EDITOR’S COMMENTS...

Tuscaloosa’s7-Day

Forcast

May 15-21

Which US city has the most cloudy

days?

My mind wanders a lot. I think about inventions, things that aren’t that could be...a lot of the time. I’ve thought of new product ideas, but then thought, surely I’m not the fi rst to think of it. In this way I keep myself in my “rightful place”...surely I’m not as smart or creative as others. But recently a couple of new ideas came to mind and I knew I’d never seen devices of the sort I conjured up in my mind...so I went online to search for products that would do what I dreamed of. I didn’t fi nd them. So I went on the internet and searched for patents for the products. I just knew that, even if the products weren’t available yet that surely someone had already thought them up and owned the rights to the ideas. But I didn’t fi nd patents for these ideas. I got on the governments website and learned how to apply for a patent...and that’s when the money problem arrived. It would take thousands, probably ten thousand dollars, to pursue a patent on just one idea. I fi led a provisional patent, which protects my rights for one year while I fi gure out if I really want to spend the big bucks to get a patent on a product I can’t prove will be a success. I imagine we all have original ideas from time to time, and usually don’t know it. And of them only a few would have true marketable value. After running 11 different business enterprises in my life, I know what it’s like to oper-ate in a down economy, without enough capital, against an overwhelmingly rich competitor, and to face thousands of problems that stand in the way of success in business endeavors. As a young man I thought that surely someday one of my ideas or business ventures would be the one that hit a homerun...outta that park, and put me on easy street. But, it’s never happened. After 11 times...it would be easy to lose hope. Hope is easy to lose. I mean, if you put your savings, thousands of hours of hard labor, years of education and experience...on the line 11 times and never get past 1st base...it can be discouraging! But...1st base ain’t all bad. It’s in the game. And here I am, later in life, still dreaming. Still hoping beyond hope. And why? For a pile of bucks that really won’t improve my life? No...I don’t care as much for recognition from society as I do that which lies within me. I’ve always felt and believed I have special talents, wanted to believe it anyway, and I want to prove to myself I can compete. Yeah, the money would be nice, maybe folks giving me recognition would be too...but mostly I’ve fought this fi ght all my life to prove me to me. So here I go again. Ready to roll those dice again because...that’s just what I do. That’s who and what I am. I worry every time, but life wouldn’t be worth the muster if I didn’t take risks...and risks involve failure. I’ve risked retirement against working til I’m dead. I’ll risk peace and complacency against worry and dog tired. I’ll put security up against unknown glory. It’s always out there isn’t it. That golden ring. That pinnacle of achievement. We reach for it because it’s what champions must do. We may not win, but we reach for it anyway. For me it’s the stuff life’s made of and life is made of hopes and dreams. Never give up on your dreams. My father told me the dream was usually better than the reality. It’s the mystery of not knowing if you’ll get there, the struggle on your way to that moun-tain top...that’s better, sometimes, than actually getting there. So, hold on tight to your dreams. FOOT NOTESNAIL PROBLEMS: With summer weather here we are getting out

of the house and shoes become a necessity. Remember shoes worn too short can cause

nail problems. Flip flops and sandals are cooling and comfy but make sure they have an arch built in.

Salon visits should not be substituted for professional care. Nail problems should be

treated by a Podiatrist. Thick mycotic nail pain, is a covered service by insurancePolish is great for health nails and today’s choices are endless. Make

sure however, to remove polish regularly, using non-acetone nail polishes remover. If you suffer from thick discolored toenails, this could be a sign of a fungal or circulatory condition. In this case do not apply polish since it can lock out moisture and keep the nail bed from “breathing”. Once you work with your podiatrist to treat the underlying condition causing your

infection, it will be safe to paint the nails again. If you have Diabetes or poor circulation in your feet, consult us and we can recommend a

treatment program for you. We warn any patient having the above problems not to have a salon pedicure. It is best to seek professional

care in a podiatrists office. We can help with any type nail problem.

MAYWest Alabama Gardening

- With Candy Taylor - Roses. Roses need a lot of water. As long as they get 1 to 2 inches of rainfall per week you don’t need to water them...but that is a large amount of rainfall. To give you an idea...it’s about 5 gallons for the footprint area of a mature rose plant per week. A lot! If you will water your roses suffi ciently they will produce a lot more blooms. According to the soil they are planted in you can water the 5 gallons once per week and your fi ne, but is the soil is absorption resistant, as in soil with a lot of clay, you’d probably do better to water twice per week around 3 gallons per time. Also, don’t water the leaves of rose bushes. Just water around the base of the plant. Watering the leaves increases the chance of disease and pests. New plants can be helped by creating a berm around the base of the plant to hold the water close to the stem rather than letting it run off. This time of year pests are on the increase. So you should be on the lookout for them. Spider mites, Aphids, and fl ower thrips should be treated with Neem Oil (Brown’s has this). Leaves attacked by blackspot or powdery mildew should be removed and dis-carded. It helps minimize pests to clean up around the bases of the bush by picking up leaves, old blooms, etc.

Children’s Corner If there is one word that is most common to most toddlers it is this: “Mine!” In a toddler’s little world, the world is all about them. With this in mind, it becomes pretty clear and easy to understand why sharing with others does not come naturally to them. When teaching your child to share, it is important to fi rst realize that it is not productive to force your toddler to share. Instead, work to create an environment of sharing in order to encourage sharing. It is important to realize that to toddlers, a toy is so much more than a toy; it is a valued possession that must be protected. While teach-ing sharing, respect the normal level of possessiveness while encouraging the attitude of sharing with another. Below are a few examples of tips to utilize when helping your toddler to learn to share. They are just a few of many options that may work for your child.Teaching Sharing Tip #1: Model Generosity and “Sharing” It is true what they say that children learn what they see, not from what you say. Model generosity and sharing in your own life and comment to your child on how nice it is.Teaching Sharing Tip #2: Stay Involved Toddlers who feel connected to their parents have an easier time sharing their toys since their security is wrapped up within their parent. A child who feels secure inside is more apt to share their most prized possessions with others since their value is found outside of a material toy.Teaching Sharing Tip #3: Make It a Game! Practice sharing with your young child by setting up situations where they can share. Give them some cookies and ask them to share with everyone in the room or come up with another scenario you can develop that can help your child learn the value of sharing.Teaching Sharing Tip #4: Avoid Stepping In Immediately While it’s easy to step in and make sure our toddler shares while playing with another, it is important to consider the necessity of allowing the toddlers to fi rst work out the situation themselves. See if they’re able to work it out and if not, step in and explain how to share.Teaching Sharing Tip #5: Try a Timer If your child is having a diffi cult time learning to share, try using a timer. Set a timer and say, “You can play with the toys for 5 minutes. When 5 minutes is up the timer will ring and then it’s Johnny’s turn”. This helps the child not only learn how to share, but learn valuable lessons such as taking turns and delayed gratifi cation.

Women’s Forum When you are feeling the effects of the recession, clothes might be the first casualty of your budget. After all, you can always recycle, re-use and redesign your old wardrobe to suit new trends. However, you don’t have to totally forgo shopping for clothes with these tips for purchasing your summer clothes on a budget.Choose Classics Classic pieces like white dress shirts, polo shirts, dark jeans and formal trousers, sports jackets and suits must be an integral part of your wardrobe. You can mix and match these clothes to create different looks, textures and styles for both day and evening occasions. For example, your jeans and polo shirt with a blazer can be used for ca-sual business meetings. Just shed the blazer and you are ready for a night out. If you want, you can update these classics by purchasing new pieces in trendier cuts, colours and cloths. This way, you can get good value from the clothes since you will be trendy today but still be able to use them when the fash-ion season is over.Quality over Quantity When on a budget, always opt for quality over quantity. Although the high quality clothes will cost more than its low-end counterparts, you will be as-sured of good value through superior craftsmanship and better cloths. When you choose high-quality jeans, you can dress up and dress down as you wish with a few simple accessories. With low-end jeans, the texture itself may not be conducive to such versatility.Buy Accessories with Care As previously mentioned, accessories can complete an outfit, change the look of an item of clothing and complement the person. Therefore, it is very important to choose your accessories with care. The opinion in accessories is the lesser, the better. This ought to make shopping on a budget easier since you don’t have to stuff your bags with lots and lots of accessories.Again, remember that quality over quantity is best.Look for Discounts and Sales This is obvious that it is almost an embarrassment to say it here. You can find big discounts in department stores and the designer houses during clearance sales, sample sales and out-of-season sales. The trick is in always being updated about the stores that are offering these consumer benefits. Another cool strategy is to become friendly with the sales associates. You can secure bigger discounts through discount coupons when you ask them nicely, not to mention that you can have your desired items reserved for you. That is, if you are friends with them. In the world of online shopping, you can purchase clothes from auction sites. With a little research, you might even purchase coveted designer jeans with the tags still on and at bargain basement prices. In fact, as much as offline stores give discounts, so do online sites. Therefore, whether you shop online or offline, these tips to shopping for your summer wardrobe on a budget will apply. The only difference will be the way you shop, the former with your mouse and the latter with your feet.

With the regular season nearly over, Bama baseball is now ranked 10th in the nation. With so much emphasis on football, sometimes the other major sports, bas-ketball and baseball, can go without the fanfare even if the team is a sizzler.

This season Bama’s baseball team has been red hot. Head Coach Jim Wells reached a milestone fi gure of 600 wins this season too. Bama won eight straight games and won 14 of the last 17 games. Bama will play it’s fi nal regular season games against Auburn, at Auburn, this weekend...then on to the SEC Cham-pionship games in Hoover May 20. The NCAA Regionals and NCAA Champion-ship games will be held in June in Omaha, NE. Austin Hyatt, an Alabama pitcher, was named SEC pitcher of the week throwing a three hitter against #11 Arkansas this past week.. Here’s to Bama taking Auburn this weekend, the SEC Championship the next weekend, and making it all the way to the top in Omaha.

Q: Where did Alabama head coach Nick Saban play football in college?

A: Kent State as a defensive back 1970-1972

We often speak about government as if it’s some foreign entity. As if the “government” is not us, it’s an otherworldly spirit beyond our control. And...in some ways perhaps it is. Perhaps because I have been in the private sector all my life I don’t understand govern-ment as well as those within it. Yet, I see it usurping the private sector. At the rate of the past 8 years...and what appears to me to be the direction of the next four years...we’ll of had 12 years of expanding government while the private sector is shrinking. I have paid taxes into the government for over 30 years now. I see a lot of results from my dollars. The roads have steadily improved, police protections seems adequate, the public facili-ties such as parks and sports arenas seem to be in good shape. However… Considering the amount of money paid in the government has become a greater and greater disappointment to me over the course of my lifetime. If it were a business...it’s marks would be falling. If it were a business...it is doubtful if I would do business with it anymore. One thing they do is spend money if it needs spending or not. Today this is done under the pretense of keeping the economy going. They pay employees as good as or better than the private sector...but the real kicker they use is benefi ts to pay government worker more than private sector workers. If you are in the private sector...try to fund your own retirement program to the tune of the governments! I bet you can’t do it! I have friends who retired after 20 years work. Let’s see...didn’t work until they were 20, worked 20 years, then retired...live to age 80. That means they will have “used” the labors of others to survive for 60 years of their 80 year lifespan. Now...explain to me again why I should work 60 of my 80 years so that they can do that? And, it’s not only that they can retire after 20 years service...they’re retirement funding is double per year what mine will be based on the governments retirement program. The fact of the matter is...there has become an US versus Them in our economy between those who work in government and those who work in the private sector. We all pay taxes...but all of their income is paid from ours in the private sector. And today...government has the upper hand. A friend of mine is being audited by the IRS now. He operates in the private sector. Real-istically...if you have the “right” to retire with a few years service (20 years is few compared to how many I will work in the private sector)...why cheat on taxes? But if you are up against the wall year in and year out for the entirety of you whole life trying to make ends meet….which one of these is likely to try to skim on taxes? As the government puts more and more pressure on the private sector to raise funds...but at the same time not protecting the private sector from China, Korea, India, Indonesia...well, heck, the whole wide world!….then our incomes are going to fall and fall, and fall, and if it’s us versus them...they will end up trying to take every dime we make. I we all demand government jobs...who’ll pay the taxes. Who’ll be in control.

The Hispanic population has grown in Tuscaloosa by 48.8 percent from 2000 to 2006. That’s more than 10 times the overall rate of population growth in the state for the same time period. Local Hispanic groups say the biggest hurdle for His-panics and the local population remains the language bar-rier. This makes it difficult for local social services groups to deal with assistance for the Hispanic population. The Hispanic population has not reached it’s peak in Tuscaloosa yet. Much more growth is expected over the com-ing years. At a time when the local economy is struggling, a growing number of Hispanic immigrants is straining an al-ready strained system. A larger number of Hispanics are unemployed in Tus-caloosa due to the economy and therefore more will need as-sistance from social services.

Musings On FaithWith Tom Woodard

Find past and current Musings on Faith articles online at www.downyonderantiques.com

The Faultless Man, self-ordained, Looks down, faultless, in disdain,At all of pitiable, fl awed humanity, Those would be peers - cannot be;And being faultless, as was Christ, He judged Him of equality before, But himself having acquired more, Found no need of Him, in precise, Being in self of more than suffi ce, To require safety in Another’s life.

Nay, no sacrifi ce needed this man, Faultless, most brilliant in the land,No price to pay for sinful lost soul, Standing atop achievement’s poll;Of his fellow man he had no care, But that his servants, service bear,Him who is perfection, in his mind, To wisdom of sages ne’r inclined,But rests upon his great brilliance, No grantee of mere happenstance,

And gifted far beyond all his race, (At least he knew he made the case),Rests upon laurels, self-adorned, Friendless, alone, aloof, forlorn.

Yes, as did our Faultless Man see, All he acquired was attributed he,No one helped him gain this place, Grand, standing all alone in grace, August, aloof, unspoiled, pristine, Where he holds sway in air serene,

Amidst audiences of simple fools, Irritating, dirty, necessary tools, Providing him, in rarest pure air, The adornments of a splendid lair.

Grouping about him, all around, Puppets, adoring the heir’s crown -Truth, alas, here ‘round accrued, His Father acquired all he viewed -And he, faultless and fair; Serene, From that man no talents gleaned,But Faultless Man, so proclaimed, Looks about, faultless, in disdain.

“Thou fool”, the Lord God did say, “Thy soul I require of thee today.”

Yours in Christ, Tom

It amazes me how often I still do stupid things. Now it probably doesn’t surprise some of the people who know me, but I honestly shake my head in wonder at my consistent ignorance to learn from the past. This ugly fact has raised its head several times during this turkey season. How can a some-what seasoned hunter do things that he knows will not work? How can he keep thinking that he can keep doing the same thing, and get different results? How can HE be ME? If I sound a little perplexed, I am. Even though I’ve killed a few birds, I have made some bad decisions and have been too impatient. I’ve missed several other birds as a result. After those misses, I have set there empty-handed saying to myself, “What in the world were you doing?” I’ve had no answer. The aftereffects have been noticeable. I can’t quit shaking my head. Now in turkey hunting, these lame brain blunders only cause disappointment and frustration. In other areas of life, the cost is much greater. There really does come a time when we all have to learn the lesson. We can’t go on and on making the same mistake over and over thinking a heartfelt “I’m sorry” will make everything all right. Those that we hurt are not convinced our latest slip-up will be our last….. But why? It’s because we keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. Someone has called this the defi nition of insanity. For real change to happen there must be a radical detour from the direction we have been going. That radical detour will ultimately lead to making the right decisions when the moment of truth comes. I have counseled those who have claimed to be at the end of themselves. They exclaim they are at the bottom and are tired of doing things their way. But when I tell them what they need to do, they will make excuses as to why they are unable to do it. It just proves they are not actually at the bottom or at the end of themselves. There is still something left they are holding on to. God is willing to radically take the reins of anyone’s life. We must be willing to completely let go of everything without question. God, in turn, will begin to do the work in His power that we were unable to do in our own. Have you discovered a pattern in your own life? Is it one that has always led you down a path of pain? Why not give God a try? It may be a radical detour, but it will always lead to a better outcome.

WHY? In the developing world, millions of women and children walk up to four miles every day to fetch water for their families. Sadly, the water they fetch is filthy and bacteria ridden, causing wide-spread sickness and death. In fact, as many as 25,000 people – most of them chil-dren – die each day due to waterborne diseases. Walk for Water to raise awareness of the global water crisis and help Water Missions International provide life-saving, safe water to those who thirst.

WHAT? The Walk for Water is a fun, educational, family-friendly event that everyone will enjoy! This 3.5-mile route through Downtown Charleston is inspired by the ex-perience of women and children who are responsible for fetching water for their families. Each walker will have the opportunity to carry an empty water pail, which can be

filled with dirty water at the halfway point along the route then carried to the finish. After the walk, enjoy live entertainment, activities and refreshments in the park.

WHEN & WHERE? Check-in begins at 8:00am Saturday, March 21, at Cannon Park, Down-town Charleston (129 Rutledge Ave., Charleston, SC). The Walk for Water begins at 9:00am and festivities in the park will follow.

WANT TO GET INVOLVED? Whether you plan to walk or simply support the cause, there are many ways you can make a difference!

WMI’s mission is to provide sustainable access to safe water and an opportunity to hear the “Living Water” message in developing countries and disaster areas.
