Parish News

Dear Parishioners, This weekend, we hear the parable of the workers in the vineyard. The way we feel about the parable probably depends on the ones with whom we identify. A landowner hires workers at the beginning of the day, agreeing to pay them for a full day’s work, and then continues to hire workers as time passes to work for the remainder of the day. When it comes time to pay them, the landowner is generous and pays them all for a full day’s work, whether they worked the whole day or just the final hour. If we identify with those who come late in the day, this parable gives us great comfort. Even though we may have wasted time in our lives, not always laboring for God the way that we should have, being idle and doing what we felt like doing instead of doing God’s will, He will still be generous with us. If we come to our senses, stop being idle and work for God’s kingdom with whatever time we have left, God will be generous with us. If we identify with those who worked from the beginning, this parable should still be good news to us. It shows us that God is just and does not withhold the rewards that come from our work. It is not as though the landowner took from the wage of those who worked all day and gave part of it to those who worked less so that they would all be the same. That would be unjust. Rather, out of his superabundance, he was able to give those who worked all day their just wage, and also be generous and give to the others the full daily wage. The point of the parable is to express God’s generosity; if we interpret it to mean that we will all be the same in heaven, we have read too much into it. When James and John approach Jesus and say, “Command that we will sit on your right and on your left in your kingdom,” meaning, command that we have the places of honor above the others; Jesus does not say that no such position exists, but rather that that was for his heavenly Father to determine. There are differences in heaven. Our capacity to receive God’s love increases with our holiness. It is true that those in heaven are equal in their dignity because they are all children of God, and they are equal in their destiny in that they are with God in heaven for eternity. But because of the life that Blessed Teresa of Calcutta lived and the love that she gave throughout her life, she is capable of experiencing a greater intimacy and bond with God than the scoundrel who repents on his deathbed. Speaking metaphorically, her soul has expanded to the size of an ocean because of her holiness, whereas the soul of the repentant scoundrel is the size of a thimble because of his lack of love throughout his life. Both will be full of God’s love in heaven and so will want for nothing, but the one can hold much more than the other. That is why we should never aim for the minimum, for just good enough. Knowing that we can start working late in the day and still receive the daily wage should not convince us to be idle all day. The time to work is always now. If we have managed to root out mortal sins from our lives, then we need to start working on the venial sins. If we have managed to be just in our dealings with others, then it is time to start working on being generous. There is always more work to be done, more progress that we could make in our pursuit of holiness. It is not a superfluous effort that would just get us into heaven by a large margin when a small one would have done just as well. Rather, it is a way for us to grow in our capacity to receive the love of God. God will treat us justly, but He will also treat us with generosity. Let us make ourselves capable of receiving all that He has to give. –Fr. Liekhus

You’ve heard the saying “it’s not where you start but how you finish.” This certainly applies to this Bible passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own lives, but for the lives of others as well. We are called to generously share our gifts with others, not hoard them for our own use. Through our gratitude and generosity we help each other get

to Heaven! Thank you for answering God’s call to generously share the gifts given you with others. Your stewardship pledge enables St. Gabriel to provide rich ministries and celebrate with worship and music.

. . Muchos no tienen ningún visitante.
