VOLUNTEERING

President’s Message I hope that your holidays were filled with peace and joy, and everyone had the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends.

2016 is upon us and already in full swing. There are several special events you will want to put on your calendar soon. The very well attended Lutefisk, Lefse, and Meatball dinner will be held on January 16th, and our Anniversary Dinner is in February. It was suggested at our last Board meeting that the Anniversary Dinner be held in a local restaurant. More comprehensive information regarding this event will be in the February newsletter.

Due to inclement weather, our November General Meeting was cancelled. Carol Neverdahl had planned to bring Norwegian Bingo to this meeting. Good news! Carol has rescheduled this fun event for our February General meeting on the 15th. Hope to see you there!

If any of you have suggestions for our monthly programs, please let me know. We are always open to new ideas and interests. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at the lodge, please let us know what your interests are. We sincerely would appreciate the donation of a few hours of your time. Many hands make less work for everyone and you make

new friends! It’s fun!

Fraternally, John Michael Neverdahl, President

General Meeting January 18, 2016 – Monday 7 pm: Potluck

Program-Cultural Skills

Cultural Skills Program 101

Have you always wanted to learn more about traditional and contemporary Norwegian culture? January is a good time to start a new project. I will provide you with the very basics to get you motivated. Will it be music? Reading Norwegian Authors? Rosemaling? There are numerous subjects to select from! Let's learn together!

There will be Cultural Skills Masters at the meeting also, to answer questions. Learn a new hobby! ---Carol Neverdahl, Social Director

February’s General Meeting program on Feb. 15, 2016 will be a fun night as we learn Norwegian Bingo. The November meeting was cancelled a few months ago due to weather, so we will introduce this game next month.

New Members/Changes By Bev Moe, Membership Secretary

New Member Bryan Anderson 2266 S Gilpin St Denver CO 80210-4617 720-474-2261 [email protected] Bryan Anderson recently gave us a program about Bicycling in the Norwegian Den Styrkeproven Competition. He is also the father of Evan Anderson, one of our Youth Members who has also presented a program earlier in the year on his Norwegian G-Grandfather in WWI.

Message from the Editor

I made a mistake back in 2013 when I took the newsletter over from the former editor, Dawn Nelson. I somehow started with the correct VOLUME NUMBER, (40th) but changed it back to the 39th volume for some reason. I have been following this pattern for each of the following years; 2014 which is marked as 40th but should be the 41st volume, and for 2015 which is marked as 41nd but should be the 42rd volume. After doing the research through the years from 2009, I realize this is my error and will begin this New Year, 2016, correctly as Volume 43.

Sunshine Corner Bev King Tom Huff was hospitalized at the VA hospital for a painful episode of diverticulitis. Tom is home now and waiting for surgery. Tom is Trollheim’s Treasurer. A card of encouragement or a phone call would be appreciated: 4425 So Nelson Street, Lakewood, CO 80226; cell phone: 720-276-6652. Vern Skari has been spending some time in the hospital with a bout of heart problems, he is home now and feeling better. Bob King is still a bit under the weather trying to gain his stamina back. We thank you for your calls and cards. Carol Neverdahl says “she got hit by a reindeer” after our December General meeting. She was found outside our lodge front door on the ground with papers askew! She reports minor damage and bruising on her hand (where the reindeer stepped on her hand, apparently) but was feeling better a couple days later. Two former members have passed away recently. Please find their obituaries on page 4. Another year has passed and an exciting year is ahead of us which includes the District Six Convention held in June of 2016. This convention is unique as all lodges of Colorado are the sponsors. Congratulations to COLORADO.

Our Financial Counselor Mike Johaneson At a recent lodge meeting, I did not have much time to give my report so I said “Buy life insurance while you can.” That brought a few chuckles and had me backtracking. I did not mean “buy insurance before you die;” I meant, “buy life insurance while you can afford it.” A 69 year-old male with standard rating would pay $465 per month for a $100,000 whole life policy. A 49 year-old male with a select rating would pay $158 per month for a $100,000 whole life policy. A 29 year-old female with a super select rating would pay $53 per month for a $100,000 whole life policy. The premium does not change so the 29 year will still be paying $53 per month when she is 69. The point is, life insurance premiums are largely driven by age and health. If you have a young child or grandchild, you would be doing them a favor if you helped them to understand this concept. If you want help, call or email me. Mike Johaneson 720 971-0130 or [email protected]

Thelma Marie Olson

1920-2015

Thelma, age 94 passed away on Friday May 01, 2015.

Born on October 14, 1920, Thelma was the daughter of Axel Olson of Lyngdal, Norway and Olga Kristine Olson of Fredrikstad, Norway. Thelma was a graduate of East High School and went on to pursue and earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Denver before joining the war efforts in Washington, DC during World War II. After the war was over, Thelma worked as a civilian for the United States Air Force in the Manpower and Organization Division. This division was responsible for Manpower Management Review, Manpower Allocation and Management Training. Thelma is survived by her family members Kimberly Ann, Cynthia Kay, Walter Scott and Christina Louise. Private interment services were held at Riverside Cemetery. What I remember about Thelma was that she always attended our dinners, especially the Smorgasbord and the Lutefisk events. She always arrived early to get the parking space beneath the parking lot light. Perhaps she did so because she felt safer when the dinner ended at dark. Thelma would stay in her car with the door open until the Lodge doors opened. She would then come in and be seated. She was always well dressed and sometimes she would wear a small hat. Always, she made a point to thank us for the dinner. Thelma was a very prim and proper, well-educated lady with a small purse under her arm. Thelma, it was a pleasure to have you as a guest and we will miss your attendance. Thelma joined Sons of Norway December 15, 2003. ---Bev King

Please report the death of any member or former member of Trollheim Lodge. Just call or email the Sunshine Director, the editor, or any other officer listed on page 11. You do not need to provide an obituary, although we appreciate the information.

Phyllis C. DeBruine

May 23, 1929 – December 19, 2015 Phyllis is the beloved wife of Russell, and mother of Brian (Joni) DeBruine and Susie DeBruine, a loving grandmother of

Amy (Luther) Augenstein and Ronald (Jules) Bain, and great-grandmother of Chase, Jesse, Dakota and Shyanne. Phyllis became a member of Trollheim on December 21, 1998. Phyllis and Russ moved from Milwaukee to Denver in 1970. Her grandparents settled in Wisconsin. Her maternal grandfather grew up on the island of Haramsoy, west of Molde, learned the tailoring trade in Trondheim and came to America in 1983. Her grandmother is from the Lofoten Islands area, and her father’s parents were from Sweden. After moving to Denver Phyllis worked for twenty-three years as a specialist in real estate closing before her retirement. The DeBruines were very active in the Butikkin for years and Phyllis was a very supporting member of the Lodge. She was a meticulous lady and a wonderful cook; a lady who always sent a greeting card, be it a birthday or thank you for a great dinner at Trollheim. She would pitch in after meetings, cleaning tables and washing dishes. Phyllis was a special lady, always a smile and was very complimentary toward Trollheim. Phyllis and Russ traveled with the first tour group from Trollheim in 1997, plus two other Trollhiem tours. Services were held at Crown Hill December 23, 2015 at 12PM in Wheat Ridge, CO. Burial followed at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Wednesday at 1:30, Staging Area B. ---Bev King

More on the Christmas Fair, Nov 6 & 7

My thanks to all that helped at the Christmas Fair on November 6th and 7th. All remarks were positive. The total guests that passed thru the doors for the two day event amounted to 1115 people. We had twenty vendors present. Thanks go to Perry Monkelien and his daughter for decorating the area in its Christmas attire. The lunch was well attended, with a new face helping with the lømpe dogs, Sandra Hagevik. Thank you Sandra. You are welcome to help at the lute dinner also! The kitchen crew spent three days in prep of the lunch and serving. Thank you. ---Bev King

Members on Tracking Memo to Trollheim Group and Individual Activities

Every year, Sons of Norway Headquarters collects every the number of events, hours, and funds that Lodges devote to membership and community activities. This information is required by the American Fraternal Alliance (AFA), of which SON is a member. The AFA uses the SON data to lobby on behalf of fraternal benefit societies, in order to maintain our tax exempt status. For the last several years, there have been many changes in the way the reporting of individual, Lodge, and community events have been reported, and this year is no exception. As we have done in the past, I need your help in reporting activities, hours, dates of activities, number of volunteers, volunteer hours, and individual activities and hours. There are basically two forms: (1) The Secretary Activity and Hour Tracking 2015; and, (2) Individual Activity Tracking Sheet.

The Individual Tracking Sheet should be used for those activities you do as one person supporting the SON and the Lodge. For example, if you do an Adopt the School event solo where you read stories to school children or do a presentation on the culture of Norway, then you would record the information on this form. But if you and others do the same event described above, then please use the Secretary Activity and Hour Tracking form because we need to note the number of volunteers and hours. Other examples of using the Individual Tracking Sheet may be the newsletter editor’s work in preparing the newsletter, or attending a meeting where you alone represent the Lodge at a District meeting or enticing someone to join, or discussing the possible rental of the Lodge, or the Treasurer paying bills and filing forms.

The Secretary Activity and Hour Tracking form is really for Lodge and community events. Examples of these events are the various dinners and cultural events we have throughout the year. Other examples are the Norwegian language classes, Rosemaling classes, Lodge cleanup activities, Dameklubben teas and meetings, History Group, running and operating the Norske Butikken, the Trollheim Building Corp., and fund raisers such as pancake breakfasts. Members do not need to report hours for attending the Board Meetings and the General Meetings. The Lodge Secretary will take care of that, since all who attend these meetings are accounted for by the book you sign at the door.

Please use one form or several pages of forms for each month. Let’s try to complete these forms by the first General Meeting in January 2016. These instructions and forms will be on the desk as you enter the Lodge. Don Peterson, Trollheim Lodge Secretary, Home phone: 303-779-5287 (Copy Individual form as needed; call if other form needed)

POSTMASTER: DATED MATERIAL

Travels in 2016

I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips, thanks to children, friends, and family.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much into physical activity anymore.

Sometimes, I've been in Flexible; sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

Life is too short for negative drama and petty things. So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly! I hope everyone is happy in your head. We're all doing pretty well in mine!
