exam excellence at Tabby Road Studios
George Collins from Thorney
village attained excellent marks
in the Trinity drum kit exams on 20th
April 2015, hosted at Tabby Road
Music School.
He was one of eleven candidates
to achieve an incredible total of six
Distinctions and five Merits!
Phil and Jane at Tabby Road would
like to congratulate all their pupils
on their consistent high standard of
playing!
Well done all - next event is
TABBYFEST on Sat 22nd August.
Mr Jim Porter of Marton
I hope you all heard the applause at
Marton Chapel about 4.30pm on
Sunday April 19th.
Mr Jim Porter our chapel treasurer,
treasure and popular friend was
90-years-young that day and a
birthday tea had been arranged by
chapel members for Jim’s family and
friends.
Jim is a very well-known man having
always lived and worked in the area,
we had to limit the party numbers to
60 but many more sent best wishes
and cards.
After tea there were numerous
congratulations for Jim including
special poems, readings and solos. A
handmade card and cake depicting
Jim’s interests, plus a large portrait
were greatly admired. The party
closed with everybody singing Jim’s
favourite hymn “When I Survey
the Wondrous Cross”. There are
eight crosses in Marton Chapel all
handcrafted by Jim.
Many generous donations have
enabled Jim to choose a teak garden
seat. We all hope he will find the time
to sit on it!
A Thank You fromMr Porter
Thank you…two small words that
seem so inadequate to say for
the wonderful garden seat, tea, and
fellowship at the party for my 90th
birthday. Thanks to all who donated
and attended. Special thanks to Mrs
K and helpers for all the hard work
and for all my cards.
God Bless
Jim

Dear residents of the parish of
Fenton and Torksey Lock,
There being an insufficient number
of submissions for seats on the
parish council there will be no
election held for these vacancies,
therefore the council members prior
to the scheduled election on May
the 7th will automatically remain as
councillors.
At the first meeting of the new
term, which is to be held in the
Kettlethorpe village hall on May 14th
at 7pm, the council will appoint a
chairperson and all the relevant
officers. In order to keep all of
the parish residents informed of
matters relating to the parish, a
new noticeboard has been erected
in Fenton Fields by myself and ex-
councillor John Mannion and paid for
by the parish council.
The posts for the new board together
with the varnish for them were
supplied free of charge by John
who also organised not only the
new board saving the community
in the excess of £1000, but also
the refurbishment of the board at
Torksey Lock was included in that
price.
Once again John, we are indebted to
you and thank you for your efforts
and generosity in this matter. The
council would also like to thank Mr
Paul Wojna for his splendid work in
refurbishing the notice board which
stands opposite the Carpenters Arms
in Fenton, which Paul did free of
charge.
In conclusion, may I remind you
that the parish council is still two
members short of its designated
strength. If you feel concerned about
matters occurring within the parish
and feel you are able to give just
two hours a month to help resolve
them, then please contact any council
member or the parish clerk who will
be able to advise you about being co-
opted as a councillor. Alternatively,
attend a council meeting and see
whether or not it’s for you. Anyone
who is over 18-years-of-age and
resides in the parish is eligible.
Tony Longmate, Parish Councillor.

St. Mary’s Knaith - Snowdrop Walk“everybody’s in it together”
This was a comment from a
visitor to the Snowdrop Walk on
February 22nd, she’d taken one look
at the array of cakes on display and
gasped, ‘Who’s
baked all these?’
It was explained
that many people
in Knaith and the
village of Knaith
Park had baked
for the event, and
that in fact all the jobs that needed to
be done to make sure the day went
according to plan were taken on by
a whole army of people from both
communities.
Jobs such as taking entrance
fees outside in the freezing wind,
playing the organ in church (such
a treat!), giving ‘personal tours’ of
the church’s history, marking out
the walks, setting out the china
for refreshments, oh and lighting
a huge log fire, filling the urn, and
serving cakes, tea and coffee non-
stop for hours, backed by a team in
the kitchen who cheerfully washed
up and dried pots continually, and
John and Rosie whose gardens were
a delight and who opened up their
Knaith Hall home for the day. They’ve
also marked out a marvellous round
walk from Knaith
Hall which takes
you along the
riverbank to the
Chateau at Gate
Burton, a rare
opportunity to
view this amazing
building at close range. A few people
battled against the strong cold wind
coming hard at them from the River
Trent to achieve this walk, and arrived
back red cheeked and rosy for a well
deserved cup of tea and cake!
‘Well,’ said the visitor, ‘so you’re all
in it together!’ And someone else
said, ‘It’s a real community event.’
And it is. We all rely on each other
to make sure it happens, and that
people get to know about it and come
along, it works, and it’s such good
fun, everyone enjoys it, especially
over 300 people who walked by the
river, who marvelled at the swathes
of snowdrops and bright yellow
aconites, who, along with all those
people who contributed their time
and effort to the day have helped
raise over £1070 to help pay the bills
for St. Mary’s Church, and something
else happened, we achieved this
together, all of us, and that’s what
really counts. Thank you. And again,
thank you very much.

March 2015
Our Annual General Meeting on 17th
March may seem a long time ago
to our readers now on the brink of
summer but it was the time to recall
our activities in the past year as well
as to plan for our immediate future.
It was also the time to give thanks to
members who had achieved special
moments in our year. Vivienne Elliott
for instance, who had won eight of
the monthly competitions combined
with Pat Green and Barbara Taylor
(who had stopped her winning any
more). Rita Atkin, whose cross stitch
picture of our meeting place has been
selected to hang in our new county
offices in Horncastle.
The president advised of the new
ways for visiting Lincoln castle,
also the cathedral. From April 1st
a joint ticket for both places can be
purchased, and it does not have to be
used for both on the same day
The treasurer gave a report on
finances and said that £226 had
been raised for the air ambulances.
Later Steve Underwood, who received
this on their behalf, gave a report on
their past and present activities and
advancement, beginning in Cornwall
but now having nineteen overall, our
nearest station is at Waddington.
Coloured yellow like the AA it does
about a thousand missions a year
including localised night flights, and
can reach 154 miles an hour, though
can be grounded in fog. On the
good side it can be in the air within
five minutes and land on either
motorways or train tracks.
The secretary’s report was given
by Ann Dolling who confirmed the
number of members at 47. She

President Janet Willcock spoke about
her first year in office, saying that
though slightly fearful at first she had
really enjoyed herself as time went
on. Other members of the committee
had been so helpful and now she was
looking forward to growing into all
the interests of whatever the future
brings, with a good team. There were
three members of the ‘team’ retiring
after long service, Linda Mullally,
Jackie Gee and Vivienne Elliott, though
Vivienne re-appears on the new list
with a part responsibility for two jobs.
Therefore we now have:
Ann Dolling - Secretary
Vivienne Elliott - Vice President &
Assistant Secretary
Ann Lister - Treasurer
Rita Atkin - Raffle & Register
Sylvia Johnson - Competitions Barbara
Gilbert – Programme &
Social Secretary
Lynne Peters - Assistant Treasurer
Barbara Watson - Refreshments
Christine Fogg - Book Sales
Ann Close - WI Posters
Barbara Gilbert and Ann Lister are

Our meeting closed with refreshments
and looking forward to more
companionship.
April 2015
Minutes of the March meeting were
approved. The president informed us
that a centenary garden party was
to be held at Buckingham Palace on
June 7th. More centenary events are
to come, one taking place at Market
Rasen for Lincolnshire North, and
a fayre to be held in Harrogate on
September 3rd! It is hoped to have a
group visit arranged for the latter.
A competition was announced entitled
‘A Futuristic Look at the WI in One
Hundred Years’ Time.’ This will be
in the form of an annual report for
2015 in no more than 500 words. The
closing date for this will be July 9th
2015.
A thank you has been received from
the Notts and Lincs Air Ambulance for
our donation of £226.50.
The federation pantomime ‘Simple
Simon’ was enjoyed by members
attending on 17th April at Saxilby.
Also a large number of members
attended the Gainsborough theatre to
see ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ on the
previous evening the group had met at
Sturton Methodist Hall where Karen
Crow, the Lincoln town crier gave an
enjoyable (and of course extremely
audible) talk.
On this June 4th there will be life
screening at Sturton village hall. The
president also read out the 2015
Resolution ‘Assessment of Need
in Longterm Care’. We were also
reminded that the Lincolnshire Show
would be held on 24/25th June should
anyone wish to enter one of the WI
categories.
A report was read out concerning
the recent Skegness meeting held
in March. The main speaker (after
transaction of business) was the
antique dealer Eric Knowles who had
been well received for his amusing
talk.
On Saturday May 16th there will be a
workshop in Kettlethorpe village hall
given by Jules, who came to a recent
meeting with her beads and scarves.
Also at Kettlethorpe, our group is
manning a stall for the church garden
fete; another day to celebrate our 100
years!
Lastly the members were entertained
by ‘Feet First’ Adrian Ley and his son.
Adrian told us he had trained in a
circus and done circus workshops in
various parts of the world - including
with the cast of Barnum. A perfonner
for eighteen years he had also
arranged street entertainment and
children’s parties. His three children
also had interest in the circus arts.
Demonstration with juggling balls,
batons and knives followed. Adrian
showed us his costumes and his son
demonstrated the unicycle, before
members were invited to ‘have a
go’ themselves at spinning plates,
juggling, and the hula hoop.
The raffle was won by Chris East,
Sharon Mosedale, Yvonne Redgrove,
Lynne Peters, Jackie Gee and Vivienne
Elliott. The competition for an item
connected with a circus was won by
Rosemary Procter, followed by Pat
Starker and Janet Willcock.

May 20
15 Issue 183 We would like to express our
appreciation to Roger, who
drove all the way from Newcastle-
under-Lyme to give a most enjoyable
and informative talk on the life of
Katherine Swynford, the Lady of
Kettlethorpe.
How on earth did the
Lady of the manor of
Kettlethorpe become
so significant in English
history and in the
English (now British),
royal family?
Basically she became the
mistress and then third
wife of John of Gaunt and bore him
four illegitimate children; John, Henry,
Thomas and Joan. Katherine and
John were married in 1396 and their
children were made legitimate by
decree of the pope and King Richard
II.
Lady Katherine is, therefore, the
stepmother of Henry IV (who referred
to her in her second widowhood
as ‘the King’s Mother’) - John and
Katherine are the great-great-
grandparents of Henry VII through
their son John (Earl of Somerset).
Henry VII founded the Tudor dynasty
(which included Henry VIII and
Elizabeth I) and became King after
defeating Richard III at the Battle
of Bosworth in the final stage of
the Wars of the Roses. Katherine
and John are great-great-great-
grandparents of Henry VIII; great-
great-great-great-grandparents of
Elizabeth I. The Scottish House of
Stuart is also descended from them
through John the Earl of Somerset’s
daughter Joan, who married James I
of Scotland - and the present Queen
of the UK is descended
from John and Katherine.
Born in Hainaut in
modern day Belgium,
Katherine came to
England with her father,
Sir Paon de Roet, who
was attached to the
household of Philippa
of Hainaut, wife of King
Edward III.
Nothing much is known of Hugh
Swynford until his marriage to
Katherine. It would seem that
the marriage was arranged under
the auspices of Queen Philippa of
Hainault and was not to Katherine’s
liking. Unusually, they did not remain
at court after their
marriage. It would
appear that Hugh
offended someone, the
registers state that
he was sent back to
Kettlethorpe to wait
the time when and if
his services as a fighter
should be required!
Hugh had left home at about the
age of 15 to join up Edward III’s army
which was invading Scotland. During
this period he first met John of Gaunt,
then Earl of Richmond, and they
appear to have established some
rapport.
Hugh then appears again fighting for
the Black Prince at Poitiers, It would
seem to be at this time that Hugh
was knighted and returned home.
Hugh then goes to London, with
squire in tow to do knights’ service
to the Duke of Lancaster, his feudal
overlord. Hugh owned a manor at
Coleby that belonged to John’s manor
of Richmond.
He does not appear to have had
much time for chivalry and earthly
pursuits. However, he was a “damn
good soldier” and is described in the
registers as “a shrewd and terrifying
fighter”.
It would seem that this exile was
short-lived, however, just long
enough for him to collect his rents,
sort out manor affairs, settle
Katherine into her
new home and depart
in August 1366 for
Aquitaine. John of Gaunt
and Edward, the Black
Prince, were entering
into war in Castile with
King Pedro against
his brother Henry of
Trastamere, who had
usurped the throne.
Katherine was with child when he
left and Hugh obviously confided
this fact to John. Again, the registers
record that Katherine was escorted to

Bolingbroke to spend Christmas and
New Year with Duchess Blanche who
was herself with child.
Hugh was sent back to Lincoln
shortly after having taken part in the
battle of Najera and distinguishing
himself again as a good warrior and
battle tactician. No more is heard of
either Hugh or Katherine until 1369
by which time they had a son, named
Thomas after his grandfather.
Hugh and Katherine’s relationship
had mellowed, but Katherine appears
to have been quite pleased to go to
Bolingbroke to wait on the Duchess
Blanche. Sadly, by the time she
arrived, Blanche was dying of plague.
Katharine nursed her and was able
to locate a priest to give her the last
rights. It would then appear that
Hugh sanctioned Katherine’s journey
to London in Blanche’s funeral train.
Quite what happened when she got
to London is not really certain, but
Katharine returned to Kettlethorpe
as an armiger (a person entitled to
use a coat of arms) in her own right.
Her blazon was designed, bestowed
and registered by John of Gaunt. He
also rewarded her, as a pension, “all
issues from, and profits from his
towns of Waddington and Wellingore
to be paid yearly”. Hugh was, not
unnaturally, not too happy, but
seems to have accepted the reason
for the gift. This was “for the care
shown to the late Duchess and for
the Lancastrian children after their
mother’s death”.
It is known that John and Katherine
disappeared for several weeks
prior to his second marriage, and
presumably this is when she became
his mistress. She returned to England
and was obviously pregnant because
she gave birth to John, later John
Beaufort. It was assumed that John
was Hugh’s posthumous child (Hugh
by this time having died of wounds
in Bordeaux), but when Henry was
born to John and Katherine, they
acknowledged him as their son.

Lister’s Timber and Builders
Merchants held an ‘Open Day’
on Friday 24th April. Father and
son team Charlie and Adam Lister
have invested heavily in their
family business recently with a
new purpose-built shop and office
building in their yard at Newton-on-
Trent.
The thriving timber and builders
merchants had outgrown its previous
building which had limited office
and retail space. Charlie said: “The
new shop and offices were crucial
to assist in the growth of our
business and to maintain the high
level of service and quality that our
customers expect”. Since the opening
of the new shop Lister’s have
continued to flourish, increasing their
employee numbers from 14 to 18.
Lister’s Timber and Builders
Merchants was established over 40
years ago, then Charlie purchased
the company in 1994 and went on to
buy the site from his father in 2000.
With a large customer base far and
wide, they cater for all needs, running
two heavy goods vehicles and two
transits.
The business originally traded
second-hand timber back when
Charlie was only 16-years-old,
growing from strength to strength
they now sell all manner of products
to both trade and individuals,
including fencing, decking, gates,
sheds, block paving, timber, sheet
materials, decorative aggregates,
natural stone, artificial grass, and

Sir Edward Leigh who officially
opened the shop on Friday 20th

example of a small independent
merchant, holding its own against
larger national companies in a
rural location. Not only have they
survived one of the worst recessions
since the 1920s when many other
merchants have fallen, but they have
managed to come out fighting with
improvements to the yard and a
stunning new shop and offices”.

As a local entrepreneur for over
10 years Sam Atkinson knows
how to build a successful business,
having already built his electrical
business - Atkin & Co Limited over
the last 4 years, he and his wife Laura
decided to take on a new challenge,
they started their second company
earlier this year dealing with home &
commercial automation products and
installations.
Home & commercial automation is a
rapidly growing business with little
representation in the Lincolnshire
area. They spent 2014 working out
their ideas and business plans at
evenings and weekends around their
already busy schedule of moving to
Fenton and getting married, they took
the plunge in early 2015, they sourced
the perfect location for Lincolnshire’s
first showroom and got their keys
on the 1st February 2015, they were
elated with the results five weeks
later on their launch night.
So what is home automation I hear
you say? With automation you can
have the heat kick in when you are
driving home from the airport or
schedule your blinds or curtains to
open halfway in sequence with the
sun. The possibilities are endless.

Inhabitants of the tiny Lincolnshire
hamlet of Fenton have been waking
up to a new kind of tree blossoming
in their neighbourhood this Spring.
The tree in question appears to be
sprouting pieces of knitting from
its branches and is in fact Fenton’s
very first experience of the world-
wide phenomenon known as yarn
bombing. The woolly installation is
the creation of lifelong knitter and
Fenton resident, Sue Ricketts and
features random scraps of stripy
knitting on colourful plastic needles.
‘Our little damson tree didn’t appear
to have any real blossom this year,’
said Sue, ‘so I decided to pretty it
up with some knitted decorations.
Who knows? Maybe they will
eventually form fruit, or, at the very
least, provide some warm shelter for
nesting birds.’
Sue has been running the Fenton
Knitting Group at her home since
last September. Her ‘ladies’ meet
on Tuesday evenings for a knit and
natter. Sue enjoys knitting more
unusual items and numbers, among
her crazier projects, knitted pigeons,
seagulls, fairy lights and even French
knickers.
Since moving back to her home
county of Lincolnshire she has
completed a knitted Lincoln imp and
her latest creation, a steampunk doll,
named Polly. To view Sue’s knitted
tree, just head to Fenton. If you’d
like to join the Fenton Knitting Group,
please contact Sue.

The Fenton Knitting Group meet
on a Tuesday at 6pm and when
Mr Chris Fowler of Kettlethorpe heard
this he kindly donated a knitting
machine for us to use.
We were all a little unsure how to use
it but knew that it would be fun to try,
so we enlisted the help of Elizabeth
Rose of Torksey who is also our
distributor, delivering over 90 copies
of Trentside Links to the Torksey
area.
So thanks to Elizabeth’s guidance
we are now up and running with the
knitting machine and keen to try out
lots of new projects.
A big thank you to Chris, so now you
know it is being put to good use!

As you will be aware from the
last edition, Torksey Play Area
officially opened on Saturday the
18th of April. The weather was very
good, with brilliant sunshine, which
encouraged many to wear their
shorts and T-shirts. Following many
months of fundraising as well as
going through the planning process,
phase one of the project received
a great welcome from Torksey
residents and those neighbouring
villagers who came to support the
project.
Children entered into the games
(obstacle race; egg & spoon; wellie
wanging etc) enthusiastically, with
parents, grandparents and friends all
cheering them on – certificates being
awarded to the first three children in
each event. At the end of the day all
the children received a medallion on a
ribbon to commemorate the opening
of the play area.
Even the adults could not resist
participating in the wellie wanging,
with some impressive distances
being achieved by both mums and
dads, although it was the ‘minus’
throw – the wellie went backwards –
which received the biggest cheer!
During the afternoon a presentation
- the Freedom of the Parish – was
made to John Kinch, acknowledging
his many years of service to the
parish.
The afternoon concluded with a hog
roast for all.
It was a very successful day which all
seemed to enjoy and we raised £280
in the process!
Phase 2 of the project is now under
way, the aim being to purchase a
basket swing, particularly suitable
for children with a disability; cradle
swings for the very young; swings
and slide. Fundraising has already
started. Additionally, a villager has
volunteered to dedicate his Iron Man
event, to be held in Sweden in August,
to raise funds for the play area. If you
would like to make a donation, no
matter how small, it would be greatly
appreciated and can be made via
Roger Pilgrim, Parish Clerk, on 01427

Using our wheelchair-accessible minibuses, driven by one of our team of fully trained volunteer drivers, we provide our vulnerable clients with an opportunity to visit places in the country that they may otherwise be
unable to go to.
Clients can also purchase tickets for family members, carers and friends to accompany them and make the trip perfect for their day out.
Even our clients who don’t use a wheelchair can book to come on the trips as our minibuses are flexible to add or remove seats as required for ambulant passengers. Our trips set out on Saturdays throughout the
year and will pick you up and drop you straight outside your home.

of interest in the UK. Being driven by fully trained and considerate volunteers our service helps reduce isolation caused by lack of suitable transport and is a real feather in the cap for Lincoln and its surrounding
area’.
If you struggle to use public transport due to age and/or disability and live within 6 miles of Lincoln city centre you can register with us for only £10 per year. Once registered, in addition the Days Out Trips you

From June 1st 2015 the East Trent Group of churches will be without a rector. The parishes will put together a statement telling prospective ministers about our villages, our hopes and vision for the future of our
churches and we will wait and pray for the right person to come along! Somewhere out there is a solution. Pray with us and watch this space.

Church is open every Thursday from 2.30-4pm for quiet prayer and contemplation. There are candles to light and cards to write
concerns or thanks on. Your comments may then be used in prayer during future services. Thank you.
A coffee morning is held to coincide with the library van visit every four weeks. Next dates are: Wednesday 10th June, 8th July, 5th August, and 2nd September. Come along for a hot drink and some homemade biscuits any time between 10.30 and 12 noon.
Children visiting in August may choose a book to be read to them.
We collect on a regular basis for the Trussell Trust, who work with the homeless and families in trauma in the Newark area. Tinned
or packet foods and household items can be brought along when church is open. Thanks for all of your generous donations in the past. We will have one more collection during June and July, as
we collect for FRAMEWORK at our harvest celebration.
We look forward to seeing you.Anne Massey, Churchwarden
