4 FESTIVAL GUIDE JULY/AUGUST 2011

The Montana Folk Festival will “return” for thefirst time ever this July. After three years as the host for the National

Folk Festival, Montana organizers have decided thatas long as the community and statewide support forthe free event remains strong, the festival will continue as the Montana Folk Festival. From the beginning, before the first note played

in the first of three successful Nationals, the goalhas been to develop a successor festival. In 2011, the name will change, but the Montana

Folk Festival will be a new and exciting event, whichat the same time will remain very familiar to anyonewho has attended the Nationals in the previousthree years. The Montana will continue to feature multiple

stages with continuous live performances by someof the best traditional musical performers in thenation, including Montana’s finest, some of theregion’s best traditional artists, great ethnic and festival foods, a lively Family Area, and Folklifedemonstrations and workshops that focus on atheme that highlights Montana’s heritage. All of this is set in the spectacular setting of

Butte, Montana part of the Nation’s largest HistoricLandmark District and surrounded by tall buildings, mine yards and the Northern Rockies.Festival organizers have invited other

organizations, individuals and corporations to support the transition from the National to a long-term, permanent tourism engine and cultural magnet that will continue to feature top national, as

well as showcaseMontana’s rich heritage.“We want the

substantial economic impactto be a permanent asset forMontana. We want to build on the foundation of themassive effort, precious experience and valuable infrastructure,” said Tom Staples, president of Mainstreet Uptown Butte, the Montananon-profit that invited the three-year national extravaganza to the Treasure State in 2007.“The Folk Festival has brought tens of thousands

of new visitors to Montana, and is helping to marketthe best of the state to new and returning friends,”Staples added. The Montana Folk Festival will continue to high-

light the natural and cultural wonders of Montana. From the beginning, the goal has been to buildcoalitions and collaborations of arts and festivalsponsors to ultimately support established summerfestivals throughout Montana as well as to create apermanent base of support for the annual Montanaevent. Visit the official website to volunteer or learn

about the free performances, demonstrations andworkshops. You can also visit on Facebook or

Evel

DaysKnievel

In late July, Evel Knievel’s hometown of Butte plays host to the world’s greatest celebration for the world’s greatest daredevil in the finest fashion.

Started in 2002, the three-day event draws thousands of visitors from allover the world to the Mining City’s Uptown during the fourth weekend in July.

Spanky Spangler, Ryan Capes, Trigger Gumm and the Kaptain himself,Robbie Knievel have all performed headline stunts for EK Days, not to mention dozens of dazzling feats attempted by some of the country's greatest stuntmen and daredevils.

Before his death in 2007, Evel took the stage at the annual hoopla to welcome his fans, promote the event — of which he was very proud — and to thank all of the daring stuntmen who showed up to perform in honor of the festival’s namesake.

This year’s festival will not disappoint fans who have come to expect the best, with featured guests including Spanky Spangler,

three years, more than180 million people havewatched Spanky performhis amazing stunts.

As far back as he canremember, Spanky’s driving desire was to bea Hollywood stuntman. He trained constantlyand rigorously in allvarieties of sports.

After enlisting in thearmy, first as a para-trooper and later as aGreen Beret, he becamea decorated soldier andthe youngest GreenBeret to this date. Hisexperiences in the armedforces helped preparehim for what was tocome.

Spanky has performedin front of crowds inexcess of 300,000 all overthe world.

Freestyle motocross rider Keith Sayers will be backfor this year’s Evel Knievel days, leading his team indeath-defying stunts high in the air. Sayers and his

riders are always a crowd pleaser as they fly through theair and turn back flips on their bikes.

Sayers, a native Montanan, was born and raised in Butte, the hometown of Evel Knievel. Keith has been riding motorcycles for most of his life.He bought his first motorcycle at the age of 9 from his neighbor for $10, and from there it has been one epic ride for this hard working Rocky Mountain kid.

In 1995, at the age of 12, Keith started racing motocross which led him to three Montanastate motocross championships. From there, Keith put in the time to advance himself in racing but found that Montana was a difficult area to becomenoticed. Finding new inspiration in 1997, Keith started performing freestyle motocross demosduring race intermissions. He caught on quickly, and in2002 at the Unleash the Freaks tour, Keith was introduced to Steve Miller from SCS Racing.

The An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival is a production of

the Montana Gaelic Cultural Society (MGCS). The

MGCS was founded to promote the culture of the

Irish and Gaels in Montana and beyond. The MGCS works

to host and promote cultural activities across Montana that

include Irish language immersion courses, concerts,

lectures, music and dance performances, and various other

educational activities.

The Irish have a strong tradition and link in Montana,

and the MGCS works to promote that culture. The An Rí

Rá is the grand celebration of the MGCS held annually in

Historic Uptown Butte. The An Rí Rá hosts the world’s best

Irish performers, lecturers, language instructors, authors,

and scholars each year. It is a wonderful celebration of all

things Irish and focused on the true traditions of Ireland.

The MGCS is working towards the goal of establishing

an Irish Cultural Center in Historic Uptown Butte to serve

the Irish of Montana. There are Irish strongholds all over

this state including Butte, Helena, Great Falls, Missoula,

Bozeman, and Billings, as well as outlying agricultural

areas. From the Copper Kings of Butte to former Gov.

Thomas Francis Meagher, Montana is home to the Irish in

the United States.

This celebration of the Irish Culture takes place at the

2011 An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival in Historic Uptown

Butte on Aug. 12-14.

Glengarry BhoysDescribed as bold, unorthodox, vibrant, and evocative,

the Glengarry Bhoys have an energy and good humor,

as much a part of the show as their musicianship, that

crosses all cultures and ages. Many things have been

written and reported about this world renowned

Canadian alt-celt group over the last decade, all depict-

ing their musical and entertaining prowess with varied

audiences the world over, and also their ability to

marshal large enthusiastic crowds show after show.

Their objective is simple yet evocative, as stated by

their lead singer Graham Wright in a CBC “Fresh Air”

interview:

“If our audience can only get 10 percent of the

satisfaction we get entertaining them — then we

surpass objective.”

Evans & DohertyThese two are first-rate musicians, singers,

songwriters, promoters and producers.

Kevin Evans & Brian Doherty have been an

integral part of the East Coast music scene for

20 years. To capture the essence of an Evans

& Doherty performance, take a lively blend of

traditional, original and contemporary songs,

and add a liberal sprinkling of stories and

humor.

As well as performing on stage, Evans

& Doherty are involved with many aspects of

the music industry. Brian owns and operates

a booking agency and production company,

and Kevin owns and operates Modtrad Music,

a publishing company.

Brendan

O’SheaIrish native O’Shea

has become a
