History

• Stockholm is the capital and the largest city of Sweden • The city was founded in 13th century – 1252 (first mention in Norse sagas) and is 760 years old The name of the city and its founder • ”Stock” means “log” in Swedish, possible connection to old German “stock”- “fortification”. • “holm” means islet, thought to refer to the islet Helgeandsholmen in central Stockholm. • The city was founded by Birger Jarl to protect Sweden from a sea invasion and the pillage of towns on Lake Mälaren

Geography • Central parts of the city are located on 14 islands, meeting point of Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea • 30% of the city is made up of waterways , another 30% - parks and green areas • The city of Stockholm municipality consists of 14 districts, divided in 3 major parts: Innerstaden (Stockholm City Centre), Söderort (Southern Stockholm) and Västerort (Western Stockholm).

Population and Languages • Approximately one forth of Stockholm's residents are of an immigrant or non-Swedish background (OECD, 2007) • The largest groups of foreign-born population by country include in decreasing order: Finland, Iraq, Iran, Poland, Turkey, Somalia, Chile, former Yugoslavia, Germany, Ethiopia and others • Almost 200 languages are spoken in Sweden today • Languages spoken in Stockholm: Swedish, Finnish, English, Bosnian, Syrian, Arabic, Turkish, Kurdish, Persian, Dutch, Spanish, Serbian, Croatian, Polish etc.

• Stockholm possesses abundant green areas including the world’s first legally protected national urban park and clean water safe for swimming and fishing • It is one of the cleanest capitals in the world and the first city to receive the European Green Capital award by the EU Commission in 2010 • Environmental aspects are regarded as one of the most important administrative responsibilities • Stockholm’s environmental programme concerns transport, responsible product and energy consumption, planning, waste processing and indoor environment • The City carbon dioxide emissions were cut by 25 % per capita since 1990. Attractions Among the numerous city attractions the most popular ones are:

Gamla stan

• The ”Old Town”, one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centers in Europe • Stortorget, the oldest square in Stockholm located in the middle of Gamla Stan and is the central point from which runs Köpmangatan, the oldest street in Stockholm • Among the most distinguished buildings of the district are: Riddarholmskyrkan (”Riddarholmen Church”) – burial place of the Swedish monarchs and the oldest building in the city (parts dating to the 13th century); Tyska Kyrkan (”German Church”); Riddarhuset (”Swedish House of Nobility”); Sankt Nikolai kyrkan (“Church of St. Nicholas”); Bondeska palatset (”Bonde Palace ”); Kungliga slottet (”the Royal Palace”) •The district is full of sights, museums, restaurants, cafés, bars and shops

Attractions The Royal Palace • Kungliga slottet - the official residence and major royal palace of the Swedish Monarch • The palace was largely built in 18th century in the Italian Baroque style • It is used by the King for representative purposes • The Royal Palace is open to the public, its attending usually includes visiting of The Royal Apartments, Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities, the Tre Kronor Museum and the Treasury • The Royal Palace also contains the Armory, with royal costumes and armor and coronation carriages

The Vasa Museum • Vasamuseet – the maritime museum located on the island of Djurgården • The museum displays the only preserved 17th century ship in the world. The ship sank on her first voyage in 1628 and undergone its half century restoration after being salvaged in 1961 • It is the most visited museum in Scandinavia

Skansen Open-Air Museum • Sweden’s first open-air museum and zoo located on the island Djurgården Stockholm • It was founded in 1891 to show the way of life in Sweden before the industrial era • 150 farms and dwellings from different parts of Sweden were disassembled and transported here for this purpose • The museum provides the possibility to learn about Swedish traditions (Midsummer, Walpurgis Night and Lucia are celebrated here), traditional crafts, try traditional Swedish food (the museum has several restaurants) and see the animals native to Scandinavia • Skansen is also one of the Stockolmers’ favourite passtime locations fitting for family visits

Moderna Museet • The Museum of Modern Art - is a state museum located on the island of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm. It was first opened in 1958. Its collection includes modern and contemporary art, among which are pieces by Picasso, Salvador Dalí , Henri Matisse etc. •The museum provides various exhibitions, a workshop for children, a store and an restaurant with a view of Djurgården and Strandvägen

Fotografiska • The Swedish Museum of Photography – one of the world’s largest centers of contemporary photography located in Stockholm • The museum presents 4 unique large exhibitions and about 20 smaller exhibitions every year. It also contains a book and souvenir shop, a restaurant, a photo gallery, as well as the bar on the top floor allowing visitors to enjoy the city view

The City Hall • Stadshuset - ”the City Hall”, located on Kungsholmen island, is the building of the Municipal Council for the City of Stockholm and the venue for the festivities in honor of the Nobel prize recipients • The city Hall was designed by the architect Ragnar Östberg, its construction was completed in 1923 • Stadshuset is regarded as one of Sweden's primary examples of national romanticism in architecture • It is open to the public through guided tours only, which are offered in several languages during the summer

The National Museum of Fine Arts • Nationalmuseum - is the national gallery of Sweden, located on the peninsula Blasieholmen in central Stockholm • The museum was founded in 1792 as the Royal Museum • Upon its present building opening in 1866 it was renamed the Nationalmuseum • The museums collection was largely benefited by King Gustav III and Carl Gustaf Tessin , it includes almost half a million drawings dating from the Middle Ages to 18th century, as well as modern Swedish classics of 19th and 20th centuries • In addition to Sweden’s works of art, the gallery possesses the international masterpieces by Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya, Renoir, Degas and many others

Cuisine • The diverse Stockholm has more than 1000 restaurants offering food from all over the world for both fine and fast dining • There are nine Michelin star restaurants in the city, two of which have two stars • Fish and seafood are among the most popular in Stockholm • Stockholmers like to have a coffee breaks (“fika”) in cafes of which there are many • Traditional Swedish (“husmanskost”) food can also be found in all its variety in Stockholm’s Food Halls, e.g. Östermalmshallen at Östermalmstorg or Hötorgshallen at Hötorget), which are among locals’ favourits

Transport • The Stockholm transportation system is highly developed and provides its guests and citizens with numerous options for fast, safe and sustainable travel • The Stockholm Metro; 2 urban rail systems; a suburban rail system: the Stockholm commuter rail, 3 light rail systems; a tramway; a number of bus lines, and the inner-city boat line Djurgårdsfärjan (except the airport buses and trains) are part of the city public transport system organized and operated by Stockholm County and called Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). • Bicycles are availble for rent at numerous points of Stockholm, the service is operated by the city as well as by several private companies • Taxi services are also availible and operated by private companies • Cars; driving - may be a subject to a charge depending on the time of the day, Congestion Tax) by The Swedish Transport Agency
