SPIRITUALITY

Spotlight on Spirituality:

Live with Intention

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God - what is good and acceptable and

perfect.“ ~Romans 12:2

“I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.” ~Henry David Thoreau

“We learn and grow and are transformed not so much by what we do but by why and how we do it.” ~Sharon Salzberg

“Nothing is impossible. The word itself says ‘I’m Possible.’ ” ~Audrey Hepburn

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” ~Lao Tzu

“If you have a goal, write it down. If you do not write it down you don’t have a goal - you have a wish.” ~Steve Maraboli

In my childhood my mother often placed a pan on the oil stove with water so as

to put humidity into the air. She would put various types of spices in the water

and give such wonderful aromas throughout the house. Such is the work of Twin

Towers Pastoral Care for 2015. You will see some ideas of spirituality throughout

Twin Towers along with the Campus Informer. Think of them as a pleasing

aroma for your spiritual pilgrimage as we grow together.

Blessings,

Chaplain Joe, Chaplain Rebecca, Chaplain David, Jennifer.

THE CONNECTION

What is Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s Disease Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement, commonly

causes stiffness and the slowing of movement. During the early stages of Parkinson’s, arm swing

and heel-to-toe strike begin to disappear, while speech may become soft and slurred. Although

Parkinson’s Disease cannot be cured, the symptoms can be regulated with medication prescribed by

the doctor, regular exercise (including flexibility and balance), and sometimes surgery to

regulate certain regions of the brain.

Parkinson’s Home Remedies and Lifestyle Healthy Eating– Eating a well-balanced diet gives the essential nutrients that are beneficial.

Exercise– Flexibility, Balance, and Resistance Training are important to help cope with the

struggles of Parkinson’s.

Avoiding Falls– Falling becomes more susceptible, so picking the feet up higher, avoid

walking with items in the hands, and making wide turns will help prevent falls from occurring.

Daily Living Activities– These activities become more difficult to perform, so practicing these

tasks with a professional, such as a Therapist, make the techniques easier.

Tip: Take “Giant Steps” when

walking to maintain a big

center of gravity.

Tip: When the individual is

“frozen” or cannot move,

encourage them to start

marching so they will pick

up their feet.

Breaking news hot off the press…….2015 is upon us…..

As we ring in New Year we have so many things to be thankful for: we have a

home in which we can socialize, play cards, sing, do art, attend bible study, worship,

celebrate birthdays and anniversaries….the list could go on for a very long time. We

in the LEC Foundation & Volunteer Services are grateful for each of our residents, our

associates, our family members, volunteers and our strategic partners. We are

blessed each day to see persons sharing their talents whether they serve on a work

group, work in Gifts-n-More, do music ministry for our residents or other notable acts

of kindness.

In 2014 we were blessed with gifts totaling $217,462 for the Benevolent needs,

$45,717 for the Pastoral Care needs, and received a gift of $100,000 for the Wilson

Chapel Renovation. Many events were hosted to celebrate our founding. Can you

believe that we have been in existence for 115 years? We often hear persons say,

“where has the time gone?” We are certain that a lot of life and living has gone into

those 115 years of serving.

We have 116 members of the Twin Towers Auxiliary and including 45 associates

who work here at Twin Towers. The tea was a big success with great silent auction

items to bid on. Work is already underway for next year’s tea. The Twin Towers

Auxiliary appreciates your patronage in Gifts-n-More and asks that you renew your

membership in January. Further information will be forthcoming if you have not paid

your dues. The dues are one of the ways we are able to make gifts to various funds

and departments in early March. Please be as generous as your means allow you to

be.

In 2015 we plan to work to raise $400,000 for the Benevolent Fund at Twin Towers.

This will be achieved by personal gifts, memorials directed to the fund, our annual

associate appeal and the Blessing of the Angel Tree. Together we can reach and

exceed this goal. This truly is important to our ministry to take care of our residents

who have outlived their resources and it connects us to our legacy from our founding

in 1899. The other main fundraising need will be the renovation of the Wilson

Chapel. We are seeking gifts of support to raise $250,000 in 2015.

We also grew our Living Legacy membership at Twin Towers by 4 new members

in 2014. Members are those persons who have placed Twin Towers in their estate

plans, have done a charitable gift annuity, made a gift of insurance by placing Twin

Towers as a beneficiary, or have directed a portion or all of their refund for living at

Twin Towers or have made us aware of future memorial gifts to Twin Towers upon

their passing. If you are interested in learning more please call Molly Talbot at

719-3540 or Tom Reusch at 853-2009. Happy New Year!!!
