From the President—Barbara Barnard Hello Friends!

September was a busy and productive month for SMEI Topeka!! Thank you to all the members who helped plan, support or participated in one of the many events that took place last month. I hope you made new friends and business contacts in the process.

Thank you to Phil Tysinger and Tim Krueger for organizing the golf tournament on September 17th. If you missed the tournament, you missed a beautiful and fun day on the course. Thanks

also to Lori Keegan for organizing the High Performance Seminar on September 28th. Over thirty-five members and member guests attended this event to learn more about intuitional decision making and muscle testing. A great start for the first high performance seminar this year.

Another active group is our Membership Committees under the direction of vice president Ed Carmona. We have over 10 new members join so far this year! Ed has formed four committees within Membership: Recruitment (Chair Diana Ramirez) Hospitality (Chair Anne Weigel), Summer Social (Chair Deb Payne) and Retention. Be sure to tell Ed if you know someone who might benefit from joining our organization.

Please join me in congratulating Deb Payne as our October Executive of the Month. The board of directors chose to recognize Deb for her work on the Summer Membership Social. Deb is a new member who has “jumped in our organization with both feet”! If you have not met Deb, please be sure to introduce yourself to her at our next meeting.

I look forward to seeing you on October 9th for our general membership meeting at Topeka Country Club. The featured speaker is Dale Pond, a former marketing executive with McDonald’s and Lowe’s. Remember come early for a “toolbox” session regarding referrals. I look forward to learning more ways to “grow my business” and seeing you there!

Executive of the Month—Deb Payne, Lighthouse Coaching

This month, SMEI-Topeka honors Deb Payne for her work on the summer social. Deb has a strong academic background, with a master’s degree in Adult and Vocational Education/Training and Development. She was recognized by the University of Nebraska (yes, she is a Husker) as Entrepreneurial Teacher of the Year.

She coaches start up businesses through the Chamber of Commerce Fast Track Program; she is a consultant with the Washburn Small Business Development Center where she assists students taking the marketing management class at Washburn University to develop marketing plans for area businesses; and she teaches business classes at Friends University. She owned Textbook Team, a college textbook store for Washburn U students for seven years.

With all of these connections Deb started her Lighthouse Coaching business where she charts a course to business success by navigating business people around the rocks into the smooth waters where she guides them to shore where their ship will come in. (Can you visualize this?) Deb listens, she asks, and reflects on the unique needs of each client and then draws from her years of teaching and running a business to help her clients reach for their dreams.

Deb is involved with many organizations in Topeka. Chamber of Commerce, American Business Woman’s Association, Association of Women Entrepreneurs, Kansas Network of Professional Women, and Sales and Marketing Executives are a few. She also is an advocate for Sunshine Connection which is a drop in center for mentally challenged adults.

People say that Deb is everywhere. Well those people must be everywhere also! The camaraderie and professionalism of this SMEI-Topeka is an asset to Deb who connects people and gives them the encouragement and motivation to strive to be the best in their field. Her clients benefit from who she knows and this organization is full of people that are the movers and shakers of Topeka.

Deb has two amazing kids, Amanda and Bryan. Amanda is about to graduate this year from William Woods University in Fulton, MO with a major in Equestrian Science and a minor in Education. She loves to jump and train horses as well as kids. She is getting married in May and will live in Sedalia, MO. Bryan is a third degree black belt and just started at Pittsburgh State in Construction Management. So Deb is an empty nester who is keeping herself busy by working with all of her students and clients.

Founding Principles

All of SMEI’s activities are guided by five founding principles, designed to strengthen the principles and practice of the

profession.

1. Professional Identification and Standards. The improvement of the standards for professional selling, sales management and marketing, in order to establish sales and marketing as a recognized profession.

2. Continuing Education. The planning and implementation of monthly meetings of the membership to enable members to keep up-to-date with changes in the marketplace and to grow as professionals. The planning and implementation of organized training programs for professional selling, sales management, and marketing.

3. Sharing Knowledge. The establishment of discussion forums, for example, shirt sleeve seminars, and roundtable meetings which enable members to share sales and marketing experiences and knowledge.

4. Assist Students. The establishment of programs to work with students at the high school and college levels to enable them to understand the excellent career opportunities in the sales and marketing profession. This objective ultimately led to the current SMEI sponsored programs with Junior Achievement, Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), and Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE).

5. Support the Free Enterprise System. In recognizing that sales and marketing is the energizing force that drives the competitive marketplace, SMEI has always been committed to supporting the free enterprise concept.
