H. COUNCILL TRENHOLM PAPERS Collection 179-1 to 179-78 Prepared by: Helen Rutt May 1996

Scope Note

The papers of H. Councill Trenholm (1900-1963), college

president and educational official, span the period from 1882 to

1964, and measure thirty-four linear feet. H. Councill Trenholm

headed Alabama State College1 for thirty-seven years. The

collection focuses on his role at Alabama State and his

involvement in numerous educational organizations. In the early 1920s, while his father, George W. Trenholm,

served as President of the State Normal School at Montgomery,

Alabama, H. Councill directed the school's extension service.

After the 1925 death of his father, H. Councill became President,

a position he held until 1962. George Trenholm's careers as a

high school principal, organizer of county teacher-training

institutes, and President of the State Normal School are well-

documented in the Family Papers Series. H. Councill's career at

Alabama State is documented throughout the collection, in

programs, diaries, clippings, and other printed material.

Official records of Alabama State University are not included in

1 The institution known today as Alabama State University, entered the twentieth century as The State Normal School. During H. Councill's tenure, it became State Teachers College, Alabama State College for Negroes, and Alabama State College. For the sake of consistency, it is hereafter referred to as "Alabama State."

this collection. In addition to his work at Alabama State, H. Councill

Trenholm became actively involved in state and national

educational organizations. For most of his professional life, he

held elected office with the Alabama State Teachers Association

(A.S.T.A.), the National Association of Teachers in Colored

Schools (N.A.T.C.S.) and its successor, the American Teachers'

Association (A.T.A.). He also served as longtime editor of these

organizations' publications. Correspondence, writings, programs,

and printed material document Trenholm's contributions. This

collection also chronicles the history of these organizations

through conference materials, membership lists, publications, and

files concerning the Joint Committee of the A.T.A. and the

National Education Association.

H. Councill Trenholm played a role in numerous other

organizations. The organizational files include materials

relating to a wide variety of groups, including the American Red

Cross, Association for the Study of Negro Life and History,

Commission on Interracial Cooperation, Prince Hall Masons, State

Fair of Alabama, and the Y.M.C.A. It also documents the Elks

Oratorical Contests and H. Councill's role as a regional

director.

In 1963 and 1973 Portia L. Trenholm donated the collection

to Moorland-Spingarn.
