Transport: Part 1Passive Transport
Gradient
Gradient: any imbalance in
concentration. Moving down a
gradient means that the particle
is trying to be evenly distributed
everywhere, like dropping food
coloring in water.
Passive
Transport
Passive
Transport
NEVER
requires:
There are three types of
passive transport…
• Simple
Diffusion
• Facilitated
Diffusion
• Osmosis
Simple Diffusion
Simple diffusion is molecules moving
down a gradient through a membrane.
Molecules that do this must be small
Facilitated Diffusion
Uses glycoproteins in the cell membrane
to HELP molecules pass into and out of
the cell.
Osmosis
The simple diffusion of
water from a high
concentration to a
low concentration.
