepartment of Arts and Culture. Shift is aSouth-African non-profit organisation. The concept and aim of the competition,
was to address the issues of designing sus-tainable solutions for a range of challengesfaced by people and the environment.Contestants were tasked under the theme,
Small Change, AWorld of Difference to comeupwith proposals and designs for the compe-tition.Along with his partner Nosipho Ngqula,
Keenan’s ideawas based around landfills be-ing filledwith everyday trash by consumers.“It is important to note that there will be
a shortage of space for the consumer’s trashto be disposed of, and to remember that welive in a closed cycled world,” Keenan said. The concept however had to be narrowed
down, and therefore focus was placed onhousehold waste, in townships such asNyanga, which is a concern for becoming an-other landfill amongst people. It was this background knowledge that
brought Keenan and his partner the idea ofplacing recycle bins alongside these homesin order to help develop a cleaner township.“However, we are still in the process of re-
fining the concept and developing on ourthoughts and strategies to better our concepton community recycling,” he said.“As a result of attentionbeing placedmost-
ly on urban areas, the circumstances inwhich townships are often found is over-looked, making it difficult from a day to daybasis.“We see great potential involving a com-
munity development project.”Keenan’s mind was set on a Chinese prov-
erb which reads, “Give a man a fish and youfeed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and
you feed him for a lifetime.”This highlights their aim to teach the com-
munity to recycle, keeping inmind that plac-ing bins therewill not do the trick on its own;their plan will be furthered to include a pro-gramme that will give back to the communi-ty for their efforts on recycling.“It will become a norm to them over time,
and it won’t be seen as recycling, but a life-style as to making an income for them-selves.”Keenan will compete as one of 16 finalists
and three winners will be chosen in Febru-ary 2013 and awarded cash prizes as well asa knowledge exchange trip to Sweden tolearn more about sustainable design.
A design challenge
Keenan Jeppe (Kuilsriver), has been selectedas a finalist along with a partner, in the Shift:Inspiring Sustainable Design Competition fortheir community recycling development project.

You can’t really know a man until youwalk a mile in his shoes.
Marc Buhrer (31) and Shane McConnachi(32) put this saying into practice recently. Intrying to understand what life is like for thethousands of homeless people living on thestreets of Cape Town, they criss-crossed thecity as two of the destitute. The twomen, fromSeaPoint andBlouberg-
strand respectively, not only walked a milebut spent a whole week on the streets, with-out the luxuries they are accustomed to intheir lives as successful entrepreneurs. The Walk the Walk initiative was Marc’s
idea.“For my 31st birthday in March this year
I decided to do something different to my de-baucherous 30th. I got some mates togetherand we cooked food for 220 people at The Ha-ven shelter. Everyone that got involved saidit was the most amazing thing and it was thebest birthday I ever had. So we just decidedto go bigger and better,” Marc explained. This led to the Facebook group Dare to
Share through which they served more foodto people living on the streets. The support fromco-opTV, aSouthAfrican
online TV broadcaster, meant Marc andShane had two video diaries posted onlineeach day in which they reported back ontheir experiences and emotions.“I’m tired, hungry, exhausted and mildly
frustrated and it’s only day one at 15:30. Wehave tried doing a few things but are kept be-ing told no, no. What if you are in this situa-tion for years and years and you are kept be-ing told no, by people who seem to have eve-rything, isn’t thatwhere crime comes from?”Mark pondered on the first day.The first night they slept at a construction
site in Green Point.“It wasmiserably, miserably cold, the tem-
perature must have dropped below 10 de-grees. We had no cover and then the windpicked up,” Shane said.He said perception is lethal.“We met a lady who has been living on the
streets for 45 years. She is asthmatic, hasHIVand TB and is an epileptic.“When she gets her medicine she is obvi-
ously drowsy.“The police automatically think she is
drunk or high when they see her and theylock her up. She wakes up in a cell. That’snot really human rights – but that’s the firstthing we do, we assume.”“You see a guy out of Pollsmoor, full of tat-
toos. You don’t have the income to get rid ofthe tattoos even if your life has changed andyou have learnt your lesson,” Marc said.“We have met people who have made such
positive changes like Gasper,” Mark said inreference to a former 28s prison gang mem-ber who they found working at a plot inTamboerskloof, clearing away wood. The streets are however a drug and Mark
has changed his mind in how to support tho-se living there.“You live frommeal tomeal. You deal with
where you’ll sleep that evening, when youare tired and you have to sleep and that onlyhappens after you have dinner,” Mark said, explaining how life pulls you in.He adds that the lack of routine and disci-
pline also prevents many street people fromgetting off the streets permanently.“Giving these people money only keeps
them on the streets. We should rather sup-port them by buying overnight vouchersfrom shelters or by supporting the sheltersthemselves.”Visit http://new.livestream.com/co-opT/

Brand new South African bank notessporting former president Nelson Man-dela’s face on the front came into circula-tion last Tuesday 6 September.
According to media releases PresidentJacob Zuma, at a press briefing, said the newSouth African bank notes bearing the imageof Nelson Mandela would make South Afri-cans remember their achievements.
The new note series have the same R10,R20, R50, R100 and R200 denominations andsame sizes with the engraving of Mandela’sface appearing on the different coloured cur-rency.TygerBurger spoke to local residents to
find out how they felt about the newly re-leased notes.
“I am proud to say that I am part of a coun-try with a leader like Madiba. He deservesit,” said Shimoney Regter from Eerste River. This was but one of the positive reactions cit-izens expressed in reaction to the new notes.
However, not everyone was impressedwith the change. Overall, mixed feelingswere forthcoming from members of the pub-lic on Tuesday.
Some people knew that the notes will bechanging thanks to public awareness cam-paigns.
Others were truly shocked. The notes which now sports much flashier
colours were put in the same category as“monopoly money” by some.
“Someone brought it to me and I thoughtit looked fake and it’s too big and bright,”said 20-year-old Nikita Britow from Bell–ville.
“The colour is too bright, it looks extreme-ly fake and it’s just ugly,” said Megan Visag-ie from Bellville.
The new notes have new security features, including raised print and a the paper chang-es colour when lifted and exposed to light.
Reserve governor Gill Marcus describedthe South African currency as a “symbol ofthe nation”.
Residents respond tocountry’s new Randelas
Ian Barnard from Bellville: “I am proud thatMadibawas chosen as a symbol on our currency notes. All the recognition should be givento him. This is a way to make the youth awareof the important role he played in this countryand for outsiders to knowwho he is when theycome here.” Photos: Tamsyn Coerecius
Marc Hendreckse fromPlumstead:The noteslook cool. It’ssomethingdifferent. Itdoes looklike Monopolymoney, but itstands outand is agreat way tohonour him.”
DaniëlleDaniels fromNorthpine: Itlooks a bit
fake, but it’sgreat that
Mandela is onthere. He is
an icon. I likethe R100
note becauseit stands out.
Roxy Thsiwala from Delft: The material is verydifferent and it certainly catches your eye. It’samazing that Mandela is on it.
KuoChenWu from Boston: The notes are interesing and very fresh. Would be easy to recognise a fake. I know it’s important to the country that Mandela is on there.

The second stop on the Bondi Blu/Laguna Mall kit-eracing series that was held at Big Bay last week pro-vided a steady 14 knots south-easter wind and a rela-tively calm ocean.Sailing speeds from the athletes were therefore
amazing to watch as they moved around the coursejust outside of the rocky little islands. At the start of the race itwasOlafMartingwho start-
ed on port tack and who straight away had an advan-tage over the rest of the field. Title contenders OswaldSmith and Colin Heckroodt’s battle for second posi-tion saw them closing the distance on Marting. Thelatter had to eventually give up the race as his kitesize of choiceproved too small for thewindconditions.A little further back in the field another battle was
going on between Ettienne Oelofse and Oscar Arm-strong.The victory in the men’s open category eventually
went to Smith, followed by Heckroodt and then Oelof-ste.In the women’s division Iva Lopez came out trumps
over Simone Swanepoel. The men’s junior category was won by Oscar Arm-
strong followed by Dylan Adriaans.

William Jacobs’ second half goal provedenough to secure Riverside Rangers a 1-0victory over Norway Parks in a semi-fi-nal match of the SAFA Cape Town play-offs at Avonwood Park on Sunday. The only goal came in the 60th minute
and the home side faced a nervous 20min-utes with two men down as they held onto the final whistle.Riverside Rangers will now meet Fire-
fighters in the final.A genuine two-footed player, William
Jacobs can out-sprint even the quickestdefenders, and his adaptability means hecan move up front when needed. He alsohas a relaxed temperament, so doesn’trise to provocation.Despite the defeat, Norway Parks de-
serve some credit as they put up a bravefight but could not score a goal.Composed in defence, Riverside Rang-
ers’ midfield gave Norway Parks playersno chance to control the game, as theytook the game to a high tempo. In more than 90 minutes of intense bat-
tle, Joshua Jacobs, the Riverside Rangersgoalkeeper did not have a save to makeand has to be something Norway Parkswill reflect on with huge regret.DeonWarely, the Norway Parks coach,
opted for a more cautious conservativeapproach, packing out his midfield andleaving Zane Alexander to lead the visi-
tors from Kensington’s attack. No easy task at the best of times, but
particularly difficult against defenders ofthe quality of Horatuis Petersen. It was a limp performance from Nor-
way Parks lacking finesse, lacking thoseusual levels of drive and determination. They surrender possession far too easi-
ly and then show a lack of energy and de-sire to get the ball back.More worryingly, their once proud de-
fence has become depressingly leaky. These are the type of elementary mis-takes that unravel a team’s hard work inseconds, and Norway Parks is findingthat out the hard way.“We had possibilities to score a second
or third goal, in the first half, it’s aboutworking hard, not sitting back, movingforward and keeping possession.“Unfortunately we didn’t get the sec-
ond goal, but it worked out okay. Wecould do with a bit more drive and powerin front of goal. Sometimes there was toomuch passing close to goal,” said the Riv-erside Rangers coach Leslie Mondo. Weneed to improve, we need to strengthencertain areas and look at changing ourgame plan.”Mondo was also concerned his players
were losing confidence in their own abili-ties. Both teams finished the game withnine players.
