Back in 1955 Bill McGechie was working for a company called Morris Black and Matheson as a salesman. Morris Black and Matheson were importers and distributors of a vast range of mainly engineering related product. Before the Second World War Bill had completed a fitting and turning engineering apprenticeship so was well suited for this role. During the 50’s manufacturing in NZ was really starting to grow and Bill was very much aware that there was a lack of any specialist company concentrating on selling cutting tools and other related product. After discussing this with MBM he decided (with their blessing) to leave and start his own business,specialising in cutting tools and threading equipment. He commenced trading in August 1955, in the back bedroom of the first house he and his wife Pat had recently purchased. They had not only scrimped and saved to buy the house but also to get enough money together to land a small shipment of HSS cutting tools in from England. During the day Pat would look after the three young children they had at that stage while Bill would do his sales calls. In the evenings they would work as a team writing up orders, getting the stock together and preparing for the next day. This set the pattern for the first few years however Bill would also supplement the meagre income by

HISTORY OF TRADE TOOLSsourcing surplus stocks held by manufacturers as well as attending the sale of surplus tooling from the Railways, Ministry of Works and the Navy. He would then boost his stock with these items and find a willing market for the product. Ever so gradually the business started to grow and Bill moved into premises in Federal Street in Auckland City, about where the Casino now stands. As in any fledgling business there are many many stories told about these early times. Some are very funny, such as the first ever “van” that Bill bought, an aging Bedford that literally broke its back struggling up Anzac Ave with a load from the wharf. Others are not so humorous and revolve round the continual battle just to make a living whilst raising four children and always undercapitalised, battling bureaucracy and a myriad of other issues. Through very hard work and the support of some very loyal staff the business continued to grow and expand into areas such as Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The Auckland head office and main warehouse required a series of larger buildings over the years before the company moved into its current location in Penrose. Along the way came some very happy mergers with such companies as Alexander’s Engineering Supplies in Christchurch and then also the purchase of Total Trade Supplies in Rotorua and Hamilton and Engineering Supplies in Wellington.

Bill passed the baton over to his eldest son John back in 1991 but continued to be very involved in the business, right up to his passing away in 2005. Over the last 5 years Trade Tools has had to face head on a significantly reduced manufacturing sector as the flood of companies moving their factories offshore gained momentum together with an incoming flood of cheap (and usually inferior) product that had previously been made in NZ. This has resulted in TTL having to reduce the size of its operation as demand in some sectors has fallen. It is a common theme for many businesses particularly as it came in conjunction with a global recession. The company now has two thriving divisions, these are Trade Tools which is a very focused specialist engineering solutions provider and Industrial Tooling Limited which is a measuring tool and plastic and press tool component specialist. Both divisions are staffed by some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable people in the industry. Both divisions are firmly focused on the future and utilise not only a strong web presence but will continue to provide a level of stockholding and service second to none.

INDEXABLE TUNGSTEN CARBIDE INSERTS

We often get asked about the differences between one carbide grade and another, which grade should be used on which materials and what advantage one has over another. To answer some of these questions we will start to talk about carbide inserts, the grades, types of inserts and their applications.

Q. How are Tungsten Carbide Inserts made?

A. The method of manufacture is generally known as powder metallurgy. In its simplest composition it is a product of a hard material (Tungsten Carbide) and a binder (Cobalt) sintered together. The Carbide and Cobalt powders are mixed so that the hard carbide grains are coated with a thin film of cobalt binder. The powder is then pressed into shape in moulds. The inserts are then loaded into the sintering furnace where densification and shrinkage take place. The art of making carbide inserts consists to a great extent in calculating the size of the finished insert as shrinkage of approx. 17% occurs during sintering. This accurate calculation combined with precise die making techniques, often enables finished inserts to be produced after sintering, thus eliminating the need for expensive grinding operations.

Q. What is the difference from one grade to another?

A. By altering the proportion of Carbide and Cobalt the properties of the finished insert alter. The more carbide added to the mix results in a harder product and the more cobalt means a tougher product. With the addition of coatings, which permit high cutting speeds, new substrate carbides have been developed to withstand high temperatures, higher toughness, and resistance to deformation and thermal shock or cracking.

Q. What are the coatings on the inserts and what do they do?

A. Most inserts are coated after being sintered. These coatings are multiple layers of material including Titanium Nitride (TiN), Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3), Titanium Aluminium Nitride (TiAlN) and Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN). These coatings give the carbide an extended application range and more resistance to factors that cause the inserts to fail. Among the advantages of coatings are lower cutting forces, increased wear resistance and less tendency of built up edge. The improved wear resistance can be used to increase tool life, but from an economical point of view, it is often more favourable to increase speeds and feeds to get a higher metal removal rate.

Q. How do you tell the difference from one grade to another?

A. To make it easier to classify carbides the ISO standard was introduced which gives a general classification of grades. It is divided into three main groups, P, M & K.

P - Refers to Steel machining and is coded Blue.

M - Refers to machining Stainless Steel and is coded Yellow.

K - Refers to Cast Iron materials and is coded Red.

Each group has sub-groups designated by a numerical scale. The higher the figure of the sub-group, the greater the toughness of the carbide. However a demand for toughness is always made at the expense of hardness (wear resistance). As mentioned earlier, with the technology that is in the inserts of today, it is possible to get inserts which will machine in all three material areas. The complete ISO table also includes classification of Aluminium and other Non-Ferrous materials (Green), Iron, Copper, Titanium and Nickel based Superalloys (Brown) and Hard and Difficult High Strength Steels (Grey).

Q. Does this standard give me exactly what I want?

A. Although the ISO classification is a method by which carbides manufacturers may designate their various grades, it was not intended to represent a comparative table of carbide grades. Grades classified in the same group by different manufacturers may differ from one another in composition, hardness, toughness or cutting performance. The ISO system offers a basic choice for general machining, for a more specialized application or for a grade selection to achieve optimum performance in your workshop, contact your Trade Tools Sales Engineer or your nearest Trade Tools Branch.
