DESCRIPTION

Our publication is the only one of its kind in the Metro Detroit area. It reaches many geographic areas while having a common thread through them all, its very specific target – the Jewish home. There is a spectrum of types within the Jewish Community, including many in which these homes have chosen not to allow secular media into their homes – whether it be a TV, the newspaper, magazines, the radio and even the Internet. The Community Links has a very high standard as not to offend any of our readers. Although its pages are primarily filled with advertisements, it also has pictures of community events, synagogue schedules, articles pertaining to Jewish law and ethics, a classified section, a “give-away” free section and even a kosher recipe! Therefore, our publication STAYS in the home, is circulated throughout the family and is read from cover to cover!

The chart shows the difference in accumulation after ten years’ time of the cash value of the whole life product versus the index’s rate of return. The whole life policy was purchased in 1999 for a 35-year-old, non-smoking male; $648 annual premium plus $14,352 lump sum payment for paid up additional insurance.Return is net of annual premium obligation. Results may vary depending on age, class and gender. The 3.91% average annual rate of return and $22,005 cash value shown reflect the increase in the policy’s total cash value. “Guaranteed growth” refers to the sum of the guaranteed cash value of both the base policy and the paid up additional insurance minus the initial payment ($2,862). Dividends are not guaranteed. Cash value is accessible through loans, which accrue interest, and surrenders. Both reduce the total cash value and death benefit, and unpaid loan interest could result in the policy lapsing. Cash value of a whole life insurance policy begins accumulating at the end of the first policy year. Guarantees are dependent upon the claims paying ability of the issuer. This chart also shows the hypothetical historical performance of a $15,000 investment which tracks the returns of the S&P 500 index. S&P 500® is a trademark of theMcGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and is widely regarded as the standard for measuring large-cap U.S. stock market performance. Returns reflect reinvestment of all income and capital gain distribution, and an investment cannot be made directly into an index. Past performance is not indicative of future results. Chicago Rabbinical Council Guide to Starbucks Beverages

April 8, 2011Over the years, Starbucks shops have evolved from simple coffee shops to stores that serve many kosher and non-kosher items, with the most serious non-kosher items being hot meat sandwiches. The standard daily clean-up at Starbucks includes a hot wash of all utensils and some parts of that washing are done without soap. This washing process challenges the kosher status of the otherwise kosher products and each product must be judged by a competent halachic authority.

When evaluating these issues, Rav Schwartz Shlit”a, Av Beis Din of the cRc, acknowledged that there is basis for being lenient on many of the items being sold at Starbucks stores, but directed the cRc to be true to the mission of a reliable Kashrus Agency which only recommends items that are free of all shailos and not those which are only acceptable b’dieved.

Rav Schwartz Shlit”a noted that this is especially true when there is a viable alternative which is not subject to the same shailos, and indeed there are many Starbucks locations that do not serve hot meat sandwiches. These are generally the Starbucks kiosks that can be found in airports, highway rest-stops, supermarkets etc., and at these locations the cRc is able to recommend any drink made from kosher ingredients (even though some items in those stores are not kosher certified). [Please be aware that some kiosks (mostly in department stores) share sinks and other equipment with nearby eateries; those Starbucks facilities have the status of full-service stores noted below.]

To fully explain the details, questions, and shailos involved in this issue the cRc printed an analysis of the topic in the Spring 2011 edition of The Journal of Halacha and Contemporary Society, and that article is available on the cRc website. Rabbi Fishbein, administrator of the cRc will be in Detroit on Sunday, May 8, and will address the community about this topic. Join us at Agudath Israel/ Magen Avraham 15751 Lincoln, Southfield, at 8:15.

The following list is accurate at this time for stores in the United States, and since the information is subject to change this list should not be used after July 31, 2011. [The list is limited to beverages and does not address foods sold in Starbucks (e.g. sandwiches), or toppings and other items added to beverages.] It is also worth noting that many items sold at Starbucks are dairy and chalav stam.

Your son is in the eighth grade and you have been busy making arrangements for his Bar Mitzva cel-ebration. Much planning is done to ensure that this

momentous occasion will be most meaningful and memorable. However, even more important is deciding where to

send him for Mesivta. With all the distractions of our urban communities, many parents opt to send their sons to an out-of-town Mesivta. What criteria should be used to de-cide which Yeshiva is best for your son?

Parents want to know whether the Yeshiva will super-vise their son’s growth. They also place great emphasis on whether their son will develop his Yiras Shomayim as he progresses in his studies. Importantly, they want to see their bochur “shteig” or maximize his potential in learning.

Research has shown that the best educational matrix has a teacher/student ratio that does not exceed 1:8. In this environment, a Rebbe or teacher can pay careful attention to each student and address his individual needs. Parents are secure in the knowledge that their son is not merely progressing but rather growing to his full potential.

The Yeshiva of New Haven may be exactly the right choice for your son.

Located in a small town setting in New Haven, Connecticut, just 90 minutes from NYC, their campus covers a square block that includes a restored, historic school building, dormitory houses, outdoor recreation area, fields, and housing for Rebbeim. Under the personal and capable guidance of the revered Rosh HaYeshiva, HaRav Daniel Greer, Shlita, the talmidim of Yeshiva of New Haven develop into Bnei Torah with refined personal character. The bochurim are then able to continue their Torah learning in excellent Batei Midrash. The advanced general studies program prepares students for acceptance to elite colleges, including Yale University.

•The secret of the yeshiva’s success is commitment to small class size.

With a rebbe-student ratio no greater than 1:8, the Yeshiva of New Haven is uniquely able to fulfill the mission of maximizing a talmid’s full po-tential in all areas of personal growth and instilling a lifelong love of learning and sensitivity for Bein Adam L’Chaveiro.

They foster strong Rebbi-Talmid relation-ships that facilitate the Talmid’s development of an approach to life within a Torah frame-work. Their faculty of warm, dedicated Rebbeim and teachers provide a nurturing environment for the students as they pay individual attention to each talmid’s needs. The Rebbeim, who live on campus, are always available for each talmid in and out of the classroom to provide support and mentoring wherever needed. The caring teachers are there after school when extra instruction is needed.

The comprehensive Limudei Kodesh curriculum places a strong emphasis on teaching the skills that enable students to read and analyze Gemara with Rishonim and Acharonim, Halacha, Tanach with Meforshim and Hashkafa indepen-dently. Students are well prepared to continue their Torah studies in the finest Yeshivos here and in Eretz Yisroel. Grad-uates have attended Brisk, Heichal HaTorah, Toras Moshe, Merkaz HaTorah and Kerem B’Yavneh, among others.

The Yeshiva provides its students with a rigorous, college preparatory academic program. Their four year plan affords students the opportunity to gain entry to the college of their choice.

•In LIMUDEI KODESH, TALMIDIM study four MESECHTOS of Gemara B’Iyun as they progress through Rishonim and Acharonim. They also complete the entire Mesechta in Bekiyus Seder. The emphasis is on reading and analytical skills to develop the talmid’s connection to learning that will last a lifetime.

Talmidim of the Yeshiva also study Chumash and Rashi to completion over the course of four years. Additionally, they learn large segments of the first two Chalokim of Mishna Berura with the Mechaber and Rama along with many other Halachos of the Yomim Tovim.

Shiurim on Hashkafa and Tefillah are an integral part of the program. During Night Seder, the talmidim study Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, Zichru Toras Moshe on Hilchos Shabbos, and Sefer Shmuel Aleph and Beis.

To produce well rounded bochurim, the Yeshiva includes shiurim on Jewish History covering the periods from Bayis Sheni through the middle ages to modern times. The talmidim are inculcated with Torah Hashkafa on current events and issues of importance to the frum community. Ninth graders

also learn about the Jewish calendar based on the first two Perakim of Meseches Rosh Hashana, Ramban al HaTorah and some high school level astronomy texts.

•The Yeshiva’s general studies program is designed to develop critical thinking, research skills, and written and oral ex-pression. Their English course of study emphasizes literature, grammar, vocabu-lary, and expository writing. These aspects are studied separately and then incorpo-rated into an integrated curriculum. The students also develop their writing skills to produce clear and logical essays with grace and style.

The History program covers U.S. history from pre-revolution to the present as well as European History in 12th grade. Students gain an understanding of the major historical, geographic, societal, political and economic forces and events that have shaped the global community and individual nations.

In Mathematics, students gain mastery of Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Trigonometry. Students who wish to continue their mathematics education after completing their three year sequence may select Pre-Calculus as a stepping stone to more advanced classes in Calculus.

Students acquire a basic knowledge and deeper un-derstanding of biological processes and principles, and

an appreciation of life cycles and ecol-ogy, human physiology, and concepts in genetics and genetic research as they study Biology. They advance to the Physi-cal Sciences and investigate: matter and energy, bonding, atomic structure, the periodic table, kinetics and equilibrium, acids and bases, reduction oxidation and electrochemistry and mathematics of chemistry. Seniors tackle the syllabus for physics that emphasizes problem-solving

techniques, with concentration on math skills as they study the standard units on static, kinematics, dynamics, optics, electricity and magnetism.

The general studies curriculum would not be complete without Foreign Language instruction in Spanish. This two-year course of study is offered beginning in 11th grade.

•If you are looking for a serious Mesivta with a proven track record successfully educating Talmidimas serious Bnei Torah with dis-tinction, then you should contact the Yeshiva of New Haven. You will be confident that you are choosing for your son the best learning experience for these most important formative years of his Chinuch.
