-Mike Woodard I can’t re-member ever meeting a more impressive young man than Tusca-loosa’s “Bronze Bomber” Deontay Wilder, the only US boxing team member to win a medal in the 2008 Bejing Olympics. Deontay is a big man in many ways. Physically he around 6’ 7”, which makes him a towering figure.
Having won the Bronze medal in the heavy weight boxing division of the 2008 Olympics makes him big in another. But, if you ever get the chance to meet him in person, Deontay is bigger in another way...he’s a very inspirational figure of a man and that’s what makes him bigger than in any other way. Deontay walked into Jay Deas gym in Northport one day on a dare from a friend. He had played in many sports: football, baseball, and basketball. That day was only three years ago. Perhaps never in history has anyone gone from not being in a sport at all to representing the United States as the top seed in that sport in a period of only two years. Jay Deas, who has now coached Deontay all the way through the 2008 Olympics and hopes to coach him to be the heavy weight champion of the world, immediately recognized that Deontay
was a competitor. “He worked out just as hard when I wasn’t watching him as when I was watching him. I wasn’t ac-customed to having a boxer who worked so hard.” Deas said. Two weeks after his first sessions with Deas, Deontay fought his first fight against a pro fighter and knocked him out in 17 seconds. That professional fighter told Deas, “Whatever you do, don’t let him get out of boxing. He’s the real deal.” Two years later Deontay had worked his way through the preliminary fights to get on the US Boxing team for the 2008 Olympics. “At every level there was someone there to tell us that Deon-tay didn’t have enough experience to make the cut. We’d move up to the next level, and there’d be someone else telling us the same thing all over again.” Deas said. The truth was that Deontay was the least experienced boxer to ever make the US Olympic team. But, he did. Deontay has a simple explana-tion for why he’s been so successful at boxing. “I deserve my success because I work so hard to get it. I have a fight in me to succeed. If I wasn’t a boxer I’d be working just as hard at something else and never giving up on that.” Deontay has traveled now across the state, nation, and world, and always he takes a message with him. Deontay speaks to school children, prisoners, and to people at the numerous events he is invited to visit and speak. I met him when he spoke at the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club. His message is of determination. “The easiest thing in the world to do is give up. Whatever you do, never give up.” Deontay says. “I have friends I grew up with
and we all had big dreams, but I reached mine and they haven’t. I made it because I went the extra mile. I’ll tell you, there is no better feeling than having my state and my home town proud of what I’ve accomplished. For my next accomplish-ment, I’m going to become the next heavyweight champion of the world.” For a moment there, I thought I had heard Mohammad Ali speaking. Deontay knows how to pour on the confidence. And he always has a big happy smile to go with it. Deontay Wilder is a family man as well. “I do what I do for my daughter. She’s my inspiration. She may be three years old, but I learn a lot from her. She’s as determined as I am.” Deontay also credits his faith with keeping him on track with his life. “As long as I continue to do right, God will keep me on the right path. I love to share my experiences. Everybody isn’t born with a silver spoon, and they need people to talk to them to inspire them. I enjoy helping other people. I do what I can do, and say what I can say, to help make the world a better place.” Deontay’s promotion company is Golden Boy Productions. He will fight in Columbus, MS on March 6th and is in negotiations to fight on February 14. De-ontay is on his way to fighting for the heavy weight championship of the world someday. I can feel it. In all my years of interviewing people who have or are making some-thing of themselves in Tuscaloosa, AL, I’ve never met a man more inspirational and devoted than Deontay Wilder. I hope he gets that big belt someday, but either way, he’s a mightly big man.

This concert is to honor the life, leg-acy, and dreams of Rev. Martin Luther King. Guest speaker will be Dr. Clayborne Carson, Director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute. Seven Choirs will perform: Prentice, Shelton, Stillman, University Singers, Tuscaloosa Middle School, UA Afro American Gospel, and the University Chorus. The event is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm.

EDITOR’S COMMENTS…
Since the new president, Obama, is going into office this week, I thought I take this space to write about him. Otherwise I might have the only publication in America to not recognize this historic event! Obama will be the first black, well half black, American president in history. They call him “African American”, which I think is a terrible thing to say because with true equality, everyone is supposed to be simply...an American. “White” people are not English, Scottish, or German Ameri-can’s...simply Americans. Why it is alright to use another continent beside north America to describe an American citizen is a mystery to me. It took a lot of white people to elect Obama. The United States has a 17% black American population. Last time I checked, you can’t win an popular election with 17%. Black people can’t claim they elected Obama. Obama was elected not because of his race, but because the major-ity of American’s, of all races and sexes, believed he was the right person to occupy the position of president. I am certainly no racist. I don’t agree with racism from white peo-ple, from black people, and if there were purple people, I’d be against ra-cism toward or from them. There is a certain word...it’s now called the “N” word because it is racist for a white person to say it. However, I hear black people saying it on a regular basis to one another. Therefore, it has become an illegal word, ac-cording to some, for white people to use the word, but it’s OK for black peo-ple to use it. I belive that is a continuation of racism. In reverse. It’s either OK to use that word or it’s not! Now, what has Obama got to do with that? This is the dawning of a new era. One in which it is not alright for anyone, black or white, to be rac-ist. If a black man can be my president, and I’m a white man, I’ll owe my allegiance to him...and then I don’t want to be discriminated against. Racial discrimination is dead...over. Any claims to it by any party in order to seek advantage over the other should be met with resistance from this point forward. No excuses. A black man can be president...and that’s something I’ve never done myself. A black man has risen to the level that only 42 white men have risen to in the entire history of this nation. Racism, and discrimination….as far as expecting political correct-ness...should be history. If they aren’t...now white people are going to have a claim to discrimination. It’s the dawning of a new era and everybody needs to get accustomed to it, everybody….now. I believe Obama has the ability to be a great president, and he is faced with the most difficult situation of any president in generations. To me he is not an African American president, he is the president of the United States. He is not a black man, he is simply a man. I am not a white man, I am simply a man. Can we move on from color and race and get to work making this a better nation? Can we quit trying to make amends for our forefathers and start WORKING together to make this a better nation for everyone? Well, here’s our chance. Now we’re all the same color. I had gotten mighty tired of that old argument a long time ago anyway. The volume of people’s skin pigmentation is a pretty stupid thing to “posture” about any-way if you think about it. Good fortune and God Speed to President Obama. Mike Woodard, Publisher Tuscaloosa Sun

KIDS CORNER
JANUARY West Alabama Gardening
- With Candy Taylor - Herbs & Vegetables. You can begin planting indoors for certain varieties which will be transplanted in 6 to 8 weeks. We are right on the edge of an area in which you can risk planting cabbage, Chinese cabbage and broccoli in around 8 weeks. This terribly cold spell we’re having now is just a good time to stay indoors, or you can plant if you have a green house. The costs of heating it on these 15 degree nights may set you back a little. You can start planting Asparagus crowns in February, as long as each time they emerge you cover them with another inch or so of soil. If you are growing indoors fertilize when the first true leaves emerge. If we have some warmer days you can plan some “air gardening” areas, which utilizes the air space above the ground, giving you more space to grow things. This is called vertical gardening. Poles, trellises, nets, and strings can be erected now in preparation of spring planting.

Sleep. It refreshes, rejuvenates and restores. Though our bodies are, for the most part, quiet during sleep, there is actually a bustle of ac-tivity going on inside us. Getting baby to sleep and having your baby on a regular sleep schedule is so important, that it is worth exploring and dis-cussing. Not only is a proper and regular sleep schedule vitally important for your baby’s health, it also improves mood, function and physical de-velopment. Here are five major benefits that regular and sound sleep offer your child: 1. It helps your baby grow strong and develop quick reactions and coor-dination: studies show that babies who get regular sleep have improved reaction time, better reflexes and even better use of oxygen. 2. It helps keep baby’s mood even and happy: obviously, babies get cranky and cry longer and more often when they are tired, and if they are sleep deprived, or on an irregular schedule, they can be very challenging to deal with. 3. It helps with memory function and development: Dr. Nilesh Dave, medical director of the Sleep Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center says "During sleep, your brain will process a lot and turn it into long-term memory," he says. "Memory is a function of what we think sleep does." 4. It keeps baby from falling asleep at times that are not part of the planned schedule: I’m sure every parent has experienced times when their baby fell asleep in the car, or while out somewhere, only to have the baby wake up irritable and still tired. If a baby is well rested, and if the parents plan their activities to accommodate baby’s established sleep schedule, then more often than not, the baby will stay awake in the car, etc, because it’s during the established non - sleep time. 5. It keeps baby’s hormones balanced: Our bodies use sleep to release certain hormones, Dr. Davé says, including those essential for growth and development. So, if sleep is so important, how do you ensure that your baby gets enough sleep? Getting baby to sleep does not have to be difficult. Here are some basics that might help: 1. Establish a bedtime routine: This helps your baby settle down, (and helps adults wind down after a long day as well). Allocate about thirty minutes before baby’s bedtime to soothe and relax your child. Read, sing or play lullabies, or just sit quietly in a rocking chair, holding your baby. 2. Only put your baby down when it’s time for sleep: Using the baby’s bed for anything other than sleep gives the child confusing messages about what the bed/ or bedtime really means. If it is clear to the baby that the bed is for sleeping, the chances of the baby settling down are better. 3. Make the baby’s bedroom dark, comfortable and quiet: limit distrac-tions. 4. Don’t play actively with your baby before bedtime: this can over stimulate the baby and make it more difficult to calm down in time for the scheduled bedtime. 5. Stick with the schedule: babies very easily can get off schedule, and it can play havoc with their mood and with their health. 6. Calm and soothe yourself and your baby: take some deep breaths. Your baby will pick up on your own relaxed state and this will help you both get quiet and peaceful. 7. Know when to seek help: talk to your baby’s pediatrician for more ideas for establishing a regular sleep schedule for your baby.
Getting baby to sleep and on a regular sleep schedule is impor-tant for the baby’s parents as well, for all of the above reasons. Everyone benefits from a regular sleep schedule!

When it comes to women and fashion, there is a lot of history involved, yet over time world designers have al-ways been able to create a little something for all occasion and time. With the passing of time, the clothes have taken different forms of hues and shimmers. With a vibrant look in style for every season, fashion is not just something left for the Stars. You at home can very easily afford to have the glam look. But today, we will take a look at some of the most necessary item of clothing important for every
wardrobe. Sports Bra: We can’t imagine how life would have worked without an authentic pair of these. Although there is no clear idea as to who invented this bra, there is a lot of gratefulness for it. The purpose of a sports bra is to allow women the ability to play any kind of sports they please or just wear them for a good session of workout. This wear has not only allowed women to freely mingle with the treadmill in a gym with mixed genders, it has simply made it easier for females to become good athletes – there is no boob – factor getting in the way. Most of us would remember the dramatic rip of Brandi Chastain’s shirt with the sports bra peeking through it right after she scores the win-ning goal in the China vs US soccer game. It was a black sports bra and pretty much won the symbolic moment towards a woman - power mode. Although many consider this to be controversial I guess most men were just assuming more like hoping that a corset with garter belts would pop out instead! Blue Jeans: It doesn’t matter if everyone has a pair, this is probably the only item of clothes that you were and not feel shocked having someone down the street wear the exact same thing. Jeans is a garment that has improved and keeps evolving all the time. Although, they started out with the purpose to be comfortable clothes for minors and farmers, they have gone up the social ladder where designers would spend years and their entire fashion line to work with just jeans. They are easy to slip into, can be worn with practically anything, from designer tops, T-shirts, shirts, with high heels, flats or boots, and they can be worn to your average park, to school, work place and even an evening out in a grand places (just switch the top to something fancy). There are several styles of jeans from boot cut, fitted, tailored or low-slung, then there is the high-waist to bell bottoms, or whatever you call it. Little Black Dresses: Inspired by Coco Chanel and made into the ulti-mate staple fashion by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's this is just another must have in your closet. Here’s why – they look good on anybody and it doesn’t matter what body type you happen to be, the black material always works wonders. Another fact is that the dress is simple, classy and can be gorgeous with the smallest of ornament adorned around it.

In order to be prepared for an economic downturn you are supposed to have put aside a considerable amount of money, in cash or near cash reserves, to help you through a tough time. It’s like a squirrel storing nuts for the long cold winter. But few Americans, and certainly not our government, did this and are therefore in the position of having a tough time, going broke, or having to borrow money to get through a tough spot. Many will be fortunate enough to have stable situations, especially governmental or medical care jobs, and won’t ever have to face a difficult time as a result of an economic downturn like the rest of us. Remember when Clinton had the federal government running a sur-plus in 1998 and the federal government was paying down the national debt? Do you also remember George W. Bush running for president in 1999 with the message…”That’s YOUR money and I’m going to cut taxes so you can keep it?”….well, that was when the government, and the people, by voting that man into office, decided that, no matter how good things got, they were not going to let our government put aside any money, not a dime, for a rainy day. Now...it’s raining. There’s a lot of complaining about Obama and his plan to start spending copious amount of money to help revive the economy. He’s just doing what the squirrels do when times get tough...eating the stored sup-plies. Only difference is, Bush, with the assistance and insistence of the American people, didn’t put aside one dime for a rainy day. However, ask any hungry squirrel and they’ll tell you...they don’t want to just lay down and starve to death. And, Obama, and the American people should be careful telling Obama to stop feeding the economy the same as would have been done if we had all been smart enough to put aside some money for a rainy day. For most folks this economic situation caught them flatfooted. It hap-pened so fast that they didn’t have any time to prepare for it, and, instead of preparing for it they had been doing stupid stuff which actually put them in a very unprepared condition. Some people actually borrowed 100%, or more, of the maximum highest value that their homes achieved in the best of times. A home is a roof over your head, not a piggy bank. People used their homes for piggy banks and pulled all the money out...and now wonder if the mort-gage companies will come kick them out of it. They didn’t put aside one red dime, just like their government. The proverbial grasshopper fiddling every-thing away, while the Industrious ants built their home. So who is ready for this downturn? A handful of folks who lived within their means, or those who took unfair shares from the rest of us. Those best prepared to buy up the distressed bargains from other’s miser-ies? Those who stole billions and caused the economic meltdown. Yes Dad….I do remember you saying, “Life ain’t fair.”

"For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith (1st John, 5:4, KJV)." This is an astounding verse, for it tells us that by our faith we have the power to overcome anything that the world hurls at us. It is not just any faith, however, but the faith that we have in God, and in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, which allows us to overcome the world. It is my opinion, tho shared by many, that John, above all the other disciples, had an understanding of the spirituality of Christ, and of the power enveloped in that spirituality. This verse bears out that belief, as do many others of John’s. Let’s look at the entire passage from which the one verse, above, was extracted: "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father (God) loves his child (Jesus Christ) as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God (1st John 5:1-5, NIV)." Notice that we prove not only our love of God by carrying out His commands, but also our love of his children. The same proof for each. If we love God, and carry out His commands, we will naturally, like an immutable law of physics, love His children! In other words, we cannot love God and carry out His commandments without loving His children as well. But now, what does John mean when he says "everyone born of God overcomes the world"? If you believe, as the prosperity “gospel” preachers on television wish us to believe, that this means you’re going to triumph in every wish and desire of your life, then you are missing the boat entirely. No, we overcome the world by virtue of the fact that no matter what adversity, hardship, pain or loss we suffer, Christ is there with us, even unto death. Yes, even in death we overcome the world, for in death we are born to new life! The power in these verses is this: That nothing that is in or of the world can defeat us - ever. Our only defeats come when we allow them. This does not mean that we are not going to suffer the disappointments and heartaches of life; but that the Lord is with us through it all, allowing us to overcome all life’s adversities and adversaries. What an awesome thought! Better still, what an awesome reality for the Believer - for the children of God! "Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God." Yours in Christ, Tom

My friend John had never hunted deer in Kentucky even though he lived just across the state line. I was taking him the next morning to a place where I knew he would at least see a doe. He had two tags in his pocket for bow season. The night before, he had packed his truck, got his non-resident license online, and had went to bed early enough to get a good night’s sleep. He knew that I hate being late so he was sure to get everything in order before dawn. That morning he arrived at my house and unloaded his gear into my truck. After a brief stop at Hardee’s, we were on our way. I really had no desire to hunt that day. I was more interested in John. He had only started deer hunting a few years ago, and didn’t have very many under his belt. This would be a good time for him to sling an arrow at anything that came by. After a twelve mile drive, we arrived in plenty of time before daylight. It was actually too early. We were able to sit in the truck about fifteen minutes as I gave him instructions about the travel patterns of the deer that he might see. It was time. We eased out of my vehicle so he could gather his stuff for the short walk to the stand. He put his boots on, grabbed his backpack and then discov-ered that he had forgotten to transfer his bow case from his truck to mine. There we were, twelve miles from home and no weapon; and no time to go get it and get back in time for the morning hunt. John was crushed and embar-rassed. I was ready to thump his head! Not because I was mad at him, but because I so wanted him to kill a deer and he had forgotten the thing that was most impor-tant. I think of many of you who read this column each week. I truly consider you my friends. You have a good job, family, and are enjoying spending as much time as you can hunting or fishing. But when you look at your own spiritual life, you have forgotten the most important thing……… and that is your preparation for death. Death IS the only surety in life and yet many people just don’t want to think about it, imagining that if they just don’t think about it, it won’t happen. Why not stop today and make sure that you are ready for your greatest adventure. You sure don’t want to arrive before God one day and realize that you forgot the most important thing – a ticket to get in. If I can help, let me know.

Bama basketball is looking pretty good at 14-4 so far this season. This Sat-urday’s game against Auburn, at Auburn at 1:30 pm, should provide a clearer pic-ture of how Bama will finish out the sea-son. Having laid LSU to rest, the Tide will now face a series of SEC competi-tors. Thus far the schedule has been a little on the light side, but the Auburn game will be followed by Mississippi,
Kentucky, Arkansas, Georgia, Vander-bilt, LSU, South Carolina, and Flor-ida….all SEC contenders. Bama man-handled LSU in the SEC opener with a final 65-59 score. Bama’s had a long dry spell, so the Tide nation is anxious for an SEC Championship. Coach Mark Gottfried needs a convincing and winning season to uphold his pledges to take Bama back to the top.
Tide Quiz: Former Alabama head coach Frank Thomas was a quarterback under which famous college coach? A: Knut Rockne at Notre Dame.

In a surprise announcement, Tal-ladega has reduced their seat prices for the 2009 season to $40 each for seats that were, in 2008, $70 to $75. This is a response to reduced attendance at NAS-CAR races nationwide and last year at Talladega. I went to the last race and was surprised to see the Allisan stands only fill to about half capacity. Hopefully the new lower prices, along with lower gas
prices, will encourage NASCAR fans to come out. The first race of the season is, as always, the Daytona 500. It will be held on February 15. The first race at Talladega will be held April 25th. I know a lot of us NAS-CAR fans can’t wait until February 15 to hear those fateful words…”Gentlemen, start your engines!”
