Canal Bank Improvements Planned for the Grand Canal in Pierson Place Neighborhood
by Kerry Wilcoxon, City of Phoenix
The City of Phoenix recently received approval for $4.9 million in funding to construct a multi-use trail along the Grand Canal including the north bank of the canal between 7th and Central Avenues in the Pierson Place Neighborhood. The project will include a 10-foot-wide multi-use path, dusk-to-dawn pedestrian lighting, neighborhood links to local streets and signalized trail crossings at 7th Avenue and Central Avenue. There is also funding for public art throughout the project.
The Pierson Place Neighborhood Trail is part of the first phase
of the larger Grand Canalscape Project which will eventually
result in a contiguous trail along the Grand Canal between
Central Phoenix and Tempe. The project is an off-shoot of the
recently completed ReinventPHX community outreach effort.
The overall goal of the Grand Canalscape Project is two-fold.
The primary intent is to develop a safe route for bicycle and
pedestrian traffic along the Grand Canal bank that includes
crossings facilities at the major streets. The secondary intent
is to re-integrate the canals into the surrounding communities
by incorporating public art, minimal landscaping and
neighborhood access points to the pathway to provide better
visibility, access and ultimately appreciation of the canal
system in Phoenix.
In addition to the Pierson Place trail, phase one of the project will include construction of a multi-use commuter trail along the north bank of the canal between 15th Avenue and 16th Street in the Phoenix Uptown Region and a neighborhood trail along the south bank between Garfield and Van Buren Streets in the Gateway North Region.
Funding includes $4.2 million of the City of Phoenix Municipal Aesthetics Program funds provided by Salt River Project which operates the canal and $700,000 provided by the City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department and Arts Commission.
The city is currently developing request for proposals (RFP)
for both the trail design and the art components of the
project. Design will begin in early 2015 with construction
set to begin in 2016. Due to constraints on the funding,
project construction must be completed by mid-September
2016. For more information on the project, please contact
City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department engineer
Kerry Wilcoxon at 602-262-4613 or
NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS This letter was sent to the board by a PPHD resident:
I would like to thank Steven Sullivan for his great act of kindness. On August 6th I arrived home and to my surprise I found that Steven had almost finished reconstructing the rail fence in my front yard. Steven, who doesn't live in Phoenix, was visiting his father (Bill Sullivan) who lives across the street. I have been wanting to replace the fence for some time. I offered to pay him for it, and he said that wasn't an option. So THANK YOU STEVEN... it looks great and what a surprise!!! After over 50 years in the neighbor-hood, this is what makes it special and why I love it so much. Mrs. Martin, Highland
Thank you to both Steven for being such a great neighbor, and to Mrs. Martin for the recognition.
If you have a great neighborhood story please let us
know so we can share it in an upcoming newsletter.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Charles Jones
What big thing is coming to a border of Pierson Place?
What big event will be happening in Pierson Place?
What great things will be distributed in Pierson Place?
What next step is in the identity of Pierson Place?
Or, how about the fun way we play Santa Claus every
year? Gotcha curious yet? Two things come to mind,
these are all about the people in Pierson Place, and
relishing neighborhood improvements every day.
The big thing coming is Canalscape! This project will
add concrete paths, lighting and shade on the canal
bank. It will be installed on the north canal bank from
15th Avenue to 16th Street, which includes the southern
border of Pierson Place. It also calls for improvements
at our 3rd Ave entrance to the canal, to be built in
conjunction with the existing bridge to the Carnation
neighborhood. This is a great recreational amenity
coming to our neighborhood, and we look forward to
more enjoyable and safer usage of the canal bank.
The big event is our GAIN event, which is a pet themed
bar-b-que in the middle of Elm St! (No, we are not
bbq’ing pets!) Our own traveling bbq chef Roland
Regeon (Hazelwood) will cook up a free lunch on his
mobile grill (it’s bigger than a Volkswagen). We'll
have pet vendors to provide care tips, demonstrations,
coupons, etc., and crime prevention information and
security devices to be given away. Mingle with elected
officials and the Police Chief, and our Community
Action Officer is bringing a K-9 unit! Be sure to bring
your kids, pets and lawn chairs, and join us for some
great food and friendship on Oct 18th. See the back
page of this newsletter for details.
The great things to be distributed are dead-bolt door
locks and new address numbers painted on curbs and
alley fences! Purchased with a Block Watch grant, you
can pick up new dead-bolts at the GAIN event, and we
plan to have the address numbers completed this fall.
Many, many thanks to the Police Department and City of
Phoenix for providing the Block Watch program.
The next step in the Pierson Place identity is a new logo!
It was developed by our own Chris Marks (Elm St), a
graphic designer, dedicated board member and our
Traffic Chair. Many, many thanks to Chris for working
so hard to come up with a design that represents Pierson
Place so well, in addition to many other great things he
has done for the neighborhood. We plan to add the new
logo to everything this fall, and we urge you to come see
it on a big banner at the GAIN event.
And speaking of Santa Claus, wouldn’t you just love to
see Pierson Place up in lights on Central Avenue? Well,
this year you can! We are sponsoring holiday decorations
on Central Avenue this year, so be sure to look for a
banner with our new logo in the Pierson Street area.
Helping the city look well during the holidays is a small
way that YOUR neighborhood likes to pay it forward.
No doubt we are done with the summer slowdown, and
there are lots of things in play right now. A big amenity,
a big event, big distributions, a bigger identity and a little
holiday spirit to look forward to. What a great mix of
things to move the neighborhood forward. What great
people who appreciate neighborhood improvements.
What a great neighborhood.

Modern Living in a Historic Neighborhood By Evan Boxwell (boxwellsouth.com) In 2010 the City of Phoenix sent out an RFP (request for proposal) for the redevelopment of several parcels in the Pierson Place Neighborhood. One parcel was a vacant lot, 514 W Mariposa. The deal was that the city would sell me the land at a discounted price if I developed and we lived in the home for 3 years. That’s what we planned to do, cash out after the three years and move on. However, after living here for some time, we realized that we really liked the neighborhood. There were restaurants and amenities opening their doors within walking distance, the light rail is only a few steps away, and the neighbors on the street couldn’t be nicer. We loved the neighborhood so much, why wouldn’t other people? Shortly after completion of our house, I noticed some more opportunities in the area and began buying more vacant land on the street. To date, I’ve completed a few homes on the street and I’m in the planning phase of a 10-unit single family attached project located across the street from 180 Automotive. The units will range from 1700-2000 sf and each one will be complete with its own private roof terrace. Staying true to my style, they will have a contemporary look and be energy efficient. The modern look of my homes adds more character to the neighborhood without taking away from the charm. I hope that I can continue to receive the support from the neighborhood, and as always would love to hear suggestions from my neighbors on how we can improve.

5 CASA ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT
Recently Charley Jones was elected President of Community Alliance of Seventh Avenue (CASA). CASA is a non-profit subsidiary of the Seventh Avenue Merchants Association in partnership with the bordering historic neighborhoods. It is tasked with creating beautification and improvement projects in and around 7th Ave from Camelback to Indian School. CASA depends on participation from the four historic neighborhoods adjacent to this section of 7th Ave, and as President of Pierson Place Historic District, we know Charley will lead CASA to great accomplishments. Congratulations Charley! Charley volunteers 25% of his business time working with the City to improve Pierson Place and the surrounding area. He is Chairman of the Alhambra Village Planning Committee, member of Mayor Stanton's Neighborhood Advisory Committee, President of Community Alliance of Seventh Avenue, member of the Infill Development Advisory Board, member of the Uptown TOD Steering Committee, and President of Pierson Place Historic District. He works continuously to add improvements and enhancements in Pierson Place, and to keep crime rates at some of the lowest levels in the City.
FLORENCE CRITTENTON The mission of Florence Crittenton “to give every girl whose life we touch safety, hope and opportunity” is as important today as it was in 1896 when the agency was founded. APS Holiday Parade This year’s APS Electric Light Parade will be held on December 6th. One of the signature holiday events in Phoenix for over 25 years, the parade begins on Central Avenue at Montebello, heads south on Camelback Road, where it turns east to 7th Street where it turns south and ends at Indian School Road. Parade lovers are invited to come out to view the official parade judging at the main staging area at North Phoenix Baptist Church. There are also many children’s activities including visits with Santa.
