Tungsten lighting is a term used by photographers

to distinguish from fluorescent lighting or strobe lighting.

Tungsten is a type of incandescent lighting using a bulb

with a filament made of the metal tungsten, as opposed

to, say, carbon or platinum. Unless you have switched

to compact fluorescents, most of the lighting in your

home is tungsten. In still photography, tungsten lighting

gave studio photographers greater flexibility than

the classic north sky light. Tungsten lights reigned

supreme for many years in commercial studios until

the introduction of strobes (or speed lights) and some

workers still prefer tungsten for its controllability

(what you see is what you get). For television and

cinematography tungsten is essential.

This exhibition aims to celebrate tungsten as a form

of lighting within photography; highlighting some

of its best uses and also where it is still being used

in todays society.

Tungsten lighting is a repetitive theme on the night time

streets of Shanghai. Whilst larger hoardings and taller

buildings are covered with neon, down at street level,

amongst the people, tungsten still reigns.

Naomi effectiveley uses a tungsten whitebalance setting

in extreme weathers like snow and twilight to achieve

some tremendous photographic effects. A scene that

normally would have been shot as grey and boring is

transformed into a landscape of beautiful hues of blue

and red.

Graham Birch specialises in portraiture and favours

using the tungsten 64 film. This type of film allows him to

get really interesting photographs that allow a portrait

to be captured in a whole different array of hues to one

would normally expect. The results are spectacular.

Carol Matthews specialises in travel and architecture

with her form of tungsten photography. Similarly to

Graham she favours using the Tungsten 64 film for her

images. Carol captures very interesting and rustic towns

and amplifies their individuality by highlighting the light

and shadows with tungsten white balance.
