Treaty of Verdun

❖ The treaty of Verdun was a pact reached in the 10th of August 843 AD between the grandsons of Charlemagne: Lothair I, Louis the German and Charles the Bald.

❖ The document established the regions corresponding to each one and agreed between them mutual help.

Motivations of the Treaty of Verdun.

❖ The treaty of Verdun appears because the form to divide the empire if the emperor die didn’t like to the heirs and it caused a civil war; The way they used to end it was the treaty of Verdun, a better way to divide the empire that liked everybody, but they finished with the dream of Charlemagne of rebuild the roman empire.

❖ Charles the Bald received the Eastern France, the actual France.

❖ Lotario II received the Middle France.

❖ Louis the German received the Western France, the actual Germany.

Politic consecuences.With the time appeared different cultures between the territories, in the west they started talking languages that came from latin, and in the east, they used a language developed from barbarian languages.

There were wars between the east and west for the lands between them.

Muslims and Magiars.❖ The first great wave of Muslim invasion

❖ The Norwegian Vikings moved to Ireland and to the west of England, the Danishes, to the east of England, Friesland and the regions of the Rhine and the Swedishes went to the Baltic sea and entered the Slavonic areas of this.

❖ In the North-East of rusia they went downstream towards Novgorod and Kiev, founding ports strengthened in these territories.
