Gratularer med dagen!
President’s Message Greetings to all! We have our new freezer. We have our ice-maker fixed and working well again. The trolls are back in the main hall again and not giving me trouble any more. I think they resented being in the Viking room so long! So, in this message, I will tell you about our trip to Lindsborg, KS. We had a fun time at the Swedish 150th Anniversary Festival and though it is a small town, we seldom saw each other! Lots of people, and I met some from Winnipeg, CA, and IA. It was nice to chat with them all. And of course, we all were Swedish for this one day! Anyway, I finally got a small group together at the Smorgasbord; front row: my husband Ray, myself and Pat LaMoe: back row: Jim and Thora Aarvig, Michael Homan, and Lois and Wilbur Doeksen. BTW-great food!
See you at the Trollheim Christmas Fair! Happy Thanksgiving Day!
November General Meeting Sat., Nov 16, 2019, at 2 pm
Snacks and finger foods, please.
Special Guest: Wendy Swallow, Author
Our General meeting guest will be Wendy Swallow, the author of Searching for Nora, a fictional story about the what happens to Nora after “A Doll’s House”. She will be talking about her book and selling and autographing the book at this meeting.
We will have a short business meeting also. Since this is our first Saturday meeting for the winter months, we will enjoy snacks and treats, savory or sweet, instead of a lunch or dinner.
Hope to see more of you at our Saturday meetings for the next Nov, Dec., Jan and Feb. As log as the weather stays fair, there is not problem with night time driving. If you want to put your name on the list for message in case of bad weather warranting a cancellation of the
meetings on Saturday, please call Elaine Homan, at 303-882-8094.

Sunshine Corner This has been a sad time for the lodges of Colorado (zone 8) as we have recently lost 2 members who have been part of Zone 8 activities over the years. Jan Hodne died in September 13 after complications in surgery. He was a member of Storfjell Lodge in Grand County, and was quite active with the Barnelopet held in Granby for the past several years. In 2014-2016, he also served on the board of the 2016 District Six Convention, which was held in Loveland and hosted by all seven of the Colorado Lodges. Barbara Robb, member of Fjelldalen in south Denver, and a former member of Trollheim died Oct 9 of a heart attack. She was an organizer of the 2002 convention in Colorado, and served as the Zone 8 Director in District Six, several years ago.
Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation, October 3, 1863
It is the duty of nations as well as of people to own their
dependence upon the overruling power of God; to confess
their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with
assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the
Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations
are blessed whose God is the Lord.
We know that by His divine law, nations, like individuals, are
subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world. May we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war
which now desolates the land may be a punishment inflicted
upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our
national reformation as a whole people?
We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of
heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power
as no other nation has ever grown.
But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious
hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched
and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were
produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.
Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-
sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving
grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.
It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one
heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do
therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United
States, and also those who are at sea and those who are
sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last
Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father Who dwelleth in the heavens.
It's been 156 years since Abe Lincoln made this proclamation, but it still amazes me that it is still fresh for our modern times. -editor

Remember in September, David Broome came to talk about his time in Norway, and his beautiful pics of the Aurora Borealis? Here’s some more interesting facts about the borealis effect.
Season of Dazzling
Northern Lights
The phenomenon known as “Northern Lights” is most commonly seen in the northern hemisphere of our planet between the months of October and March. The lights are described to be magical, dramatic and utterly dazzling. If you are fortunate enough to experience the display, you’ll see a ray of dancing greens, yellows, violets and reds; on a rare occurrence, you could even spot some oranges and whites. Here are eight more interesting facts about Northern Lights, officially known as Aurora Borealis, and some of the most amazing pictures you have ever seen.
1. Astronauts at the International Space Station are at the same altitude as the Northern Lights.
2. No two Northern Lights are ever the same! They always have different patterns and colors.
3. During heavy solar storms, Northern lights are visible as far south as Texas.
4. Sometimes you can even hear the sound waves! Viewers have claimed to hear a whooshing or crackling noise.
5. The color of each aurora depends on the gas particles.
6. The aurora borealis is considered one the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
7. Northern Lights occur due to the sun’s charged particles colliding with the oxygen and nitrogen atoms found in the Earth’s atmosphere.
8. The best places to watch the aurora in North America are the northwestern parts of Canada and Alaska. In Europe, the northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Recipe: Serina Kaker from Fjelldalen Nyett; Thank you!
INGREDIENTS 2 large eggs 1 cup sugar 4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder, 3 sticks salted butter, softened 1/2 cup sugar cubes, coarse crushed, or pearl sugar PREPARATION Beat together 1 egg and sugar with an electric mixer until thick and pale. Sift in flour and baking powder and add butter. Beat on low speed until mixture forms a dough. Chill, wrapped in plastic wrap, until firm, at least 1 hour. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly beat remaining egg. Roll level teaspoons of dough into balls and arrange 1 inch apart on un-greased baking sheets. Press thumb into center of each ball to flatten, leaving a depression, and brush lightly with egg. Sprinkle crushed sugar in centers and bake in batches in middle of oven until golden, 12 to 18 minutes. Transfer to racks to cool completely.

Coming to Trollheim on Nov 16, at our General Meeting
NOVELIST WENDY SWALLOW AND THE SEARCH FOR NORA HELMER OF
A DOLL’S HOUSE
Nora Helmer, heroine of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, has fascinated theater goers for decades. She’s a loving wife and mother who walks out on her difficult marriage at the end of the play with a defiant slam of the door. Yet she has no plan and scarcely any money – her purpose is flight. The audience is left to ponder what will become of her, and of the three young children she left behind.
Twelve years ago, author Wendy Swallow set out to answer that question. Her new novel, Searching for Nora: After the Doll’s House, follows Nora as she struggles to make a life for herself in Kristiania (now Oslo) and then escapes Norway in disguise, a passenger on an emigrant ship and soon a reluctant settler in the harsh Minnesota prairie.
On Nov. 16, Wendy will join the SON Trollheim Lodge (Lakewood, CO) to talk about her own search for Nora – on the streets and in the parlors of Oslo and Bergen, in the grasslands of Western Minnesota and in the written words of 19th-century Norwegian immigrants and Norway’s early feminists.
Searching for Nora follows Nora’s path over four decades and weaves in the story of a second character, Solveig Lange, a young university student in Norway in 1918. Solveig seeks to unravel the mysteries of her grandfather’s hidden shame and the fate of a long-vanished Norwegian feminist.
Wendy’s work of historical fiction is grounded in careful research into late-19th century Norway – A Doll’s House was first staged in December 1879, and Searching for Nora opens just after Christmas in 1879 – and into the bleak life that Norwegian
immigrants found on the American frontier. With the same care, Wendy delved deeply into the intentions and thematic interests of Norway’s Ibsen, Nora’s creator and one of the great dramatists of the modern era. A Doll’s House remains one of the world’s most often produced plays. Wendy’s efforts produced a work that is true to Nora’s time, while also offering readers a dramatic story line and themes that still resonate today.
Searching for Nora is Wendy’s third book. In 2001 and 2004 Wendy wrote (and Hyperion Books published) two non-fiction memoirs that explored many of the themes in Searching for Nora: love, family, self-determination, truthfulness and forgiveness.
Wendy began her writing career as business reporter at the Washington Post. She then became a journalism professor at American University in Washington, DC, becoming one of the most respected teachers on American’s journalism faculty. In 2007, after nearly two decades in the classroom, Wendy left academia to begin working on her novel about Nora Helmer. She lives in Reno, NV, and on Cape Cod, MA, with her husband Charles Shepard.
Here is an early review of Searching for Nora:
“So much more than a sequel, Searching for Nora is a masterful tale that spans generations, continents, and the intertwined lives of two remarkable women. Lyrically told and meticulously researched, this unforgettable saga transports you from the fjords of Norway to the wide-open plains of the American west. I couldn’t put it down.” – Joanne Lipman, author of That’s What She Said: What Men Need to Know (and Women Need to Tell Them) About Working Together, No. 1 bestseller at The Washington Post.
You can learn more about Wendy and the novel, and get information about buying her book, at

Support our Scholarship Fund!
I know we have heard from Bev Moe at several General Meetings this year about the funds we can receive from King Soopers. But it takes more of our members, and our friends and relatives to keep this money coming in. It is a great source of funds for the scholarships we award to the students who need extra funds for college. Sons of Norway has a great tradition over many years to encourage our younger members to further their education; scholarships are offered at the International level, District level and local level (our lodge, for instance.) It is a worthwhile fund to continue to support. Today, we are asking for your support for our Trollheim Scholarship fund. This fund is not supported by dues. We need to continuously raise funds for it.
For your information, the Trollheim Scholarship fund has been funding several students for over 40 years through several activities. We have become lax in our efforts due to a lack of interest or the lack of desire to put much effort into fund-raising. Our fund has been shrinking for a few years now.
Students who apply recently have been given $750 - $1000 which doesn’t go as far as it used to go to pay tuition, books and materials for
school. But even a little can help a student. I would hate to see the amount shrink down to $500 or less in the upcoming years.
Bev Moe has found a great way to gain income for this Scholarship Fund through the King Soopers Community Rewards Program. It’s an easy thing to do.
Do you buy food? Shampoo? Pet food? Anything? If you go to King Soopers, this is a painless way to help us, and it costs you….NOTHING! Except for the time to sign up for the Rewards Program, it is also, PAINLESS! And signing up is easy to do.
Bev Moe has included a card for this newsletter that explains how to sign up. There is even a phone # for those who can’t figure out the directions. If you don’t have a computer, get your relatives or friends who do have one, and they can sign you up or sign themselves up for Trollheim also. There is no need to be a member.
After you have signed up, your purchases at King Soopers will be tallied and a percentage is given to Trollheim (or whatever charity is specified.) There is nothing else you need to do…except shop! Please use these instructions to get started and become a part of our Scholarship Program.

In Norse mythology, Ullr (pronounced Oool-er) is
called the God of Snow, Patron Saint of Skiers, the son
of Sif and stepson of Thor. Cold-loving, bow-wielding
Ullr is said to be an expert skater, skier and hunter
who would glide across the earth and cover it with
snow to protect it from harm. Legend has it he would
streak across the sky leaving the brilliant stars as his
trails. He was so skilled at hunting and skiing that no
one could beat him.
Ullr guarded his knowledge closely and refused to
show the other gods how to ski.

NOTICE:
This is a reminder that in
November, 2020, we will
have elections for new
officers.
I will not be running for
President or any other
position. I have several
health issues and I need to
take care of myself in the
future.
I wish to let the membership
know that I have made this
decision but I still plan to
fulfill my commitment for
this term for the Presidency
from 2019-2020. This gives
the membership one year to
consider other possible
candidates for this job for
2021-2022.
Trollheim’s President is a
position that requires a
flexible schedule regarding
time. It is a rewarding
position and I have enjoyed
my time as your president,
but I feel that my health is
interfering with that goal.
I will, of course be willing
to help the new president
learn the job and provide
support for the next year.
Please, give some thought
for a new President in the
next 12 months.
