Sophia Loren. Elizabeth Taylor. Ursula Andress. Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. Christina Onassis. Diego Maradona. They all stayed at Schweizerhof, a 150-year-old hotel in Bern, Switzer-land.

Okay. We’ll let you in our little secret and tell you why they preferred to stay there in this edition’s Luxury Retreat.

As top international fashion guru, Rosemin Manji gets to go places A LOT. But, she says she “finds it hard to relax and unwind.” Check her Travel Bag to know why. This edition’s Melting Pot and Festive Getaways is something more than your chip-off-the-ol’-block read, listing down everything hap-pening under the sun this holiday season worth your morning cup.

From a “Christmas in the Bermuda” package to a Zighy Bay experi-ence, Milan shopping galore, Goa love affair, Hamburg countdown and surprises from the Dead Sea, Festive Getaways dies the cast.

Melting Pot’s A-Z of hotel dining promotions is a must-read; no

kidding—I mean, hey, not that I’m the editor, but seriously, you should take a look. Melting Pot is two hours of putting together 50 emails from different hotels about what they have for Christmas and New Year, and making sure things don’t get mixed up.

Julian Redman talks about his recent trip to Germany, and Gill Shep-herd tells her Fiji adventures with her family.

Read on.

Silver spoonDear editor.

You’re right. Not all apartment hotels are born equal, some have more class, giving you that five-star feel while staying in a three-star accommodation.

My family and I always stay in an apartment hotel whenever I travel. Being an engineer working at a big corporation, I am always sent to places where I would need to stay for long periods thereby necessitating that I bring along my family with me or they be able to visit me from time to time.

Of course, my company is generous enough to provide me with apartment hotel accommodations that has every-thing a five-star hotel has, but for the fruit basket. But who needs that?Angelo FuentavillaMuscat, Oman

Dear Mr. Fuentavilla,You’ll never run short of such accommoda-tions here in Dubai.Cheers.Editor

Vanity knows no inconvenience, as the cliché goes.

And that goes for Arabian norms on clothing where

wearing garments covering the entire body but for the face—sometimes, just the eyes as for some women—was, for a long, long time, meant to adhere to a religious calling.

Through time, however, this has evolved into a fashion in its own right, becoming cunningly chic while remain-ing in line with the traditional dress code. Fashion made it possible to end common stereotypes about the people of Arabia; in the same vein, it helped create the Arabian identity.

HijabWhat, then, are the traditional Ara-

bian clothing that have made their way on the catwalk?

The hijab, a head covering tradition-ally worn by Muslim women, is one. The Arabic word literally means curtain or cover. Hijab has been given the wider meaning of modesty, privacy, and moral-ity . Another definition is metaphysical, where al-hijab refers to “the veil which

separates man or the world from God.”The wearing of Hijab has caused con-

troversy lately. Some countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia requires women to wear it when in public; other countries like France and Turkey ban it in schools; in the U.S., Muslim women are left to decide on their own whether to wear it all.

AbayaAbayas are known by various names

but serve the same purpose, which is to cover. Contemporary models are usually caftans, cut from light, flowing fabrics like crepe, georgette, and chiffon. Styles differ from region to region: some abayas have embroidery on black material while others are brightly coloured and have dif-ferent forms of artwork across them.

There has lately been several labels coming up promoting the Arabian wear. Among them is Abaya Couture which was founded in 2009 by Badr Al Budoor, actually a pseudonym of the Emirati designer who has recently embarked on the fashion world with this label. Having spent years living in the UK, Italy and Spain, she has broadened her skills in all genres of art dear to her. She has been

noted for her unique style described as minimalist, eccentric and elegant. Design inspirations comes from mystical Arabia and European vogue combined. Abaya Couture has made abaya a fashion statement, offering edgy and progres-sive Emirati couture creations to women everywhere.

Kaftan A kaftan, meanwhile is a man’s coat

usually reaching to the ankles with long sleeves, and which buttons down the front. It can be made of wool, cashmere, silk, or cotton. It is often worn with a sash.

The kaftans worn by the Otto-man sultans constitute one of the most splendid collections of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. Some of them were so precious that they were given as rewards to impor-tant dignitaries and victorious generals during elaborate religious festivals.

By the nineteenth century, kaftans were often embroidered on the front and on the sleeves. Like so many garments during Ottoman rule, there was a strict hierarchical order in the colours, pat-terns, ribbons and buttons, which were

chosen according to the rank of the person to whom they were presented.

From the 14th century through 17th centuries large patterns were used. The decorative patterns on the fabrics became both smaller and brighter in the late 16th and in the 17th centuries. By the second half of the 17th century, the most precious fabrics were those with ‘yollu’: vertical stripes with various embroider-ies and small patterns, the so-called “Selimiye” fabrics.

Most fabrics manufactured in Tur-key were made in Istanbul and Bursa, but some textiles came from as far as Venice, Genoa, Persia, India and even China. Each had very specific characteristics and was named accordingly.

The Topkapı Museum in Istanbul, possesses a large collection of Ottoman kaftans and textiles.

Fashion designer Tom Ford designed velvet Kaftans for the fashion house Gu-cci in the 1990s, which was referred to as “hippie chic” by those in fashion circles.

Thawb And then there’s the thawb, also

called dishdasha, kandura or suriyah, which is an ankle-length garment, usu-ally with long sleeves, similar to a robe.

The word thawb is the standard Arabic word for “a garment.” It is the traditional Arab dress for men. It is sometimes spelled thobe or thaub. It is a tunic, generally long. The word is used specifically for this garment in Arab states of the Persian Gulf. There has been some debate regarding the correct length of the thawb. Shorter length represents modesty, while longer represents royalty, status and wealth.

“Let your Feline Femininity out”www.polkadotcat.com

Page 18: Travel Arabia Monthly-Dec 2011

16

The thawb, which is commonly worn by men in the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq and other Muslim countries, is normally made of cotton, but heavier materials such as sheep’s wool can also be used, especially in colder seasons.

The style of the thawb varies slightly among the various regions within the Persian Gulf. The sleeves and the collar can be stiffened to give a more formal appearance. Other names may be used for this garment. In the UAE, the word kandura is used. In Morocco, the sleeves tend to be much shorter so that the thawb may seem more like a long T-shirt and is locally called gandora. Also the neck tends to be more open than in its Saudi counterpart and is often embroi-dered as is the breast pocket. Also it might lack buttons altogether.

The term thawb is also used to refer to similar women’s garments. The tradi-tional Palestinian woman’s long tunic is called thawb. Another example is a very long, over-sized woman’s garment with a heavily embroidered front panel and billowing back, also known as a Khaleeji dress, which is most commonly seen in the West worn for performance of the Saudi women’s social-style dances, in which manipulation of the large thawb is a key component.

Festivals

Awafi FestivalCelebrating Ras Al Khaimah’s heritage

This year’s event will attempt to put RAK on Guinness World Records. The Awafi spring festival celebrates

Ras Al Khaimah’s ethnic and cultural heri-tage through theatre performances, cultur-al displays, and outdoor sports events held amongst the dramatic red sand dunes of the emirate’s Awafi area.

This year’s 9th Awafi Festival will kick off on December 16, 2011 and promises to be even more exciting than previous ones as the Higher Organizing Committee of the festival has revealed it was organizing an elaborate opening ceremony to be held at the Awafi Stadium. The event will run till Jan. 5, 2012.

The opening-day activities will also include the inauguration of the new heritage village, and the unveiling of the world’s largest gathering of Toyota cars, a world-record attempt which is one of the main activities of the festival this year. A representative from the Guinness

World Records will be present to witness the event. The current record is 223 cars, which was established in the UK. In the event that a new world record is set, the Guinness World Records representative will officially announce the feat during the opening ceremony.

The ceremony, which is planned to take 45 minutes, will be highlighted by the screening of a documentary about the emirate. The documentary has been produced by a Dubai-based company under the supervision of the HOC. The ceremony, which will feature a special fireworks display, will also felicitate the Festival’s “guests of honor.”

This year’s Awafi Festival features a number of crowd-drawing sporting championships that will gather differ-ent teams representing UAE companies, institutions and communities. There will

be a football tournament to be held at the Awafi Stadium, a Jiu Jitsu championship in the closed hall of the UAE Club in Saih Albrairat, Ras Al Khaimah, an “arm wres-tling” championship, and a “bench press” championship.

The Festival will also host a tug-of-war championship.

The Awafi Festival is considered a pioneering and authentic Emirati annual event in and is one of the defining local tourist attractions in the RAK’s tourism calendar. It attracts visitors from all over the GCC during the 3 weeks of the event.

The festival has a Heritage Village, local arts and crafts, a bazaar, children’s play zone, clinics, and police aid post apart from public amenities like food outlets, coffee shops, and games area. The festival is free and doors open each day at 4:00 pm till late in the night.

Pompous pageantry. For what else could be a fitting tribute to these docile beasts of burden, the “ships of the desert,” which has carried man through the most inhospitable of lands since the yonder days of the pharaohs?

Camels once again take centerstage as the fifth session of the Dhafra Festival unfolds, Dec. 17 to 28, 2011, in Al Gharbia (the Western Region) in Abu Dhabi Emir-ate, an event which involves several heri-tage activities, at the forefront of which are the camel beauty contest, the Al-Hallab (milky camel) contest, and the camel race.

Once the main means of transport in the simmering Arabian desert, the camel remains an important cultural icon and a source of pride for Gulf Arabs. The Dhafra Festival beauty contest has been increased to over 50 (the registration ends Dec. 12 for all rounds). A total of AED 2 million in prize money will go to winners.

There will be also a Mahalib (milky) competition which includes a round for Asayel and another for Mahajim. The reg-istration is open until Dec. 10 and the race date will be held Dec. 13-15 just before the start of the Festival. The competition seeks to choose the milkiest camel. It also aims to draw attention to this aspect and encourage camel owners to acquire the

milky camels as camel milk is considered as one of the camel’s most important food products, which has many health benefits.

The camel race will be held on Dec. 23. It consists of three rounds for Emiratis

and another three for citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) aged over 18 years old. The contestants must be physically fit and wear protection gear and a helmet.

The registration to the race is available between Dec. 17 and 23. The distance of the race is as follows: 3000 metres for 18-35 years old participants, 2000 metres for 36-49 and 1200 metres for 50-70.

Judges look for shiny hair, a long neck and a large and symmetrical hump in the camel beauty contest.

Camel beauty pageants were initiated 20 years ago, as cultivators began mixing

species to breed faster camels for racing. A falconry contest, saluki competition

(the Arab greyhound), a date packaging contest, the Nabati poetry contest, a pho-tography contest, and a cooking contest will likewise be held.

Organizers led by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage said these contests were provided in addition to multiple heritage events dedicated to children and school students. There will be a market for traditional Emirati industries which will include 160 specialist shops for female Emirati citizens.

Falconry contests with falcons bred in captivity will be held for the first time. The competition consists of two rounds: the first round for the Gyr Saker category, and the second for the Gyr Shaheen.

The Festival will also feature the unique saluki races which consist of five qualifying rounds. The first three salukis will be chosen from each round in order to take part in the official challenge round (15 qualifiers) while the fourth, fifth and sixth salukis of every round will be taking part in the secondary challenge round (15 racers).

Dhafra FestivalHail to the camel!

A total of AED 2 million in prize money will go to winners of the beauty contest.

Inside Arabia

UAE turns 40Celebrations go full swing

‘Our experience…is clear proof that unity and cooperation are the source of power glory and pride.’ – His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, first president of the UAE, a post he held for over 30 years (1971–2004).

You’re in the best of luck to be in the UAE this time of the year as the people celebrate the country’s 40th anniversary though 40 days of festivities highlighted by merrymaking in almost every street corner.

Celebrations started on Dec. 2, 2011 as streets and buildings across the country turned bright and decorated to celebrate UAE’s birth.

The National Day, as it is called, is celebrated on December 2 to mark the UAE’s formal independence from the United Kingdom and the eventual unifica-tion of the seven emirates in 1971 which combined to form the modern-day coun-try. People celebrate this day with flags and drawings on their faces, cars, streets, houses, clothes, even buildings.

Among celebrations is a series of elaborate illuminations and light shows

that brightened up two landmarks of national identity - Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the historic Al Jahil Fort - in Abu Dhabi.

For the past four decades, Emiratis and expatriates alike have celebrated National Day with much pride and energy. The UAE’s 40th National Day celebrations are being planned as a 40-day programme recognising all aspects of the nation’s life and heritage. A great diversity of projects and events have been prepared at the federal, emirate and local level.

The programme sets out to involve the nearly five million people living in the UAE in spectacular events, community based activities and projects that satisfy long-term educational goals, as well as providing bricks and mortar projects that will leave lasting and worthwhile memo-rials. The key objective is to collectively

26 I Travel Arabia

Page 29: Travel Arabia Monthly-Dec 2011

celebrate this important milestone for the nation and all the people that call the UAE home.

The UAE is now a nation made up of faces from different places, bringing with them important skills, culture and person-alities from every corner of the globe. Living side by side together, under one spirit, working to help the nation continue to prosper and grow.

The UAE was formerly the Trucial States or Trucial Coast. In 1820, the Brit-ish established presence in the region with the signing of several agreements includ-ing a maritime truce which gave the area its name.

Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who at the time was ruler of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Mak-toum, at the time, ruler of Dubai, took the initiative to form a federation among the emirates.

Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan became first president of the UAE, a post which he held for over 30 years (1971–2004).

The seven emirates are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al-Quwain and Ajman.

Luxury retreat

SchweizerhofPlayground of the rich and famous

At the center of Europe is a 150-year-old, 99-room classic hotel, a favorite party playground of the rich and famous, who also love to have the place for private moments.

Schweizerhof in Bern, capital of Switzerland, was founded in1857. Marble pillars in the ballroom, fine plasterwork on the ceilings, antiques including chests of drawers, pictures and mirrors bear wit-ness to the hotel’s glorious past.

Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Ursula Andress, former German Chan-cellor Helmut Schmidt ,shipping heiress Christina Onassis, football genius Diego Maradona and skiing superstar Alberto Tomba…the list of icons that have de-scended upon Schweizerhof goes on.

“A good thing about our hotel,” says Michael Thomann, general manager, “is that it is very small. And what we can do is have a very personal touch.”

“If we have 200 or 300 rooms,” he says, “we can not do such personalized treatment like what we are doing and that’s the outstanding thing about our hotel.”

Outstanding indeed. The Schweiz-erhof, Bern’s first luxury hotel, became even more notable in 1988 when the world learned from the media that Adnan Khashoggi, who was being held in a nearby prison, was having gourmet meals delivered to his cell from the Schweizer-hof – on porcelain plates naturally. Just a short time previously, the most famous

billionaire in the world at that time had had to exchange his suite at the Schweiz-erhof for a prison cell.

The rooms, with its wireless internet access and guest media hub, are state-of-the-art, as well as the ballroom and other facilities. This altogether provide the five-star superior hotel an ambience that is a deliberate fusion of cutting-edge design with elements—an exotic mix of the past, present and the future, actually.

Schweizerhof is an Arab-friendly ho-tel. It has an Arab-speaking guest relations staff who also knows a lot about prepar-ing Arabic meals being the food and beverage manager himself; a prayer room, a shisha corner in the smoking lounge, and a satellite dish that access Dubai and

28 I Travel Arabia

Page 31: Travel Arabia Monthly-Dec 2011

29

other Arabic TV channels, according to Thomann.

More importantly, says Thomann, is that Bern, with its population of just 130,000, is a safe, laid-back city.

“Life is very great. You come to Bern, you calm down, you can relax. Bern is not so money-driven. Everything is a little bit slower. A lot of people come to Bern just to relax. It is extremely perfect for family holidays,” he says.

Bern has no streets in the middle of the town; only walking paths. “There is normally no cars,” Thomann says.

Bern is situated in the heart of Swit-zerland. The capital city can be reached easily by car or by plane via the Bern-Belp Airport and bus connections to the city center. Those who prefer to travel by rail will benefit from a dense network of trains ensuring direct connections to ma-jor European cities. Bern’s central location makes it the ideal hub for trips through-out all of Switzerland.

Bern’s unique cityscape – distin-guished by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1983 – is shaped by the city’s cos-mopolitan charm. Examples of medieval architecture stand alongside symbols of world-class construction and design.

With 6 km / 4 miles of arcades, Bern has one of Europe’s longest covered shop-ping promenades. Bern has everything you’re looking for – be it stylish bou-tiques, exquisite jewelry shops, traditional markets, simple second-hand shops or shopping malls of any size.

Thomann says it would be good to book two or three weeks in advance to ensure necessary arrangements including room accommodations are done satis-factorily. He says June and July are best months for Gulf travelers to visit Bern.

“The temperature is normally 25 degrees Celsius; and not a lot of rain. It’s a perfect climate,” he says, adding that December is also the city’s high season for visitors.

To Schweizerhof can be arranged, says Mi-chael Thomann, general manager. “But we have to know it in advance, like two weeks prior, that would be perfect.”He says that from Dubai, the plane can land at Bern’s airport, which is about 20 minutes away from the hotel.Thomann says helicopter transfer and lim-ousine rides are also not a problem.

30 Maybe because I was born here, but it seems that Ger-many holds a place in my heart, which I must share

with you in this article.Berlin, Stuttgart, Cologne and Dort-

mund along with some of the countryside in between provided me with many days of enjoyment in this sociable, safe and environmentally conscious nation.

Before even landing in Berlin, one could not help but notice the huge amount of wind farms peppered across the rural landscape as our plane circled

over the villages outside the city, the growing number of Toyota Prius being utilized in place of Mercedes-Benz within the taxi fleet, and the Toyota Hybrids plugged in around the city for the more environmentally conscious driver. Indeed, you can see that the Germans are taking a positive step reducing their carbon footprint.

Aside from a proactive approach to the environment, it seems Germany has a lot to offer for travellers seeking a vibrant, sociable and engaging trip away from the Middle East.

Stuttgart was for me a trip to Mercedes-Benz, a company I have worked with for over five years. If you’re an automotive fan, then this is the place to go to—the museum for the forefathers of the automobile is a real treat, a clearly brand-led account of the history of the automobile. The museum provides a wonderful display of cars dating back 125 years—no other car company can claim this. And with the city centre streets full of restaurants and bars, it is certainly a worthy stopover for a couple of nights as you tour the country. Furthermore,

It also has an un-serious side to it which sees a sense of humour and an engaging social element which the Germans often don’t get as much credit for as they deserve. —Julian Redman

Stuttgart is home to Ferdinand Porsche who has also recently opened a museum for their brand, which by itself, has an impressive lineup of their automotive history. If you are a car-lover, Stuttgart is a must to reminisce and dream about some amazing classic and modern day machines.

Cologne, on the other hand, is a historic wonder; its centrepiece is one of the most magnificent cathedrals you could ever visit. Its gargoyles will keep you amused for hours as everytime you stop and view the enormous statuesque exterior walls of the building, you’ll see new and often scary faces peering down at you. This is something from Hogwarts or the horror movies of old! Moreover, the old streets with its welcome restau-rants and bars will have you sat alongside a typically smiling German who will happily talk to you in his best English for hours. I have felt nothing other than safe and welcome in this country during all my visits here. Cologne will give you a “small town” feeling on the riverside ad-joined to Bonn’s and Dusseldorf ’s more

urban offering, and is an absolute must if you’re in the western region of Germany.

My most recent visit to Germany was last month for business. But of course, with six nights, there was plenty of time to view the scenery post-conference. And Berlin did not fail to disappoint (even-tually). I was staying in an area which seemed to be “convenient” but not all that sociable as there were no shops or restaurants immediately in my vicinity. Excited as I was about a “river” near the hotel, I soon found out that it actually was an industrial canal. So my visions of an evening stroll along the water was soon put to bed.

Berlin however has a lot to of-fer, which primarily focused on more modern day history centered around the troubles of the Berlin Wall and Check Point Charlie, which was the gate between communism and “freedom” and for which so many died trying to seek. I visited “Berliner Unterwelten”, the Berlin Underground which was a fascinating underground system of nuclear fallout shelters for what they called the safety of

those “upstairs” (above ground), but was indeed only useful for barely two percent of the population (which, of course, no one knew at that time!). It was a maze of tunnels and secret doors and air-locked passage ways which interconnected vast areas of the east side of Berlin. Now with Cold War over, these are thankfully only tours for those visiting the city.

The Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie provided a profound insight into

modern day history, a reflection on how grateful the Euro-zone is for its progres-sive union over the recent decades. It was only 22 years ago when this repressive barrier came down. Tales of tragedy was aplenty even just weeks before the wall collapsed. The Berlin Wall was a thousand kilometers long, and many parts of it still remain a reminder about those who died for the struggle for freedom.

That said, we move on to Berlin’s, particularly East Berlin’s cultural front where a visit to Alexander Platz, home of the famous TV Tower (or “Berliner Fernsehturm”) is a must. The place is a photo-stop for anyone. You can also stroll

around the stalls, which sell the famous heart-shaped ginger biscuits. There is also a central stage with live band music and Steiners of the local drink. Here, even if you prefer a lemonade like my colleague did, you can certainly enjoy the vibrancy of the location and soak up the atmo-sphere and culture of Germany.

Also, you should see the Branden-burg Tor (meaning Gate in German), the only remaining set of pillars by which one would enter Berlin at the turn of the previous century. It now is the start of the long straight boulevard called Unter den Linden, which is home of some of the world’s finest brands and, as well, a num-

ber of embassies and opera houses. But for most of those “West End/Broadway plays”you can go to the theatre district in and around Potsdamer Platz, a couple of stops from Brandenburg Tor Station.

In summary, Germany can provide you with a clinical experience synony-mous with the brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Bosch that come from this culture of perfection and prestige. It also has an un-serious side to it which sees a sense of humour and an engag-ing social element which the Germans often don’t get as much credit for as they deserve.

Guten Tag and happy travels!

Chronicles

FijiCrystal waters. White sand. Cloudless skies.

Located in the South Pacific, Fiji is a long way from anywhere. But being one of the two main airline hubs in the Pacific (the other

being Hawaii), Fiji is much easier to get to than you might think. Both standard return travel and Round-the World tickets, incorporating Fiji as a pre-arranged stop, are readily available.

But why go to Fiji? The Seychelles, or Maldives, are much closer to the UAE. We went because we wanted to be some place where the family could relax after a wonderful, but tiring, nine-week road

trip around North America, and years ago I read that Fiji was the clear winner in a survey of the favourite destinations of travel writers.

Of the 300 islands in the Fiji archi-pelago, our destination was the environ-mentally friendly and award-winning Castaway Island Resort, in the Mamanucas group, easily reached by boat, seaplane or helicopter from the international airport.

The resort, built in traditional Fijian style, occupies the flatter land at the south-ern point of the 174 acre private island. With its crystal clear waters, white sand,

cloudless blue skies and lush tropical veg-etation, it was everything we had imagined of a Pacific paradise. A guitar serenade and a hearty ‘BULA! Welcome to Castaway!’ greeted us as we stepped ashore.

Our accommodation was a beauti-fully furnished, air-conditioned, ocean view thatched bungalow known as a ‘Bure’ with three proper beds for the children, a separate master bedroom and en-suite bathroom, and even a tin foot bath outside to wash the sand off our feet.

Our package was all inclusive (with drinks extra) but the quality and choice

of food was superb, with extensive buffets and an excellent à la carte menu, plus deli-cious take-away pizzas. In the evenings, a special children’s buffet from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, enabled parents to feed then settle their children at the wonderful Kids Club, or with a nanny (available for hire by the hour/day/week) before returning after 7pm to relax and enjoy a very pleas-ant dinner for two.

There was a wide range of water activities available, many of them free of charge, including snorkelling, kayaking, sailing, diving, fishing, banana boat rides, island hopping and dolphin safaris. Un-derwater there were corals, star fish, rays, sea snakes and reef sharks to be seen.

On land, there was tennis, volleyball, beach rugby, hermit crabs to hunt for and wild goats, tropical birds and fruit bats to go in search of on the bush walk up to the

island’s rocky peak. And of course you could always just relax by the pool with a drink or pamper yourself with a massage.

Each day, there was a themed pro-gramme of activities, such as Marine En-vironment Day where guests could plant new coral to preserve the reefs. Wednesday was Fijian Culture Day: gathering and opening coconuts, weaving palm leaves, and eating a Fijian feast cooked in a sand-pit filled with hot stones called a ‘Lovo’.

But what made our stay really special was feeling part of one big, happy family, living together on this beautiful island. This was largely due to the Fijians, who were so warm and welcoming: genuinely contented with life and always greeted you with a beaming smile and a heartfelt ‘Bula’. But also because so many of the guests (over 40%) return to Castaway, year after year, and are on first name terms with

most of the staff. Some of them first vis-ited as children, then came with their own children, and now come with their grand-children. Why do they return? Because the legendary friendliness of the Fijians and especially their love of children, make Castaway the most idyllic, family holiday imaginable.

Okay, I’ll spare you the “Oh-the-place-is-great-I-want-to-get-back-there-again” routine. I’ll get to the point—the real point.

Following an almost two-hour ride from our Dubai Media City main office, I was thinking of just jumping into bed soon as I get there— Nour Arjaan by Rotana in Fujairah, I mean.

But nay. Something took my breath away the moment I stepped into my 17th floor accommodation for the weekend.

The one-bedroom suite that also has a living area with couches and a large wall TV (there’s another one just two meters from my bed on the other side of the wall), two bathrooms, a kitchenette and a dining table, has huge glass walls that gave magnificent views of the city.

Really magnificent. For a few seconds I played Nero looking over Rome. My Domus Aurea, the Nour Arjaan by Ro-tana. The place sits right in the middle of Fujairah’s relatively small city, which won’t burn for a long time, and which, on the contrary, is experiencing a boom with a multi-million-dirham City Centre and a number of other major hotels under construction.

Dinner with the general manager was inspiring. Mr. Ahmet Ender, Turkish-Ca-nadian who started his career in 1971 in a way like all GMs did—peeling potatoes or washing dishes—was unbelievable: During his stint in Manila, Philippines, he came across a popular dish called adobo, which is pork in vinegar, soya sauce and

garlic, and fell in love with it so much so that he came up with his variation that he would prepare for some occasions with his staff. More about this in the coming issue of Travel Arabia.

After dinner, I went looking around in my suite and tinkering with the gadgets—the TV remote for one; and the shower, of course—I could imagine just how Nour Arjaan by Rotana is perfect for a weekend holiday with the family, even a long stay. I could see kids playing by the sofa, turning the TV channels while the nanny prepares something in the kitchen and mom and dad watch TV, too. The suite has an adjoining bedroom, by the way, which connects from the living area—enough space for the kids at night.

Swimming pool was on the 20th floor, along with the state-of-the-art Bodylines

Fitness Centre and the kids corner. In fact, I saw kids with their dads playing in the pool when I went around the next day with Karishma Chopra, marketing and communication executive.

On the first floor was one of my favorite spots—the Murjan Café and Res-taurant, whose manager, Ram Dili always made it a point to say hello and made sure I had what I wanted. Food on the buffet was great. Murjan offers Mediterra-nean Nights on Mondays, Indian Mughal Nights on Thursdays and Friday Brunch.

Massage, too, was something I would always look back to. Sher, the therapist, gave me a 45-minute treat I will always remember. The guy, using oil, hit the spot and knew where to put extra pres-sure usually with his elbow. Indeed, the massage was so soothingly good that the room was filled with my yelps of joy. I loved it the most when he kneaded the back of my legs…oh dear, lying on my belly, my torso would bend up, my jaw dropping, and my eyes to the ceiling. I also got small goose bumps when his knuckles worked their way on my soles…mama mia.

On the third and last day, my mobile phone battery ran out. I called customer service and asked if they might have a charger that would fit my mob. A few minutes later, Edcel, room service, came to my door and handed one. I had the impression they turned the place upside down to find a charger for me.

The 28-storey Nour Arjaan by Rotana is five minutes away from the beach. It has 225 rooms and suites. Thinking of stay-ing over? Email [email protected] or call +971 (0)9 202 5555.

Now that, in a nutshell, is the point.

A hotel apartment serves two pur-poses: privacy and safety.

It is a transit accommodation that makes one feels perfectly at home. Also, more often than not, hotel apart-ments, have pretty much everything a hotel has—from room service to house cleaning, internet connection and a good shower to name a few.

Travel Arabia asked people staying in a hotel apartment why they chose so, and here’s what they say:

‘It’s safe’A registered boat captain who now

works for the United Arabia Shipping Co. as a fleet marine superintendent, Capt. Alaa Elzayat, who is also from Egypt, lives in a company-provided accommodation.

He says the company had offered him flats but he preferred to stay in a hotel apartment. “It’s safe,” Elzayat says.

“Sometimes I go out of the

country for two or three days. I come back and everything is there. It’s safe. There is security (unlike in the flats),” he further explains.

Another thing, he says, is that living in a hotel apartment, “you don’t have to make any effort cleaning the house.”

Internet connectivity is also an attrac-tion to staying at hotel apartments. “It’s very important as I need to conduct my business regularly,” he says.

Elzayat says his wife regularly flies in and stays with him for two months, returns to Egypt to check the kids and stay with them for a month, and comes back again.

Hotel apartments, he says, are “prefer-able for families because the place has everything and it’s safe.”

“Also, there is more privacy. It’s like a house, a second home.

Hotel apartments being dry is another plus factor, Elzayat says.

‘There is good service’Alaa El Sokary, who hails from Egypt,

says he travels a lot to Dubai on business trips. A former university professor of management, Sokary comes to the city

at least seven times a year as a resource person in management training activities.

“I like hotel apartments,” he says. “There is good environment, good service.”

Sokary says having a kitchen and a laundry machine is a plus. Moreover, he says, is that the place is clean. “Cleanli-ness is very important,” Sokary says.

‘It suits my criteria’Nader Santarisi, who has a doctorate

degree in engineering and is working for the Roads and Transportation Author-ity (RTA) says apartment hotels “suit my criteria.”

Hailing from Jordan, Dr. Santarisi has been staying in Dubai for the past three years.

“When I came here, I looked for a place to stay in that’s good and better provide some kind of services,” the doctor says, adding that he was also specifically looking for a place “that suits the heri-tage and culture of the area.”

“So I found that… hotel apartment suits these criteria for me. They provide the service that I’d like to have,” says Dr. Santarasi, also a former university engi-neering professor.

Internet connectivity, he says, is a must. “I need a place that can provide services like internet. I would like to make it easier on my self that is why I preferred to stay here.” The doctor’s family—wife and three kids—joined him later.

Général de Gaulle must be kicking up his grave, aching to get a piece of this!

For how could a man of destiny, ‘I’homme du destin,’ as Winston Churchill once called him, let this pass? The perfec-tionist bon vivant and master of grandeur certainly would love a feast.

Here’s to the great statesman who gave Napoleon a run for his money. A cozy place he would have loved to be—Bistro Madeleine.

Bistro Madeleine is a quintessential Parisian café on the Waterfront Prom-enade, beside the Dubai Creek. This quaint, nostalgic and sophisticated venue has a contemporary ambiance, and serves French delicacies to the accompaniment of old-school French jazz. Outdoor seating is available, and should be taken advantage

of, with Bistro Madeleine overlooking exceptional views of Festival Marina at InterContinental Dubai Festival City.

The restaurant takes its name from the shell shaped Madeleine cakes of 19th century France, which can be found as the signature pastry, and introduces diners to the traditional French theme throughout the restaurant. A variety of freshly baked breads are displayed in the center of the room, complimenting a menu of classical delights and hearty, home-made French a la carte meals. The restaurant also serves imported beverages at a stylish French bar.

The sweet and salted breakfast menu includes pastry favourites as well as cooked dishes such as ‘L’omelette jambon-fromage’ and ‘Les Oeufs Bénedictine’ (ham and cheese omelet or Eggs Benedict). A

swift business lunch is on offer with a choice of typical French dishes including salade nicoise, foie gras de canard and saumon fume. High tea is available in the afternoon, followed by intimate dinners with candle light, soft French music and a romantic setting missing only the River Seine.

The design of Bistro Madeleine emulates a casual Parisian dining scene. Imported, old-style wooden tables and chairs create an authentic French dining room atmosphere, heightened by further authentic touches such as posters adorn-ing the walls and a blackboard highlight-

ing “Le Menu De Jour”, with daily recom-mendations from the chef.

Bistro Madeleine allows diners to imagine themselves transported to the heart of Paris.

Bistro Madeleine has also introduced a piece of Parisian culture to the city with its authentic “French Nights: Soirée Souvenir de France.” Diners can now enjoy a chic night of music and entertainment whilst feasting on an authentic buffet of French fare, from cold cuts and live cooking sta-tions, to various cheeses and deliciously flavorsome desserts.

French Nights can be enjoyed every Thursday, 7pm – 11pm for just AED 145 including buffet and soft drinks and AED 185 with house red and white. For restau-rant reservations please call 04 701 1127 or email [email protected].

Miyako, the first Japanese restaurant in Dubai, located at Hyatt Regency Dubai & Galleria, is a must-visit place to explore the style of unique Japanese cooking. Miyako is Japanese for “capital” or “city centre.” The restaurant, since day one, has retained a well-deserved reputation of having the finest Japanese cuisine in Dubai.

Entering into the monasterial setting of the restaurant, one is immediately immersed in the warm color scheme of red and gold; the place offers a choice of seating—Teppanyaki tables, tatami room and a sushi and sashimi bar. Compliment-ing this is a combination of earthly mate-rials—wood and stone flooring—which make for a really cozy dining experience.

The semi-circular sushi and sashimi bar by the side of the restaurant gives one an exciting hint of what’s ahead for the evening.

The restaurant’s wide-ranging menu features mouth-watering dishes like Takowasabizuke, marinated octopus, a must-try. The appetizers offer soybean, small raw fish sushi and sashimi. There are spider rolls with soya sauce rolled in rice and covered with orange fish eggs to try if one is not brave enough to try raw fish. Mexican roll, prawn tempura is definitely a try. A nice selection of tuna and avocado salad, and fresh garden salad, make for a set of savory appetizers, which arrives with soya sauce to where you dip your sushi and enjoy the taste. The presentation looks very impressive. The sushi wrapped

delicately in the rice, and the prawn tem-pura was to its best taste and quality.

Seated on our teppanyaki table, the chef arrives and prepares our ordered combination. Starting with butter cooked fish hammour, followed by a fresh sautéed vegetable salad, with a choice of steamed rice or crab fried rice. The hammour had a very tingling taste, a balanced combina-tion of the butter and the real flavor of the fish. After a while, the chef served the well cooked beef steak, which has very strong flavors of soya sauce and was well done as per one’s request. It is very out-of-the-ordinary to watch the chef do his tricks of garnishing in front of you and cooking the exclusive Japanese food. In the drinks, order a fruit punch or watermelon skin and lemon squeezed juice to give a bit of sweetness to your taste buds

One can also enjoy the food in any of the Tatami rooms which is the real style of authentic Japanese dining, designed on a Tatami mat module and floor seating. Sur-rounded by paper walls, the whole experi-ence makes you feel like being in Japan, as many Japanese expats and families can be seen in the restaurant, too.

At the end of the whole Japanese cuisine experience, we feasted ourselves to the desserts: fried ice cream and green tea ice-cream. The fried ice cream is definitely the most delicious serving of the restau-rant. Dig into the vanilla ice cream hidden into the crispy crust. The hot and cold combination is amazing and was one of the must-haves of the restaurants.

Experience 2,000 years of Japanese cuisineMiyako

The restaurant’s wide-ranging menu features mouth-watering dishes like takowasabizuke, marinated octopus, a must-try.

Japanese cuisine developed over the past 2,000 years with strong influences from China and Korea. It is only in the last 300 to 400 years that all the influences have come together to form what nowadays can be called, Japanese cuisine. Japanese cuisine is also influenced by the four seasons and geography. Seafood and vegetables are most com-monly consumed. To some outsiders, Japanese cuisine may seem to taste bland; but that’s not quite accurate however because freshness, presenta-tion and balance of flavors are of prin-cipal significance, making the dining experience a truly memorable one.

Asian cuisine can be broken down into several regional styles that have roots in the peoples and cultures of those regions. One of the major types can be roughly defined as East Asian with its origins in Imperial China and now encompassing modern Japan and the Korean peninsula.

The styles of cuisine found in tra-ditional East Asian food evolved with a common usage of oils, fats and sauces in the preparation of dishes. And we got a sample of this—in a marathon sort of a way, so to speak.

It all started with an invite we received from Asiana Hotel which poked our interest to experience a flight of the orient and enjoy the delights of four luxuriously authentic restaurants that the hotel has. A custom-created, “race-against-time” speed lunch from 11:30am-1:30pm, actually. Very interesting, so our team went.

Asiana Hotel is the new five star hotel

in Deira. Upon entering the lobby, you will feel the serene atmosphere with the interiors that seemed to be drawn upon the influences of the ancient civilizations of the Far East – it’s very trendy, contem-porary and welcoming.

We were greeted by the Asiana market-ing, PR and F&B team at the lobby. The waitresses came in authentic Hanboks,

the traditional Korean wear, holding with them pots of tea that they offered us to, perhaps, prepare us for the much antici-pated speed lunch.

Our first stop was Sonamu, “pine” in Korean. Beef Bulgogi, Bibimbap, Japche and Pajeon were prepared by the Korean chefs. Japche was my instant favorite, it’s glass noodles with mixed noodles and seafood sautéed in sweet soy sauce.

The place is very cozy, where execu-tives and families can socialise and enjoy the finest foods. Guests can also sit down and hands-on enjoy the traditional Korean grill.

Next stop was Hanabi, the hotel’s Japanese restaurant. Interiors consist of an array of traditional Japanese artifacts including samurai swords on the ceiling. There were four tatami private rooms for guests who want to experience authentic seated dining, Japanese-style. Beef tataki,

sashimi and sushi were prepared in front of us with all the freshest ingredients.

Jade, the authentic Chinese restaurant was the next stop. It boasts all the bold flavours that the Chinese cuisine has be-come known for. Jade’s unique charming Oriental interior within a modern setting, incorporates Chinese history and culture thus creating an authentic rich ambience. We were served Wok Fried Diced Beef in Golden Bowl, Beijing Roasted Duck, Sweet and Sour Hammour, Shredded Boiled Chicken in Spicy Sauce, Tossed Squid and Vegetable Salad

Sea World Seafood Restaurant, the last stop was where we were able to choose from a wide selection of various fish and seafood, all of which were of the finest and freshest produce. The highly quali-fied chefs combined our selection with our choice of an array of spices, vegetables and/or rice and noodles for a truly memo-rable and delicious experience.

An array of sautéed Mussels with Chef ’s Special Sauce, Crispy Lobster with Hot Chili Sauce, Steamed Snow Fish Fillet with Soy Sauce, Beu-Roy were prepared by their Chinese chefs. I love the crispy lobster.

The culinary experience was really an out-of-this-world thing. The entire East Asian cuisine in two hours!

Shame if you could not try them. The restaurants are a highly-recommended must-try and visiting them should be on your to do list. For inquiries, call +971 4 2387777, www.asianahoteldubai.com

dining experience where Western-meets-Japanese and South East Asian-meets-European dishes. What we found instead was a place where the sanctity of each cuisine is distinctly maintained -- a great choice for big groups so that everyone can choose what they fancy.

With jazz music in the background and a low hum of conversation from nearby tables, we started with sushi -- a tough test for many restaurants and one that Teatro passed with flying colours. The Tempura Crispy Maki and Crunchy Shrimp Maki were fresh and crisp and served straight from the sushi bar that holds pride of place in the centre of the restaurant. With it, arrived a bowl of Japanese spicy beans.

Next up was another starter that we highly recommend: Scallops Crusted in 7 Spices. Ask the chef of the open showcase kitchen what the spices are and he winks at you mischievously. “It’s a secret,” he smiled. It was hard to prod as the tasty and soft scallops with a crispy top, cooked in a tangy sauce, vanished fast from the serving plate.

The interior of this signature restau-rant is warm and welcoming with hand blown glass, beaded crystal features and an array of Venetian masks. As jazz gave way to pipe music, we learned that there is a 50% discount on food for those who come in for dinner between 6-7.15pm. Else, set menus for groups of 12 and more also turn out to be economical and certainly worth the gastronomical delight in store.

Purists would gasp but we were glad to find a place where we could jump from Japanese delicacies straight into a Western style Grilled Chicken Breast and Angus Beef Tenderloin Fillets. Choose from the Grilled Black Angus NY Sirloin or the Grilled Veal Chop or take your pick from the Roasted Hammour or Teatro Seafood Platter or the Grilled Wagyu Fillet.

Do not miss the Nori Salmon. The fish cutlery helped as we dug in to the salmon, grilled to perfection (and they do ask you how you want your salmon cooked) and served with Wasabi potato.

For those in the mood for Asian noodles, the Pad Thai noodles are a good choice: the noodles were tender and all condiments were served separately. Some other Asian delights include the Peking Duck Spring Rolls, Butter Chicken, Chicken Achar Tikka, Singapore Chilli Prawns, Thai Basil Chicken and the Stir Fried Lobster Szechuan. Should you fancy Italian, there is a wide variety of pizzas, pasta and risotto to choose from.

But save some hunger for Teatro’s signature desserts without which your ex-perience will be incomplete. Skipping the Cheese cake and the Tiramisu for once, we decided to try the Vanilla Creme Brule and the Baked Hawaiian -- both excellent choices and an example of why Teatro ex-cels. While the Brule, with its caramelised top, melted in the mouth the fusion touch of strawberries and blueberry coulis with it was reason enough to go back to Teatro over and over again. Good for: Large Groups, so friends can choose from different cuisines.

What we found instead was a place where the sanctity of each cuisine is distinctly maintained

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts’ ‘Power Bites’ Monkeys, millipedes and little bears on the new healthy children’s menu

In the kitchens of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, strange and wonderful things are happening.

A tiny farm girl is raking spaghetti from a tube; a small bear is peeking from a mug; a mini hard-hat work-man is installing tomato into a burger and a little girl is struggling to keep the monkeys away from the cake pops.

Monkeys, workmen, farm girls and little bears? In a kitchen? Just what’s going on?

“We’re having fun launching our new children’s menu,” laughs Peter Drescher Vice President of Food & Beverage, Middle East and Asia. “These days children have constant sources of entertainment in the form of iPads, phones and games. So, we have to be equally entertaining with our food.”

But of course, like all great fun, the new children’s ‘Power Bites’ menu has a serious point. “Childhood obesity and heart disease are modern concerns so all our ingredients are low fat, use low sodium salt and lean meat. We use lots of fruit and vegetables and don’t use saturated fats.”

And the results are wonderful. Scuba toys prepare to dive into a bowl of mixed fruit; monkeys race up leaves to fresh banana smoothies; a workman examines tomato sauce for organic sausages; a mini shopping trolley car-ries rice cakes and a tomato-headed millipede crawls across a plate on cucumber feet.

The ‘Power Bites’ menu is available now at selected restaurants within Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts across the Middle East and Asia.

In addition, to celebrate the launch of the menu, a special Power Bites offer is available for families staying at the participating hotels. For further information visit www.moevenpick-hotels.com

Kundalini: A nurturing massage

The Kundalini Back Massage is based in ILA products, claiming to be beyond organic on the company’s website, with every ingredient taken from a plant or mineral – nothing chemical and no addi-tives.

After a long stressful week hunched over a desk, there is nothing more thera-peutic and revitalising than a massage, but the Kundalini Back Massage at The Ritz-Carlton Dubai International Financial Centre seemed to reach further than just relaxation. A gentle, nurturing massage that uses chakra and sound healing to activate and channel the Kundalini – the dormant energy at the base of the spine - which realigns the body’s rhythms and restores a balanced state. The 50-minute experience at The Ritz Carlton Spa incor-porates aromatic oils and warm herbal poultices, leaving a stress free mind and body, and encouraging total relaxation.

Meaning ‘earth’ in Sanskrit, ‘ila’ uses the power of nature as the source of

wellness with ingredients ‘wild harvested’ in remote regions using sustainable practices. The massage itself was gentle enough to promote snoozing, yet reached and soothed the stressed back muscles without the vigor of Thai or similar mas-sage therapies.

Convenient rather than elaborate, The Ritz-Carlton Spa at Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) boasts spacious changing rooms, two couples suites with a private whirlpool bath, eleven single treatment rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, plus separate male and female steam rooms and sauna. You should allow 15-20 minutes to unwind in the steam and sauna rooms in advance of your treat-ment, but the relaxation area post-treat-ment is more functional than encouraging you to further unwind.

The Spa also offers an extensive selec-tion of face and body treatments using Natura Bisse and the organic products from ILA, as well as a menu of express

treatments ranging from 20-40 minutes.Recommendation: A fantastic

massage for tense stressed executives, and those seeking quick “pick-me-up” treatments.

My Travel BagWhat’s in your travel bag? In this edition, Rosemin Manji, fashion guru and Dubai One TV resident fashion expert who also has a popular Studio One weekly segment, shares what she has. We’re waiting for yours. Send them to [email protected]. Throw in some photos, too.

Does traveling alone tickle your fancy? I actually don’t mind travelling alone especially in places like New York where I can walk around everywhere. I enjoy exploring lots of in-dependent boutiques.

Travelling the world on fashion trips must be exciting. Don’t you agree?Working in fashion, our trips always seem glamorous. You go places like Milan, Paris, New York or LA. But when I’m on “work mode,” I find it very hard to relax

and unwind as I know I am there to execute my given task. So I try to keep early nights to be fully alert the next day. When was the last time you travelled? In September I went to Paris with some

girlfriends.

What is your dream destination?Anywhere with crystal clear beaches and white sand.

Name three places you can’t wait to see? I would love to tour India and see the Taj Mahal; Caribbean.

Name three places you would love to return to and tell us why. Maldives, Maldives and Maldives! Its so peaceful, clear water and beautiful hotels.

Some would immediately hit the pool or the spa or the bar. Others would hit the road with their camera and digital recorders. What about you? I love sight-seeing. But most of the time, I always forget to take my camera! I do love unwinding by the beach.

What excites you when travelling? If I am visiting a new city then I would love doing all the city sight-seeing.

What motivates you to travel?I love a beautiful place with great services; shopping is always a bonus!

Any favourite Middle East destination? Beirut is fantastic for a weekend escape.

Where to next?I’d love Hong Kong, Tokyo and some other places in that part of the world.
