Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text messaging posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers.

Microblogging is a form of multimedia blogging that allows users to send brief text updates or micromedia such as photos or audio clips and publish them. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging , E-mail, digital audio or the web.

A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.

Teachers are always trying to combat student apathy and at the University of Texas, History Professor, Monica Rankin, has found an interesting way to do so using Twitter in the classroom.

Rankin uses a weekly hashtag to organize comments, questions and feedback posted by students to Twitter during class. Rankin then projects a giant image of live Tweets in the front of the class for discussion and suggests that students refer back to the Messages later when studying.

Results: students are participating in classroom Discussions and making meaning of their Learning experiences.
