1. TRAPANI - the city and port

In recent years, Trapani has seen an ever-increasing growth in the luxury yachting industry, offering moorings in public piers and private marinas, bunker facilities, yacht yards and charming residences.Due to its location, the port of Trapani has always been a strategic port in the Mediterranean Sea, a central point between the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar, along the East-West routes and between Northern Africa and Europe. The main sights to see in Trapani include the historic center with its Arab style narrow cobbled streets which were originally surrounded by the city wall, the numerous churches, especially the Cathedral, the “Collegio dei Gesuiti”, the “Chiesa del Purgatorio” and the “Santuario della Madonna”, the fish market square where you can enjoy the daily spectacle of the sale of fish products within a colorful and picturesque context, the defensive bastion of “Torre Ligny”, the “Colombaia” castle and, last but not least, the salt pans. The whole area of Trapani is an amazing mixture of history, architecture and gastronomic delights. The crystal-clear sea has sculpted a coastline of stunning variety and beauty. Exploring Trapani both by sea and land will reward you with an intense and unforgettable experience.

2. Nature Reserve of the Salt Pans in Trapani

The salt pan reserve is characterized by lagoons and marshes with shallow water. The primary activity in the lagoons was, and still is today, the production of salt. The salt farming method is fairly simple and consists of channeling sea water into small pools, allowing the water to evaporate under the warm sun and then collecting the salt that is left behind. The salt is then left to dry in picturesque white piles, covered with terracotta tiles. In past times, the water was pumped by windmills, some of which have been beautifully restored and remain visible today. The main attractions of the reserve are the picturesque windmills and the numerous migratory birds such as herons and beautiful pink flamingos which stop here en-route to Africa.

3. The historic town of ERICE

Erice is the picturesque, medieval town on top of the rocky mountain of San Giuliano, overlooking the city of Trapani. The foundation of Erice was associated with the Greek hero Eryx, from which it gets its name and the goddess Venus Ericina. The thick walls that protect the town were built in ancient times, at different stages, by the Elymians and Phoenicians. There are two castles that remain standing in the town, the Pepoli Castle, which dates from Saracen times, and the Venus Castle, dating from the Norman period, built on top of the ancient Temple of Venus, where Venus Ericina was worshipped. You can take lovely walks in the quaint medieval streets and alleys lined with sturdy, ancient and very picturesque stone houses.Other main sights in Erice are the 14th century Cathedral and the many churches. In Erice you will find pastry shops where you can try the delicious, well known almond cakes.

4. Marine Protected Area of the EGADI ISLANDS The Marine protected area of the Egadi Islands is the largest of its kind in the Mediterranean Sea.Facing the city of Trapani and the western Sicilian coast, it comprises the islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo and the islets Formica, Maraone and Porcelli. The main attractions include the wild coastlines and the wonderful underwater landscapes, with plentiful flora, fauna, and archaeological finds.Posidonia seagrass extends over much of the reserve’s seabed and numerous rare and protected fauna species live here, including the Striped and Bottle-nosed Dolphins, the Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta) and the Monk Seal.

5. Archeological Sites of the EGADI ISLANDS

The Egadi Islands were the scene of the First Punic War in the 3rd Century BC which brought hundreds of ships and thousands of men together in a battle that helped shape the course of history.Evidence of Rome’s decisive victory over Carthage has been discovered over the years in the waters of the Egadi Islands. Numerous warship rams, armors and helmets, amphorae and shipboard items have been found lying on the seabed around the Egadi Islands. The island of Levanzo is of particular interest for its “Grotta del Genovese” cave where you can see Neolithic paintings and Paleolithic graffiti.

6. MARSALA historic town

Marsala is built on the ruins of the ancient Carthaginian city Lilibeo, and encompasses the famous archaeological site of Mozia and the Nature Reserve of the Stagnone lagoon. The city is famous for the landing of Garibaldi with his “Expedition of the Thousand” in 1860. This was an important event of the Italian Risorgimento, the political and social movement that brought together the different states of the Italian peninsula, forming the united Kingdom of Italy in 1861.The main sights in Marsala include the Dome dedicated to Saint Thomas of Canterbury with its organ with 4,317 pipes; the numerous churches and, for wine-lovers, the many winemaking establishments including Ingham-Whitaker, Cantine Florio, Pellegrino and Donnafugata.Marsala is also well known for its dessert wine, also named Marsala. Large-scale wine production began at the end of the 18th Century and still continues today. It is worth remembering, though, that the Marsala wine cellars are famous not only for their production of dessert wine, but also for their excellent red and white wines that are produced with local grapes.

7. MOZIA and the Stagnone lagoon At the end of the 19th Century, the English nobleman Joseoh Isaac Spatafora Whitaker discovered the ruins of the ancient Phoenician colony of Mozia. The tiny island of Mozia was chosen by the Phoenicians because of its location offering a suitable site for a vital and later prosperous colony. The fact that the island was surrounded by the shallow waters of the Stagnone Lagoon and naturally protected by the Isola Longa islet on the seaward side, meant that Mozia was coveted as a strategic location by both the Carthaginians and the Syracusans. In the end, this was to be its undoing, as, besieged by the Syracusan forces, Mozia was completely destroyed. The main sights to see in Mozia include the ancient wind mills and the salt pans and the lovely house built by the Whitakers, now used as a museum.

8. SEGESTA archeological site Segesta was one of the major cities of the Elymians in Sicily. The city was in eternal conflict with the city of Selinunte, which was probably trying to gain a port on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Segesta was an ally of Carthage, it was besieged by Dionysius of Syracuse in 397 BC, and it was destroyed by Agathocles in 307 BC, although it eventually recovered. In 276 BC Segesta was allied with Pyrrhus, but it changed sides in 260 BC when it surrendered to the Romans. The city was eventually destroyed by the Vandals. The Main attractions of Segesta include the well preserved Doric temple and the Greek theatre in the archeological park nearby. The setting of the Temple, perched upon a hill is simply beautiful - in the background you can admire the completely unspoilt rolling green countryside and views that stretch right down to the sea.On top of a nearby hill, sitting at 400m above sea level is the semicircular theatre. The wonderful views from the theatre made stage scenery unnecessary as the surrounding countryside provided a natural backdrop to the action taking place on stage. Today, during the summer months, the theatre is used as a venue for Greek plays, concerts and other events.

9. The Zingaro Nature Reserve The Zingaro Nature Reserve stretches for over 10 kilometers along the coast between Scopello and San Vito lo Capo. Numerous endemic plants can be found in the reserve, some of which are extremely rare, such as the Chamaerops Humilis, a dwarf palm which has become the symbol of the reserve.Thirty-nine different bird species nest here, including ten pairs of Peregrine Falcon.Various trekking trails run through the reserve; the most popular is the trail which runs the entire length of the reserve along the spectacular coast.

Trekking trialsin the Zingaro Nature Reserve and in the island of Marettimo

Both the Zingaro Nature Reserve and the Island of Marettimo are home to towering limestone mountains, dotted with spectacular caves and petrified forests, and to a beautiful coast characterized by impressive coves and cliffs. There is the opportunity for refreshing dips in the various coves.
