FOUNDED IN 2006 and presented by Flow, the trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff), the largest event of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean, continues to evolve and expand in celebrating expression and empowerment through film. The Festival screens the best films from Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean, the Caribbean Diaspora, and Latin American countries in the Caribbean Basin. UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIESThis is the third consecutive year that the ttff will be holding screenings at UWI. The screenings are hosted by UWI’s Film Programme, whose students and alumni continue to contribute top-notch content to the festival. One of the festival’s workshops will also take place on the UWI campus.

STUDIOFILMCLUBFounded by artists Peter Doig and Che Lovelace, Studiofilmclub (SFC) has been screening independent and art-house films since 2003. This year—its fifth as a partner of the ttff—SFC will host two nights of screenings as part of the ttff/11, on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 September from 7.30pm. There will be an after-party on the Friday evening. Also, an exhibition of Peter Doig’s SFC film posters will be held during the festival, at the ttff offices.

ZANZIBAR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL2010 marked the first year of a cultural exchange programme, facilitated by the Commonwealth Foundation, between the ttff and the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) in east Africa. The programme has now entered its second year. In addition to films from ZIFF being screened at the ttff/11, Prof Ikaweba Bunting, ZIFF’s director, will attend the festival and host a workshop.

THE EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVALSince 1996 the European missions in Trinidad and Tobago have been hosting the annual European Film Festival (EFF). This year the ttff is joining forces with the EFF for the first time, with the EFF supporting a number of screenings at the ttff/11.

ANIMAE CARIBEThe Animae Caribe Animation and New Media Festival this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. The ttff is pleased to note this landmark by screening some of Animae Caribe’s best 2010 selections.

THE TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ SHORT FILM FESTIVALFounded by MovieTowne in 2005, the Trinidad and Tobago Secondary Schools’ Short Film Festival (SSSFF) is part of the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company’s programme to develop the local film industry. This year the SSSFF attracted 40 schools from throughout the country, and featured five themes. The ttff is pleased to be screening the winning productions.

IN 1911 the first cinema in Trinidad + Tobago, the London Electric Theatre, opened its doors in Port of Spain, and a local love-affair with the cinema was born. One hundred years later, the ttff, in association with bpTT, is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the cinema industry in Trinidad and Tobago with a cinema and film pioneers tribute award.

Starting with the ttff/11, every year the festival will recognise some of the pioneers of cinema and film in T+T and the Caribbean. There will also be an annual bursary worth $20,000, sponsored by bpTT, for a student of the UWI Film Programme.

PARTICIPATORY FILMMAKING FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT + CULTURAL AFFIRMATION, WITH IKAWEBA BUNTINGParticipatory filmmaking involves training communities, at a grassroots level, to tell their own stories. MASTER DOCUMENTARY WORKSHOP WITH ADAM LOW What do painter Francis Bacon, filmmaker Satyajit Ray and writer VS Naipaul have in common? FOCUS ON CHRIS BROWNE, JAMAICAN FILMMAKERThis workshop celebrates the work of Chris Browne, award-winning film director, director of photography and screenwriter. In a career that began with work on the classic Caribbean film, The Harder They Come, Browne has directed several feature films, including Jamaica’s most popular film, Third World Cop, and been the director of photography on scores of music videos. His latest film, Ghett’a Life, won a screenwriting award at the Cannes Film Festival. Browne will show selections from his films and explain the various techniques he has used throughout his work.

CHARACTER ACTING FOR WRITERS, DIRECTORS AND ACTORSThis two-day workshop will focus on developing authentic, need-based characters, with a further focus on acting for the screen. The workshop will help writers create truthful characters, and assist directors in understanding how to help actors shape these characters with clarity. All those participating will also gain a better understanding of the differences between acting on camera, on stage, and in a casting office. The workshop will be led by Kirk Baltz, a US-based acting coach with 15 years of teaching experience. FILMMAKERS’ PANELS

Every year the festival provides a public platform for local and visiting filmmakers to discuss their craft, from the creative idea to production to the business of financing, marketing and, ultimately, distributing their films. The two filmmakers’ panels last up to 90 minutes and provide a rare opportunity to see local, regional and international filmmakers come together to discuss the shared experience of making films within a Caribbean context.

FOR THE FIRST TIME, the ttff, in conjunction with RBC Royal Bank and the Commonwealth Foundation, is hosting a development programme for Caribbean filmmakers. Entitled Focus: Filmmakers’ Immersion, the programme will give 10 select filmmakers the opportunity to learn from professional film artists.

Focus takes place from 20–22 September at Ajoupa Pottery in central Trinidad. It will include group discussions on a range of topics concentrating on the artistic side of narrative filmmaking, sharpening the skills and abilities of participants. There will be a particular emphasis on enhancing the filmmakers’ creative voices.

The facilitators for Focus are two experienced, award-winning, international film-industry

professionals: Venezuelan director and screenwriter Fina Torres, and Guyanese-Canadian producer and actor Damon D’Oliveira. Torres is the writer, director and producer of several feature films, including Woman on Top (2000), starring Penelope Cruz. Mr D’Oliveira’s films as a producer include Poor Boy’s Game (2007), starring Danny Glover.

At the end of Focus, the facilitators will choose their

top five participants. These participants will be given an opportunity on 30 September to pitch their Focus project to the ttff’s five-member awards jury at a public event. The participant with the best project and pitch, as determined by the jury, will win a cash prize of TT$20,000.

AS PART OF an ongoing series of events that take place outside of the annual festival, the ttff will be hosting an afternoon with Cameron Bailey, Co-Director of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The event takes place in association with the Trinidad & Tobago Coalition of Service Industries (TTCSI) and the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company.

TIFF is the world’s largest public film festival, annually screening hundreds of films from all over the globe. Many TIFF selections have screened at the ttff over the years, including the Trinidad and Tobago film Sistagod (Yao Ramesar, 2006), and the Bahamian film Rain (Maria Govan, 2008).

SOMEBODY’S BEEN SITTING IN MY CHAIRLa Vaughn Belle In this piece, the artist reenacts various scenes of the fairy-tale “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” in an 18th-century great house to explore ideas of ownership and intrusion.

ZWAYONAndrea Chung In Zwayon, the interest lies in the ambiguity of tears. Each woman is placed in the same environment and responds according to their personalities. It requires the viewer to contemplate the truth and conditions of each response.

AMPHIBIAN MODENayda Collazo-LlorensAmphibian Mode submerges the viewer into an underwater world in which text becomes noise, broken dialogue, and interfered thoughts. It examines post-alphabetic communication and noise through a sensorial, non-linear narrative.

SOLO JESUS SPEAK OF ME AS I AM Jayson Keeling Through the use of photography, video, and other related media, Jayson Keeling creates artworks that provoke and dismantle pop iconography and the accepted politics of sex, gender, race, and religion.

ATLANTIC TRANSFORMERZCharl LandvreugdAtlantic Transformerz explores the multiplicity of hues in the colour black, and makes an issue out of distinguishing black diversity. Inspired by the African Diaspora in Amsterdam, he unites the four continents around the Atlantic Ocean.

HAITI (ESTADO DE AUSENCIA)Marcos Lora ReadThis short film features an installation at the ruins of the first hospital in the Americas, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In this work Lora Read reflects on the humanitarian tragedies in Haiti, and the use of wind as a purifying energy.

AVANT GARDE and experimental film and video works have traditionally formed a part of the trinidad+tobago film festival. This year, the festival, in collaboration with ARC Magazine, presents New Media, a collection of 11 artists’ works. These works explore a range of themes and issues, while pushing and blurring the boundaries between film and art.

THE ttff is delighted to have Abigail Hadeed as its official photographer for 2011. A past first-prize winner of the Commonwealth Photographic Awards, Hadeed captures the diversity of the Caribbean in her striking work, from traditional Carnival characters in Trinidad to the indigenous communities of Guyana.

LANDSCAPE (WESTERN HEMISPHERE) Lorraine O’Grady Landscape (Western Hemisphere) is a video work-in-progress that employs the artist’s hair as a metaphor for the hybrid nature of history and culture in the Americas and the Antilles.

MUHE FRIDA Felix de Rooy and TeamMuhe Frida is a film expressing seven alter egos of the late artist Frida Kahlo, revealing her strength, power and agonies. The film is written and directed by de Rooy and edited by Ryan Oduber, with Alydia Wever as Kahlo.

A NATURAL HISTORYOneika RussellA Natural History is a work conveying the experience of otherness in a foreign country. It is also a simple poem about a particular forest in Japan.

THE JURYThe film festival jury is made up of five film industry professionals, all independent of the ttff. Before the festival, the jurors watch all films in competition. They rate the films via a points system, judging by various criteria. Having chosen their best films, the jurors will meet during the ttff/11 to decide which films are to be awarded the various prizes.

IKAWEBA BUNTINGProf Ika Bunting, the Director of the Zanzibar International Film Festival, was one of the first black film technicians in Hollywood. From the USA, he lived in Africa for almost three decades, where he worked for the Tanzania Film Company and other organisations. He teaches at California State University, Long Beach.

TONY HALLTony Hall is a Trinidad-born play-wright, director and actor. He has worked with the Trinidad Theatre Workshop and at the pioneering Banyan Limited. In 1992 he co-directed the award-winning documentary, And the Dish Ran Away With the Spoon. His acclaimed play, Jean and Dinah, is being adapted into a feature film.

ADAM LOWAdam Low is a British documen-tary filmmaker whose work has won numerous prizes. His subjects have ranged from filmmaker Satyajit Ray to painter Francis Bacon to writer VS Naipaul. He is currently working on a film about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and one on the writer William Golding.

MIKE MAGGIOREMike Maggiore is a programmer at New York’s Film Forum, an independent cinema specialising in foreign art-house and American independent films. He has served on the committee of the Sundance Documentary Fund and on the juries of various film festivals, including the Miami International Film Festival.

SAVRINA CHINIENSavrina Chinien teaches French and Francophone Literature at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine. She is a member of the African Federation of Film Critics. Her areas of interest include fran-cophone literature and film in the Caribbean region. She also works on Post-war French literature, theatre and film.

SIX FRIENDS head to a quiet fishing village to make an investigative documentary. What starts out as a routine film shoot in a supposed paradise quickly turns to hell, however, as the friends find themselves preyed upon by a demented family of sadists.
