General Information

Traditionally, information regarding passenger demand has been collected through manual procedures which only provides information relating to specific time periods. This means that Public Transport services are being planned according to the information collected during these specific periods, while actual demand is in fact much more varied. Therefore, on some occasions the Public Transport service exceeds demand, and, environmental and economic costs increase, and at other times it does not meet the demand, resulting in a poor service.The solution developed by Counterest, hereinafter Passenger Analytics, is based on a software that goes beyond the state of the art, and runs on off-the shelf 3D cameras and Wi-Fi antennas that are installed on-board and collects data about passengers’ movements. The solution is also enriched with external sources, like weather forecasts or ticketing, in order to build up data models for deriving intelligent insights for allowing Public Transport Operators and Authorities to understand real passengers’ behavior, such as the origin and destination of their journeys or possible variations depending on events in the city, traffic jams, weather or incidents. Counterest provides a full-service, going from the on-board installation of all devices to the data delivery which is provided through an online dashboard which is accessible as a Software As A Service. Now, Passenger Analytics has already been proven in operational environment thanks to the collaboration with key Public Transport companies such as TMB or AMB. So far, the results obtained of both passenger counting and O-D matrix show a high correlation with the manual audits.

Counterest has estimated that the solution will earn a return of €9,3 million in revenues within 4 years and employ 25 people.
