Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Parish Life Weekly Schedule It is again Tuesday as I compose this. I have reached the farthest point on my vacation travels and have turned the nose of my

Honda back towards Wisconsin. I had a couple days in Philadelphia (visiting the colonial sites for the first time and some exquisite old cemeteries) and then slid down to Washington, D.C. It’s been six years since my last visit, but I have begun to find our national capital as sprawling and a bit overwhelming, so I spent my time around the edges … tramping through the fields of a favorite Civil War battlefield (Second Manasses) and investing a day at George Washington’s plantation at Mount Vernon. It had been more than fifty years since my only previous visit there, when my father took his wife and his three younger kids on a summer trip to D.C. I have only one memory of my childhood visit to Mount Vernon, the smell of the English boxwood bushes in the garden. It was pleasant to smell them again. So, while I had been there before, it was like a first time. I guess I hadn’t been paying much attention back then. So, I learned some new things. For example, the story I had picked up somewhere that George Washington had a set of wooden dentures is wrong, wrong, wrong. The truth is even stranger. Just as the Revolutionary War fighting was wrapping up at Yorktown (1781), the forty-nine-year-old G.W. ordered his first set of dentures made of hippopotamus ivory and six human teeth. The plate had a hole that allowed the unit to be placed over and anchored on his one remaining tooth. Eek! No wonder in his last portraits he is never smiling. To see the dentures on display was itself worth the (admittedly pricey) entrance fee to Mount Vernon. The other thing that impressed me was the emphasis on telling the stories of the plantation’s enslaved population. In my eagerness to get to where I wanted to go, the first days of my vacation were very long and jam-packed, out of the door before sunrise and not checking into my hotel until dark. Now that I am making my way back, the pace is more leisurely. I spent some time with friends in Washington and returning home via visiting my brother and sister-in-law in Lexington, Kentucky … our first face-to-face encounter since COVID. Speaking of which (COVID, not my family), perhaps it’s the higher population density on the East Coast or the Red State/Blue State thing, but virus protocols have been very much in evidence. National parks, highway rest stops, stores … indeed, the church where I worshiped on Sunday was requiring everyone to distance and mask. A token of that (though it might have been a one-time mistake) was that a bottle of disinfectant sat on the altar through the Eucharistic Prayer and the Communion Rite. Even so, the congregation was invited to share the Sign of Peace. I guess consistency is in the eye of the beholder. In any case, if you see me at Sunday Mass, you know I got back in one piece. It’s always good to come home after such an escapade for, as I chatted about last week in this space, the point of a get-away for me isn’t to come back all rested and tanned but that having seen and learned so much I come back more appreciative of the nation’s natural beauty and the grandeur of its story. Based on that measure, it’s been a wonderful trip. The benefit for you in that is, with this absence, you will look all fresh and new to me. And I will be pleased to see you. And that, too, is what a vacation is for. Msgr. Mark

Readings for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 17, 2021

Isaiah 53:10-11; Hebrews 4:14-16; Mark 10:35-42

We can find a good bit of comfort in James’ and John’s very bad day. We are on the home stretch of Mark’s story of Jesus, and his inner circle still don’t understand him. Just before this passage, Jesus has announced his impend-ing suffering and death for a third time, but in asking to be “on his left and right side” (think of the seats of honor at the head table at a banquet) they are aiming for spots of power and ease. Again, Jesus sits them down and ham-mers home that greatness with God demands service. Jesus uses the image of a cup of wine—sweet and frothy at the top, with the dregs waiting at the bottom. What is “the dregs” you are going through right now? Ask the Lord to help you drain the cup.

Friday Morning Men’s Group Has Launched … There is Still Time to Join! Before COVID, our 6:30-7:45 am, twice-a-month group for discussion, prayer, and a light breakfast was doing well. But after an 18-month hiatus, the group gathered last Friday for the first of its twice-a-month meetings in Francis Hall at Resurrection. The launch pad for our dis-cussion is Sohrab Ahmari’s book, The Unbroken Thread: Discovering the Wisdom of Tradition in an Age of Chaos. Our next meeting is Friday, October 15. There is still time to join.

Catholicism 101 Has Also Begun … And, Yes, You Can Still Take Part On Tuesday nights at 7:00 pm, the general adult study of faith, Catholicism 101, has begun again. We’ll tackle topics great and small with plenty of time for questions. These sessions would be especially helpful for those who somehow missed Confirmation, who were raised in other Church traditions and want to understand the Catholic way, or who suspect good things might come from blow-ing the cobwebs off what they learned as kids. We will make this fun. Our next meeting is October 13.

To sign up for either of these groups, contact Fr. Mark at 715-842-4283 x 5000 or

[email protected].

Please be mindful of this engaged couple. We invite your prayers and good wishes for them as they

prepare to be married at Church of the Resurrection:

Diego Orozco and Emilie Hash will be married on October 23, 2021.

Congratulations to

Benjamin Luitjens and Abby Brown who were married on October 9, 2021,

at Church of the Resurrection.

Current COVID procedures at Sunday Masses at the Eastside Parishes Last updated September 22, 2021 Here’s a rundown of our current procedures at worship:

· With the (near) completion of the railings along the ramp on the McClellan Street entrance at Resurrection Church, all the doors to both churches are now open for the first time in eighteen months!

· For the unvaccinated, the continued wearing of face coverings and social distancing remain strongly recom-mended; with the Delta variant gaining steam, even those who have been vaccinated are encouraged to mask at Mass and at other parish events.

· Most of each church will be available for seating with two exceptions: first, the pews at the very front and the very back of each section will continue to have an empty “buffer” row (behind or ahead of it) for those who would welcome more space between them and others. And for the time being the 5:30 pm Mass at Resurrection will continue to require 6’ distancing and the wearing of masks by all.

· Taking the offering “passively” at the entrances of the church will continue for now.

· Sanitizing of “high-touch” areas (pew tops, door han-dles, etc.) will continue per CDC recommendations.

Stay tuned. Things change.

The presentation will be on Monday, October 25, at 6:30pm at St. Matthew Parish, Wausau, with Monsignor Robert P. Hundt of the Matrimonial Tribunal of our dio-cese. He will explain the teachings of the Catholic Church regarding annulments, provide information regarding what is involved in the process itself, and give guidance on filing a formal petition. The presentation is open to anyone who is divorced. For example, any Catholic who is thinking of applying for a possible declaration of nullity of a marriage, or a divorced non-Catholic person who is thinking of marrying a Catho-lic. Finally, anyone who would like some general enlight-enment on this topic for the purpose of possibly sharing with family and friends would also be welcome to attend.

The clergy are called to La Crosse— so no liturgies on Monday or Tuesday,

October 11 and 12.

Every fall Bishop Callahan calls his priests and deacons together for a little re-education. This year the event is Monday afternoon and Tuesday, October 11 and 12, in La Crosse. So, no Monday night Mass or Reconciliation or Tuesday 12:10 Mass or Adoration at Resurrection this week.

EUCHARISTIC ACCLAMATION Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

MYSTERY OF FAITH

When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil... and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
