Parish News

Dear Parishioners, Advent is finally here. This is a season of joyful expectation, a season of hope and a season of preparation. All of our prayers point to the day when Christ will return, the day when all evil and suffering will be gone forever. Just as he came to earth when he was born of the Virgin Mary and died on the cross to save us from our sins, so will he come to earth again in glory, and this time wipe away even the effects of our sins, so that we will be with him in heaven forever. It is a wonderful season of joy and of hope. And yet, this first Sunday of Advent when we are supposed to look forward to the return of our Lord, we hear that there will be those who will die of fright because of what is coming upon the world. You don’t hear that on the radio stations that are already playing Christmas songs. It’s enough to make you pause and consider whether or not we really want to pray too hard for the return of our Lord. It doesn’t sound like a very joyful time at all. Maybe it would be better if it happened after we died. The gospel we hear this Sunday is a sobering gospel. There is no fluff here; it gives a message from our Lord that is very serious. Do not be distracted. Be vigilant at all times and pray for strength. He cautions us not to let our hearts become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness, or even from the anxieties of daily life. That is an especially sobering message during this season, and therefore all the more necessary, this season of Christmas parties, of last minute shopping and running from one place to another. Amid all of this, we are told not to be distracted, to not let our hearts become drowsy. How are we supposed to do that? How do we fight the temptation of being distracted by the busyness of this season? It’s actually not that complicated. We do what we’ve been doing all along. We remain faithful to our prayer life. We do not cling to material things for our happiness. We continue to do acts of mercy and love to those around us. In his second letter to the Thessalonians that we hear, St. Paul tells them: you know how to conduct yourselves, and you have indeed been doing so, well. As we wait for our Lord’s return, do so even more, persevere in that conduct. But the temptation is to do the opposite, to excuse ourselves from these things, to think: “this time of the year is so busy, I just don’t have time to pray the way I know I should. I can’t be expected to be cheerful and loving to others when there is so much demanded of me right now. If I’m crabby and ill-tempered towards others, they’re just going to have to excuse me because I’ve earned the right to be that way. And now I’ll find some enjoyment in this food or this drink or these possessions I worked so hard to earn.” Of course we know better than that, it sounds silly when we say it out loud, but that doesn’t make the temptation any less strong. That is why we begin this season with the reminder to be extra vigilant, to be even more intentional in setting aside that time for prayer, in going out of our way to express our love for those around us, of resisting the temptation to find comfort and solace in material things. These things will help us be vigilant and prepare for our Lord’s return. But we do them not only for our own good, but in order to be a witness for those around us of what this season is about, most especially for our children. The attitude that we have and the traditions that we practice surrounding Advent are so influential in shaping the attitudes that our children will have. What are we teaching them? What are they learning from us? The best gift that we can give to them, what we want to teach them by our example, is a heart that looks to the needs of others first and one that is full of love and gratitude for our Lord. Advent is finally here. It is a time of joyful expectation and hope. So let us renew our commitment to preparing ourselves for our Lord’s return and be especially vigilant during this time to how we give thanks to God and show our love for each other. Fr. Liekhus
