“The Great Dr. William H. McConnell, Senior Minister

Delegator” [email protected]

John 1:43-51

Jesus the Savior refuses to work alone. Fromthe beginning, he reaches out and designates others tojoin with him in his work. Jesus, in doing the work ofthe Kingdom of God, is the Great Delegator. You andI, as contemporary disciples of Jesus, are those who are delegated towork with him in his mission to the world.

Jesus is not only the Light of the World, the Light that shinesin the darkness, a frequent Johannine theme, but, Jesus is the lightthat enlightens everyone. His light shines on ordinary people, enabling them to come forth and be part of their kingdom. In John,Jesus is depicted not only as "the Lamb of God who takes away the sinof the world" but also as the one who calls others to work with him. No sooner is Jesus baptized than he calls 12 disciples, a number thatcorresponds to the sons of Israel, the leaders of the 12 tribes.

He is reconstituting, gathering scattered Israel. Thus thereare "politics" behind this text. It is politics in that it depicts theformation of a new "kingdom," and proclaims and enacts a new"king." Though we are never given a list of the 12, in this Gospel, thecall of the disciples, signified in the call of Philip and Nathanael, isplaced front and center.

Habari from Kenya! That’s “Hello” in Swahili! As we look back on the week here we are grateful for the many doors our Lord hasopened for ministry and connection with the people of Kenya and the other missionaries. Each of us has had special opportunities.

There has been a lot to learn through the non-stop activity of Tenwek’s ER. In many ways they are up to date – with the friendliestelectronic medical record system I have ever used – and at the same time it seems I’ve stepped back 50 years. Tenwek is a well-respectedteaching hospital and I have been blessed with special opportunities to interact with interns and residents and others.

Brenda, Nathanael, Joshua, Rachel and Joseph have had opportunities to visit Kenyan children in the pediatric ward. They broughtmany smiles in the ward with their puppets and coloring pages. Moms and children alike loved making rubber band bracelets with Rachel. Onegirl in the ward is Christine, a 15 year old orphan who is no bigger than Joseph or Rachel. She is very ill with HIV cardiomyopathy and feelsfrightened. After our visit, the pediatrician told us that he had not seen Christine smile even once until we had come to share with the children. Christine is now doing much better and is to be released from the hospital. It is a blessing to be able to share the love of Jesus with children.

Last Monday, Brenda and the children traveled with another family for an hour on dirt roads full of ruts and rocks to visit the BostoOrphanage. The orphanage sits on a mountain overlooking a rain forest and small tea farms. Forty-two children are housed in a simple dormfull of bunk beds and small metal trunks that hold all of their belongings. We ate a lunch of white rice, red kidney beans and mandazi bread withthe children. During the sharing time we dramatized “Caps for Sale,” and the children laughed at Nathanael’s funny antics as the peddler. Wealso sang and prayed together.

Brenda is teaching theatre classes for the missionary home school children on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and had the privilege ofteaching a drama workshop for Kenyan students on Saturday. It has been fun to connect Bible stories with some of Brenda’s favorite lessonplans. “David and Goliath” went well with “Jack and the Beanstalk,” and the “Feeding of the 5,000" combined nicely with “If You Give a Mouse aCookie.”

Nathanael and Joshua have been helping to sort and count pills and have visited nearby villages through Tenwek’s community outreachprogram. They are having fun working on projects with several college students who are at Tenwek as summer interns. Nathanael and Brendaalso had fun joining the Kenyan praise team at church today.

We appreciate your prayers. Please continue to pray for our health and safety and for opportunities to connect with the people hereand to share Christ’s love. Pray also for the many patients who are sick and injured and for the medical teams who work long hours withservants’ hearts to minister to body and soul.

Love and blessings to all of you. The Lawtons
