Art NationSunday,17 April 2011

This week on Art Nation Fenella Kernebone is exploring the latest trends in Australian fashion and design and the identities behind the scenes.

Tracing the historical roots of street fashion photography to current day influences, Fenella hits the streets with Xiaohan Shen, one of Sydney's top street photographers, and asks why people are looking less to glossy magazines for inspiration and more to the stylish individuals on the street.

Australian men and fashion haven't always been the best of friends. But in recent years an increasing awareness of style and sophistication has crept into the wardrobes of gents. Art Nation checks out the collections of some of Australia's most exciting young menswear designers, including Jack London and Claude Maus.

Namila Benson is off looking at the rise of eco-fashion in an industry that is notorious for waste and environmentally unsound practices. She meets Kylie Zerbest from Obus and Georgia McCorkill, two designers who create garments that are both striking and sustainable.

When it comes to accessories, The House of Baulch is the embodiment of glamour. Designer Kathryn Baulch's jewellery is not for the faint hearted and her dynamic and colourful designs have made her one of Australia's hottest jewellers.

Art Nation also looks back at the work of Bruno Benini, one of Australia's most prolific fashion photographers, whose career spanned more than 30 years. His gorgeous images capture the chic of the 1950s and 60s and the sexiness of the 70s.

Art Nation will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, April 17 at 9:35pm

Chris Humfrey's Wild LifeSunday,17 April 2011

Meet Chris Humfrey, a zoologist who lives with his young family and their REALLY big dog in an idyllic bush haven in country Victoria. But the Humfreys also share their home with a few other pets - more than 2000 and each one of them needs care and attention 24/7. This isn't your average family home. It's a private zoo where human and animal sagas unfold on a daily basis. Follow Chris in this chaotic, animal-crazy series that captures the drama, the danger, the animal antics and the sheer exhilaration of Chris Humfrey's Wild Life. Every day, a new saga unfolds at the zoo.

This week at the zoo Chris is suffering from eye troubles attributed to stress, so following doctor's orders, heads to the Western McDonnell Ranges, in central Australia, for a week's break. But if Nicole and the kids were expecting a relaxing vacation, they're going to be disappointed. Chris, unable to sit still, ends up tangling with some of Australia's most dangerous creatures. Meanwhile, back at the zoo, the staff cope with looking after the 2000 animals and 10 children who arrive for Junior-Zoo-Keeper Day. Needless to say, managing children and dangerous animals can be tricky.

Human Planet: Oceans: Into the BlueSunday,17 April 2011

Some people understand the seas in a way modern science cannot comprehend. Yet this understanding has stemmed from extreme isolation and the ability of communities to exist on even the smallest land masses and to harvest bounty that can be seen below the waves or beyond the horizon.

On the island of Lembata in Indonesia the fishermen of Lamalera continue to hunt 75ft sperm whales by leaping from their boats onto the whale's back armed only with a harpoon. It's fraught with danger, a real Moby Dick scenario, but a single whale provides for the whole village.

A speck in the Pacific Ocean, Anuta is less than half a mile wide and over 70 miles from its nearest neighbour. Fish and yams make up the people's diet, but once or twice a year when the trade winds change direction they sail across treacherous seas to reach the rocky island of Fatutaka, where hundreds of sea birds are harvested. Special, sacred outriggers are used for this journey, and the birds are captured using a traditional long pole and noose. For the fishermen isolated in this ocean the risk to life and limb is very real.

Paper Giants: The Birth of CleoSunday,17 April 2011 New Series

In early 1972, 30-year-old journalist and editor, Ita Buttrose (Asher Keddie) and 35-year-old Kerry Packer (Rob Carlton), heir to what was then Australia's most ruthlessly powerful and influential publishing family, got together to create a magazine that became one of the most dramatic sensations in Australian publishing history. CLEO went on to help define women, Australia and the relationship between the two.

Research and marketing analysis showed the project would be a failure and the magazine was vehemently opposed by the powerful head of the Packer clan, the domineering Sir Frank Packer (Tony Barry) (known to his employees as 'God'), yet Ita and Kerry, knowing the consequences of failure would be dire, decided to back their gut instincts anyway.

With courage and a stubborn belief in each other the odd couple went for it, and the result was a magazine that not only surfed the emerging 70s zeitgeist, but led the way in articulating for women a new way of thinking about themselves and their place in cultural Australia. Women readers found in CLEO a manifesto for a new confidence and an argument against the entrenched patriarchy that had for too long defined the relationship between the sexes. Filled with intelligence, wit and a 'go for it' attitude, the fledgling CLEO took off on its first issue, taking Kerry, Ita, and a hand-picked bunch of iconoclastic staffers along for the ride.

CLEO was a women's magazine with a libido and a curiosity about almost everything…

Paper Giants: The Birth of CleoMonday,18 April 2011 Final

With CLEO magazine a hit, Ita (Asher Keddie) faces the challenge of maintaining its fresh and challenging perspective issue after issue.

With his father ill and bears circling to take hold of the Packer empire, Kerry (Rob Carlton) must take a leap of faith to secure his bid for the crown.

Part two concludes with ultimate triumph for Ita, Kerry and Ita's select band of young women staffers who combined to create the cutting edge magazine sensation that was the 70s CLEO magazine.

With his father dead and his grip on the family empire firmly established Kerry selects Ita for greater things.

Set against the backdrop of the dramatic downfall of the Whitlam government, part two of Paper Giants: The Birth Of Cleo sees Ita and Kerry fulfilling their destinies. After Whitlam and CLEO, Australia is now a different place.

Paper Giants: The Birth Of Cleo also stars Tony Barry, Matt Day, Jessica Tovey, Ian Meadows, Maeve Dermody, Annie Maynard, Cheree Cassidy, Octavia Barron-Martin and Olivia Pigeot.

Stephen Fry and the Great American Oil SpillTuesday,19 April 2011

Four months after the BP oil spill - the worst ecological disaster in American history - Stephen Fry visits the Deep South to see the impact on the people, the wildlife and the area.

In 2009, Fry visited a number of fishing communities in the southern states of the USA, the very communities that were hit by the BP oil spill some months later.

Now in this warm and personal film, along with his environmental partner Mark Cawardine, he goes back to explore the impact of the world's most notorious environmental disaster on these communities, the wildlife - and himself.

This oil spill, the worst in US history, has covered hundreds of miles of shoreline in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, and has washed up on the coast of Florida with thousands of gallons of oil. Many are calling it an 'environmental apocalypse' predicting the wholesale slaughter of marine mammals, fish and birds.

In total over 400 species are believed to be at risk, and that's just the ones we can see - there are thousands of sea floor dwelling marine animals which will be affected once the oil sinks.

Besides meeting the fishing communities, Stephen and Mark get involved in the conservation effort, meet those responsible for the Herculean task of cleaning this mess up and question what can be done in the future to prevent such a catastrophe from happening again.

Stephen and Mark's journey is undoubtedly difficult, at times moving, but their story is one of warmth, humour and hope, in the face of overwhelming odds.

Girls' Own War StoriesThursday,21 April 2011

Girls’ Own War Stories are the personal recollections of a small group of Australian women and how the Second World War changed their lives forever. Each of these women experienced new opportunities and new challenges as a result of the war, and in doing so, learned to stand on their own two feet.

In 1939, most young women's expectations were limited to spending life looking after their men and children. They accepted that they got paid less than men if they worked - they accepted that men were more important. They believed in a life of duty, responsibility and care.

But the war and women's war - related work changed all that. Some took up the challenge to help their country in roles they had never considered or tackled before - as cipher operators, factory workers, code breakers, or searchlight girls - while others struggled at home to support their families. War was seen as either a glamorous, exciting adventure, or something to be endured with drudgery and loneliness.

For everyone, the war became increasingly frightening as the enemy drew closer, and all breathed a sigh of relief when the Americans arrived. However, the Yanks were a mixed blessing - bringing not only fighting power and a huge consumer demand, but also causing social and sexual upheaval. This new morality caused personal dilemmas for women of all ages and backgrounds.

As the war began to wind down and the men began to come home, they expected a return to the old ways where women were compliant and dutiful. But women had changed, a sense of working for the good of the country and helping each other had given them a new vision for their lives and they were not giving that up.

The Second World War became the greatest social catalyst ever for Australian women. It was these women - those who worked for the war effort, and those who kept the home fires burning - who helped lay the foundations for the making of a new outward-looking Australia. Their stories will change the way we think about women, men, and war in the twentieth century.

Compass: Good Friday SpecialFriday,22 April 2011

This Good Friday, Compass goes to Ernabella, a remote Aboriginal community south-west of Alice Springs, as it prepares for Easter in its newly renovated church…

Ernabella Mission lies in the far north-west corner of South Australia. It was established in 1937 by the Presbyterian Church and right from the start it was different from other missions of its day. There was no pressure on the Anangu to give up their own beliefs or way of life.

"We weren't even allowed to put clothes on them," recalls one former missionary. Instead they respected and learnt the local language and culture, and found parallels with Anangu stories and the Old and New Testament.

They also established a choir for which Ernabella became famous.

Today Ernabella is an Aboriginal-run community with a rich cultural heritage. Three of the elders who helped build the church almost 60 years ago still live in the community; and two of them are ordained Uniting Church ministers.

In this Good Friday Special, Compass tells the story of a unique mission and the renovation of its historic church through the eyes of the Anangu and former missionaries.

The New InventorsHosted by James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors presents a special night of musical madness! Join us for the latest and wildest creations from the world of music.

Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: designer Alison Page, eco-designer Leyla Acaroglu, and special guest, INXS guitarist Kirk Pengilly.

Inventions featured on the program:

CONTRAMONSTER AND THE LIGHT HARP - by inventors Joanne Cannon and Stuart Favilla from VIC

Joanne and Stuart are partners and experimental musicians. Joanne is one of Australia's leading bassoonists and Stuart specialises in synthesiser performance, having been recognised for the innovations he has contributed to the field of computer music. Not content with ordinary instruments, Joanne and Stuart have created a number of unique instruments that push the boundaries between acoustic and electronic.

The ContraMonster is an augmented acoustic wind instrument, designed by Joanne and based on a bassoon. Instead of open holes, the instrument has pickup microphones and three pressure sensors plus a joystick controller for each hand, allowing up to ten independent channels of data to be sent to a computer for processing and effects control. The Light Harp, designed by Stuart, incorporates 32 narrow light beams and sensors to trace virtual ‘strings’ through space. The sounds are created by breaking the beam of light with your fingers, either in mid air or by playing the holes on the fret board.

FAMP - by inventors Tim Brennan and Jason Gendrolius from QLD

If you're taking an amp on tour don't be surprised when you get hit with hefty excess baggage charges. Musos need an alternative to heavy amp and speaker systems, without compromising on sound quality. Self-taught guitar builder and repairer Tim Brennan, along with custom transit-case maker and former roller skate ring attendant Jason Gendrolius, have crafted a solution to this problem plaguing the lives of guitar-wielding rockers.

The FAMP is an amp and speaker combination in a high density foam cabinet. There's a 60 Watt speaker inside for plenty of power, but the unit weighs only 9kg, and is durable and easy to lift. And as a special treat, guest judge Kirk of INXS, a man who knows guitar amps, will give the FAMP a test run live in the studio.

SOLAR POWERED SLIDE DIDGERIDOO – by inventor Michael Jones from NSW

When people are bustling down busy streets it can be hard to get their attention, but for Michael, who lives entirely off busking, it's crucial. Around five years ago he decided to become a poet, quit his job, and get a trailer, and has been travelling around the country busking and playing at music and folk festivals ever since.

He invented the Solar Powered Slide Pedal Didgeridoo, a solar powered amp and a foot pedal-controlled slide didgeridoo. It all fits into a neat buggy that can be towed with a BMX.

Catalyst

CyberchondriaMore and more people are turning to the internet for medical advice. Experts say it's a serious issue for doctors trying to manage their patients' wellbeing. Some patients may be under the impression that their symptoms are not serious and delay vital medical treatment. Others may be led to think a minor condition is terminal. Maryanne Demasi investigates whether web-based medical information is a good thing - or a recipe for ill health.

Road Kill RescueUnfortunately, dead wildlife on the side of the road has become part of the Australian landscape. It's a road toll we seem to take for granted - just part of getting from A to B. But in a wildlife-rich state like Tasmania, road kill density is the highest in the world. Mark Horstman hitches a ride with a citizen scientist determined to establish exactly how drivers can make a difference.

Cat LapHow does a cat drink? You might think you know, but stunning new research shows most of us have been completely wrong. Super high speed cameras reveal to Jonica Newby the exquisite and unexpected beauty of what the cat actually does with its tongue.

Kitchen ScienceAll cooking involves science, but progressive chefs are now combining science-based techniques and culinary knowhow to create surprising texture and flavour combinations that engage the senses and excite the taste buds. Tanya Ha explores the chemical and physical changes that take place when cooking steak and eggs, and in creating little parcels of flavour by spherification.

Chocolate TreesYou've probably heard of peak oil, possibly of peak phosphate - but peak chocolate? Could the world supply of chocolate be under threat? As demand grows, chocolate companies are trying to unlock the genetic secrets of the cacao tree as a means to ensure the supply of high quality chocolate.

Remote LabIn the future, students will be able to perform many science experiments from the comfort of their own home and in their own time. Paul Willis visits the sharelab at University of Technology Sydney, where engineering students are remotely operating eight experimental rigs.
