Our own economy earmuff that are still certified to the highest level of protection - Class 5 under safety standard AS/NZS 1270. They have adjustable, very soft & comfortable ear cushions and a heavy duty plastic frame with corrigated foam to enable it to sit comfortably on top of the head and allow

E.A.R. soft earplugs are made of an advanced foam formulation for a softer feel and low pressure in the ear canal. While there are Class 5 earplugs (highest level)like the EAR FX these tend to be harder and less comfortable for some users. RTD COMPOUND A metal cutting lubricant in paste form for all machining operations including reaming, tapping and drilling on all metals. It has been formulated to cling to the tool thus providing the ultimate in cutting performance. RTD Compound may be diluted with light mineral oil to provide flow, but is not suitable as an additive to water based fluids. Prolongs tool and die life. Improves thread and surface finish. Prevents welding - ideal for difficult metals. Compound adheres well to working surfaces. Increase production rates. NZFSA Approved C14 (All animal product except dairy).

LANOX SPRAYLanox is a heavy duty anti-moisture, anti-corrosion lubricant made with a high grade lubricating oil and lanolin base with specialized chemical compounds. Lanox doesn't dry out or wash off with water.

BOEHM Hollow punches, often known as joint-cutters or wad punches, have many varied uses, and can be used for cutting out gaskets and sealing rings in foam, cardboard, leather, rubber, fibre, plastic and lead. Not only is the quality of these punches unsurpassable, but there is also the added bonus of being able to use pairs. The hollow punch sets can be paired and inter-changed very quickly and easily by using the patented lock in chuck system. A paired set of punches can be used to cut washers or sealing rings, etc. in foam, cardboard, leather, rubber, fibre, plastic or lead. A range of sets are available and each set includes a holder and a range of punches which fit to the holder either singly, for discs or in pairs for washers. All supplied in a case.

LAST MONTH WE LOOKED AT GENERAL WORKSHOP DRILL TYPES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS. NOW WE WILL LOOK AT A FEW OPTIONS TO COVER YOUR NEEDS FOR DRILLING LARGER DIAMETER HOLES.

DRILLS & DRILLING

Q. Is there a faster way to drill large diameter deep holes other than using numerous pilot drills?A. Yes. One option is the range of Showa Super Drills (see picture below). These drills provide single pass precision boring of Ø50mm – Ø270mm holes up to 15 times diameter. The Super Drill’s built-in centre drill acts as an axis for precision drilling, eliminating the need for centre drilling and pilot drilling. The Super Drill has been developed to increase its flexibility, employing a modular system. Each drill consists of a head and a shank, to which extension arbors are added for deeper holes. The Showa drill can only be used when drilling from Solid material. It will not work if a pilot hole has been drilled.

Q. What sizes are available?A. Due to the use of adjustable blades in these drills the size range is infinitely adjustable. Each drill consists of a Roughing and a Finishing Blade and a Centre Drill. The combination of the Roughing and Finishing Blades causes the drill to form small chips, which along with the thru coolant provides efficient chip control. Because of this, no pecking is required, even for deep holes. Flat Blades are also available up to Ø120mm for counterboring.

Q. What materials can be drilled with this drill?A. Showa Super Drill Blades are manufactured from sintered HSS which provides excellent drilling performance in materials ranging from Aluminium to D2 steel.

Q. Are these drills available for smaller diameters?A. No. They start at Ø50mm. For smaller sizes, Hougen Annular Cutters are available. These cutters start at Ø12mm and go up to Ø52mm with a depth of cut of 25mm, 50mm or 75mm. These drills are only for through holes and will not drill blind holes.

Q. How can these cutters offer such a big advantage?A. Hougen Annular cutters maximize feed rates because up to 10 cutting edges distribute the cutting load evenly. These cutters allow you to multiply the speed of cut by more than 2-3 times compared to a normal twist drill. Hougen Annular cutters convert a smaller area into chips, requiring less horsepower and thrust. The cutter produces a slug that is ejected from the cutter by a spring loaded pilot pin. The tooth

geometry provides longer tool life. The slug also offers higher scrap value than loose chips. These cutters can also be reground to cut through stacked plate.

Q. Where are these cutters mainly used?A.The majority are used in Portable Magnetic Drills. But we also have Morse Taper adaptors available so you can get the benefit of these cutters in Drill Presses and Milling Machines. Hougen also produce special cutters for drilling the likes of Railway Tracks.

Q. Are they limited to this size range?A. No. The Heavy Duty range of Hougen Annular cutters will produce thru holes up to 4” dia. in materials up to 6” thick. Larger diameters and special depths are available on request. These cutters are designed for use on conventional machine tools and machining centres and will lower your cost per hole in production applications. Setups require internal lubrication through the spindle or coolant inducer tool holder.

Q. How about drilling work hardening materials such as Manganese alloyed steel?A. Heavy duty drilling in work hardening material such as 12% - 14% manganese steels can be achieved by using an Armour Piercing drill. These drills are also suited for drilling heat-treated steel.

Q. What are the characteristics of an Armour Piercing Drill?A. Armour Piercing drills are manufactured from HSS with an 8% Cobalt content to provide a much tougher drill than a normal taper shank drill. They have a 15° slow helix angle with a 130° point angle. The web of the drill is thicker than normal and is thinned at the point.

Q. What are the optimum cutting conditions?A. Cutting speeds of approx. 3-4 m/min with a feed rate of about 60% of normal should be used. A very rigid machine and work piece setup is essential. The material should be drilled without coolant. The drill should not engage the work piece without the feed engaged as any rubbing of the work piece will cause it to work harden and could prevent further machining.
