Brief History/ limitations

I have been instructed by Blackburn with Darwen Borough council to comment upon

Plot 1 Furthergate, 13 existing individual trees, 3 groups of trees and Plot 4

Furthergate, ?? existing trees, ?? groups of trees within the proposed development

site, to provide a plan of protection for the trees to be retained on a construction site

according to the guidance laid out in BS 5837 Trees in relation to construction –

Recommendations 2012. The report is required to validate a planning application.

Measurements have been taken from the trees closest to the area of proposed

development to form a cell that complies with the British Standard. Works to the trees

may be specified but this report by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council. No

works should be undertaken to any trees with TPO notices with out pre application

notice obtained by our arboricultural manager Russell Critchley.

The area contains a number of trees in an urban location and as the trees have formed

a natural association each individual tree is not debated in depth on an individual

basis. The purpose of this report is only to examine in detail the effect of a proposed

future development of the land on the existing vegetation during construction of the

proposed development.

The tree survey was conducted from the ground level only. Any defects in the high

crown or covering vegetation in the trees have been detected to the best of our

abilities.

Introduction

The information produced in the ‘BS 5837 Tree Survey’ by our qualified Arborists

shows the tree locations on the map layout and the root protection zones in relation to

BS 5837 2012 Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction

Recommendations. The root protection zone should clearly demonstrates how the

proposed development can be undertaken with minimal damage to the trees to be

retained, both above and below ground level. Regarding fencing round the trees intent

on retaining fig 1 picture an example of a protective barrier reducing compaction to

the roots in the demolition and or construction stage of the development.

Definitions on individual tree survey

Retention category

The retention category will be documented in a table or spread sheet outlining the

trees that are worth keeping in categories A, B, C and trees under category U meaning

un-retainable. Refer to fig 2 for retention category and the meanings. Understanding

the tree quality around development will make decisions around the trees.

fig 2. Retention category

Tree number, In each table or spread sheet in the survey we include the tree number referred in the survey map,

Tree species, commonly understood English names of the tree species or

the genus of the Latin name used.

Trees height, measure with the use of trigonometry.

Trunk diameter at 1.5 meters, measured as one or multiple stems, at or close to 1.5 meters.

The crown spread of the trees, longest measurement of the crown from

the tree trunk is taken.

The crown clearance from the floor, shortest distance from the branches to the floor is taken in individual or groups of trees.

Age class, estimated from young, young mature, Mature or over mature.

Physical condition, describes the vigour or growth as good, average or poor.

Structural condition, describes the tree structures from roots, trunk and branches as good, average or poor.

Management recommendations, this is any recommendation to improve

the physical or structural health of the tree.

Remaining contribution of the trees life. This is a guide to the length useful contribution of the trees life. Remaining linkes in with the retention category in BS: 5837, 2012.

Retention category, refer to fig 2. This a guide to the value of the trees in the

survey, relating to BS:5837, 2012.

This data is for giving a clear picture if what you have, what you want and the best way to plan development round the existing trees on site for the best way to preserve the trees root to crow.
