Mailbag!Longtime readers may remember
when we the mail we got wasas likely to contain anthraxspores as an actual letter.Times have changed, and nowour mailboxes, both physicaland electronic, fill with questions,challenges and the occasional thankyou. Here are a few that caught our eye oflate, one each for the aforementioned reasons.

Mike Reynolds:I am a loyal reader of your
publication. Every time I enter a cornerstore I quickly glance over to the newsstand section to see if your latest issueis out yet. I am very happy to say that
this latest issue about Jayme BlashkesREAL research about the ChickenRanch has been my favorite one yet.I wish your issues would contain moreN.B. TX and surrounding area historyand pics/journalism.
Your issues are great, and beingof Mexican descent, your Ask aMexican section always makes myfamily and I laugh. Although ourfamily is not perfect, some of us areavid readers, graduates (university,college, tech schools, whatever) butsome of our family members arecurrent TDC inmates and total losers.
Now to the main point andreal reason that drove me towrite this letter.
On page #2 of your issues, whyis it that you or whoever alwaysprints Look Mommy! Daddys in thepaper!, when in some issues like thislatest one (Volume Four, Issue One,
01.01.15), four out of six of ComalCountys Most Wanted are, well, youguessed it - FEMALES! Plus I bet youmy bottom dollar that most of not allare in fact mommies.
I love your publication! Fromthe ads about local places to the livebands section, everything is coolabout your issues. Only that oneconstant print of Look, Mommyjust bothers the **** out of me. Itfeels so 1950s housewifey. Please
throw in a Look, Daddy! Mommysin the paper every so often.

First of all, we dont slander. We neverslander. We libel. As for the article, lets see
that text heres the quote in question: TheDoggie Carnival is superior to regular carnivals

A careful reading reveals that we werelibeling carnies. And we stand by that. Theyrea filthy people of low moral constitution. Asfor your letter, sir, we havent seen that manyerrors packed into such a small space since

There is something about personal tragedy
that propels some people forward to the
benefit of others.
In 2012, Lauren and Colby Clawson lost
their infant son, Callen. Today, the couple
wants to provide a haven for children and
adults with disabilities.
Lauren had developed complications
while pregnant, and oxygen was cutoff to
Callen, causing brain damage. The prognosis
was not good.
The doctors werent expecting him to live,
she said. He made it through birth and stayed
in the NICU for about a month. The doctors
thought he wouldnt be able to do anything
other than lie there, unable to eat or move.
But neither the parents nor Callen were
ready to give in.
We were very fortunate to have the
therapist we had, who worked with him
weekly while I worked with him daily, Lauren
said. He got to where he could roll over andhold his head up and eating from a bottle.
Despite Callens enormous progress,
there were, in the end, too many problems
to overcome.
His brain damage caused him to
have seizures, Lauren said. At about 5
a.m. one morning, he had a seizure and
asphyxiated. He passed away.

My sister took me to the Play All-Abilities
Park in Round Rock, where we saw a 4-year-
old playing with a child who had Downs
Syndrome, Lauren said. Never once did that
4-year-old see any difference between them.
To those two kids, they were just superheroes
out to save the world. It was amazing to see.
My husband and I agreed that this park was
something we need to do.
The Air Force transferred Colby to nearby
Randolph and the couple moved to New
Braunfels. And, in June, they decided to work
toward building an All-Abilities Park here,
which they will call Callens Castle.
Because of Callen and everything he
taught us and everything he was able to do
with his short life, we wanted to do something
like this for him, Lauren said.
Plans are for the park to be a place where
those with disabilities can safely play in an
environment that takes those with a wide-range
of disabilities into account. The Clawsons also
want a place where all kids can come to play,as well, where both the disabled and non-
disabled can learn from one another.
I want it to be geared toward a very
broad range of disabilities, Lauren said.
I want it to range from kids with autism,
to kids with vision or hearing imparities, as
well as kids who are walking impaired. The
main thing that will separate it from other
parks is that it will be fenced in as a safetyprecaution, so parents can feel safer with
their kids running around.
There are several types of playground
equipment Lauren would like to see at Callens
Castle. There are swings for wheelchairs,
merry-go-rounds where kids can sit, music
pods, ramps onto the playscapes, colored
steps so the visually impaired can see their
way up to the playscapes, and more.
They also have a zip-line for kids with
disabilities, which I want so bad, Lauren said.
Callens Castle is also partnering with
the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation to build a
multipurpose sports field where the children
can play sports safely. The field, Lauren said,
would be either turf or padded matting.
As well, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation
partners itself with Unlimited Play, who builds the
playground area. Currently, the Clawsons are
working out the final hurdles with Unlimited Play.
For its part, the City of New Braunfels has
donated four acres for the park at FM 1044
and Old Marion Road.
The couple is hoping to raise $2 millionfor the park, and Lauren said she would
love to see it open in 2-3 years, but shes well
aware that $2 million is a lot to raise.
On Saturday, January 17, proceeds from
the Blowin Off Steamboat Music Festival are
going to benefit Callens Castle. The festival,
which will be held at Freiheit County Store,
runs from noon-midnight.
I was so happy when (Concert Organizerand TX Citizen Director of Distribution) Chase
Cochran called me about the Blowin Off
Steamboat festival, Lauren said. My husband
and I are both from the Austin area, and we
love Texas music. This has been amazing.
In October, the couples first fundraiser
was a ladies mud wrestling tournament.
My husband and I are a little redneck,
Lauren said. When we held the womens mud
wrestling event, it was, unfortunately, a little
cold. Only four girls, including myself, showed
up to wrestle, but it was still a blast. Doing a
mud-run would also be awesome.
Lauren said she would also like to hold
a fundraising golf tournament, as well as a
variety of galas.

$10 at the door, which is a pretty nice pricefor 12 hours of live music plus the warm feeling
you get when supporting a worthy cause.

Dear Mexican: Troughout most of
my life, I called the state of Wisconsin
my home. It was a plethora of cows
and German people, and just as cold
as everyone throughout the rest of the
country would expect. However, upon
my later years I chose to move to an
apartment in Milwaukee on Lincoln
Avenue and 29th Street. Within this
area, I found I was one of the few white
people in the neighborhood, as most
of the location was full of Mexicans
and others from the Latin American
community. Tis was mainly down
Lincoln and a few other streets.

people prefer the warmer climates,
and yet I can remember my old
neighborhood with Mexican people
flourishing. I pride myself in knowing
that each person has a choice to
use free will, so Im sure most just
preferred cooler weather. However,

On the Personhoodof CorporationsWe live in a sound bite culture. Oftentimes,
this is looked upon as a bad thing, used toimply that humanity is suffering from an ever-
decreasing attention span or an inability to
grasp complicated concepts. But, it seems to
me just as likely that this attempt to abbreviate
ideas is tied to our desire to be more efficient,
to get more done in less time. I even see it
as being similar to the human drive to define
experience through poetry, just one more way
that we all try to make sense of our world.
That doesnt mean that these attempts arealways successful. Over the last few days, I
have discussed several situations where an
attempt to make an idea simpler through
abbreviation simply didnt work and actually
hindered the message. The most obvious of
these was the quote ascribed to Sarah Palin
that she could see Russia from her window.
Russia is not visible from the Palin home in
Wasilla, nor did Sarah Palin suggest that it
was. What Palin had said was that Russia
was visible from places in Alaska, trying to
imply that, as Governor of Alaska, she was
well aware of the importance of Russia in
Americas foreign policy. The result was a
comedy sketch including the aforementioned
quote and substantial derision ever since. Fair
or not, the consequences are at least in part
due to the language Palin used.
A similar situation occurred when MittRomney said that corporations are people.
In this case, Romney wasnt misquoted, but
he has also been scoffed at ever since. The
rallying cry of corporations arent people!
has been used in just about every left wing
cause since then. The worst part of this is that
Romneys statement isnt actually wrong, but if
he had spent just a bit more time explaining
it, it might have been better received.
Corporations are, in fact, people, and thereare some very good reasons why we give
corporations certain rights, including some
that are listed in the Bill of Rights.
Corporations are people. They are made
up of people just like you and me, and they are,
as far as the law is concerned, legal persons.
Because corporations are legal persons, they
are capable of owning property, bringing suit
and being sued, and entering into contracts.A corporation is just a way for people to
organize together to accomplish some goal,
and because those individual people have
rights, the corporation, acting in their stead,
also has rights. Corporations have these rights
to some extent out of necessity. Corporations
couldnt function usefully otherwise. But, thebasis of those rights comes from the people
that make up the corporations; they are not
new or extra rights; they are only the basic
rights that are afforded to the people that make
up the corporation. This is the type of thinking
that resulted in two recent and controversial
cases before the Supreme Court: the Citizens
United and the Hobby Lobby decisions.
In the Citizens United case, the SupremeCourt decided that corporations had a right
to speech. The Constitution outlines a right to
speech in its First Amendment, and since the
people who make up a corporation have this
right, the right transfers to the corporation as
well. In essence, the corporation is speaking
for it members. How the corporation uses its
right to speech might require some method
of determining the consensus of its members,
or the individual members might allow thosewho manage the corporation to use this
speech right to further the direct interest
of the corporation, but to take away the
corporations right to speech would be to
hamper the speech of its members.
Many have been troubled by the decision
because it allows corporate entities to become
involved in national politics to a greater extent.
The concern seems to be that ever-increasing
amounts of money in politics is corrupting the
system. There is some merit to this complaint,
but only some. Money has always been part
of politics and, as far as I can see, so has
corruption. The very fact that government
regulates business is what gives corporations
the interest in controlling that regulation in the
first place. We dont prevent individual citizens
from becoming involved in election issues that
directly affect them; there seems no logicalreason why we should do so to corporations.
Similarly, the Hobby Lobby decision
applied the First Amendment rights regarding
religion to corporations. Once again, this
is a right enjoyed by the people who make
up the corporation and is something that the
members can pass on to the corporation. With
Hobby Lobby, this was applied very narrowly.
The corporation had a very limited number of
members, and there was little question about
their desires. It would be interesting to see
if the Court would apply the decision to a
corporation including more varied members if
some method of consideration for the desires
of the members could be determined.
Both of these cases are just the logicalextension of the members of a corporation
exercising their personal rights. The specifics
within the law are new, but the rights
themselves are not.
So what other rights might be expected to
apply to corporations? Well, I would assume
that it would be limited to rights that are held
by the members of the corporation and rights
that the corporation might exercise in its own
interest of the interest of its members.
If youre still not convinced, consider
other rights identified in the Bill of Rights.
Arent corporations themselves a manner in
which we exercise our freedom to assemble?
Do corporations have the right to petition the
government over grievances? Both these are
covered by the First Amendment. The Third
and Fourth Amendments both involve the
security of property rights. Would we expectthe government to be allowed to quarter
soldiers on the property of some corporation
or seize property without a warrant or cause?
The Fifth through Eighth Amendments deal
with the judicial process, and most if not all
of the provisions would seem to logically
apply to corporations just as they would to
the individuals making up that corporation.
We dont question an individual exercising
these rights, why would we do so when the
exercise them cooperatively?
It wouldnt be possible to operate a
corporation without applying some individual
rights to them. And, its difficult to say what
rights might need to be applied to corporations
in advance. Its important to remember that
these rights are not given to us by government.
By extension, they are also not given to
corporations either. These are rights that areinherent. Thus far the courts have ruled on the
applicability of certain right to corporations,
but that may not be the end of it. Remember that
the Ninth Amendment says: The enumeration
in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not
be construed to deny or disparage others
retained by the people. I would suggest this
probably applies to corporations as well.
